Using the Atomos Ninja Star with the Sony HVR-Z5E. Don't make the mistake I made!!

  • In this video, I discuss the reason behind my purchase of the Atomos Ninja Star (ANS) and how I totally misunderstood the purpose of this product.
The ANS allows users to effectively capture the raw data from their cameras, allowing the user to get the maximum output from their camera via HDMI.
Dependent on your camera, it will wither output in 8 or 10 bit (maybe higher) and allow you to record in either 4:2:2 or 4:4:4.
For more information, please look at my fellow RUclipsrs who do a much better job.

It's great to see someone working the Z5 today! I stumbled upon it as I'm a former film student on a budget working in the AV industry. I saw an ad for a used Z5U, went to see some test footage, and my jaw completely dropped! A 20x G lens with this quality for 1000 bucks CAD?! And it doesn't take any space on the cards. Nowadays it's very easy to upscale footage with great success using tools like Red Giant, professional broadcast hardware if you have access to it, or even free tools lie VN editor on Mac yielded very successful results for me.
I used to push a P2 camera to it's most possible cinematic capacity, so when I see what the Z5U is capable of, with the price, handling, and zoom - no other camera on the markets seems this convenient for me. Doesn't have the highest dynamic range, but the lens sharpness, and that roll-off in the highlights - back when digital sensors had flair and style like a film stock!

4:2:2 is still pretty good, especially for a DV/HDV camera! If you ever get your hands on a DV/HDV camera that has SDI/HDSDI then you could bypass the 8bit 4:2:0 completely and possibly get the 10bit 4:2:2 you were after

    • @BenJonesVideographer

Also the fact it records ProRes 422 means the video will have so little compression compared to standard HDV (which I believe is only 29mbps) so really it might even be better than an MRC1

@@BenJonesVideographer Thanks for your comments, really helpful.
Yes, I totally agree with you. Effectively, I could remove the MRC1 and maybe use that on older legacy Sony camcorders as a cheap way to archive, as long as I can procure a dock.
And yes, the fact that I can capture pro res 422 with the ninja star in conjunction with the camera is pretty cool. The MRC1 doesn't afford me that luxury.
It always surprises me how capable some of the older cameras still are. You could easily shoot a short film with a few of these cameras.

@@ReelFilm2016 I believe Canon XL-H1 had the SDI output, as does the XH-G1. The former is the HD version if the famous XL1/XL2 range of camera that were used for just about everything back on the day - 28 Days Later most famously. It has detachable lenses and can be used with EF lenses if you have the converter. I managed to get one off eBay for about £50, but that was without a lens and the tape mechanism is a little ropey so I'd need a tapeless solution. But given they often go for around £1000 I still consider it a bargain.
When you say you wanted to increase the resolution do you mean from 1440x1080 to 1920x1080? I'm surprised the HDMI out doesn't offer that as presumably that's what the sensor is capturing.

@@asprinwizard Hello Richard, thanks for your response.
Yes, I remember reading about how the Canon camera was used in 28 days later. Love that film.
In regards to your question regarding my hope of a bump in resolution, (1440x1080 to 1920x1080), the answer is, I have no idea what I was expecting :-).
One thing I did find whilst I was doing my comparison video of the Z5E / A1E, was that when I captured footage directly from the tape, it was coming out as 1440x1080, but when I captured from the MRC1, it was 1920X1080.
When I purchased the Atomos Ninja Star, I think my hope was that it would allow me to capture my video in like 50p, but clearly I didn't understand what I was doing.
However, I can whole heartedly recommend buying something you have no understanding of, learning it's not what you thought and then realising that in actual fact, you have not only learnt something new, but it offers you something you didn't expect.

@@ReelFilm2016 what is the resolution of the video captured from the Ninja Star? It should be 1920x1080 since it will capture whatever comes out of the HDMI. In the case of that camera the output would be 50i, so that's what it will capture. TBH I don't think the Ninja Star will capture 50p at 1080p anyway, certainly my Atomos won't - the more modern 4k Atomos's will I believe but as I say it's determined by the HDMI output of the camera. You could upscale the 50i output to be 50p. I believe there are devices that will do that, but that's another thing to mount on your camera. Perhaps a better option is to upscale the clips using a decent advanced deinterlacer on the computer. I tend to do this with my HDV stuff and I have found the results to be very good indeed - although I'm no really expert.

Slight correction: 4:2:2 & 4:2:0 are called "chroma subsampling", not color space. Color space describes things like "RGB" "YCbCr" or "YPbPr".

The thing I have not got around to sorting yet is that I can only get it to record 4 : 3 to the MRC at present ,must be a setting on the Z1 that's not right, but thanks, really enjoy your vids. 😁

@@ReelFilm2016 Hi ,just an update on my progress with the Z1E and MRC1,I got it it to display video 16:9 by using Windows HD Movie Maker instead of Windows Photos.I can now control start/stop from the record button of the camera, but it is neccessary to have the tape running also,as I said previously ,it's possible to record without the tape by using the record buttons on the MRC.
Altogether,it's a useful little unit, but it does weigh down the front of the camera if it is mounted on the front cold shoe, maybe a smaller battery would help, apparently the batteries last many hours on the MRC so does not really need a big battery. The alternative is to use a longish cable and put it in your pocket,or on your belt.

4:2:2 does not capture more color - It gives you more samples of the same color, and only matters if you process the video more than once, like color correction for example. All the good video editing suites these days allow for No Re encoding of the video and only encode the changes you made. So it depends on what you are doing.
