This is gonna change Nano’s place in the game. Their greatest showing yet and it justifies it’s price, despite being way outside of the usual range of their products.
I hope it does really well for them. They've been making consistently solid modules that sound good and work well. It's been a pleasure to be part of that from the first module (MAR) working with them for videos.
Mixing is kinda key to getting Eurorack to be more “musical”… to me. Editing when sounds show up and managing FX can really create a great listening experience! This mixer seems quite handy!
This is brilliant. Just what the doctor ordered. The expander is great as well. Still in the market for a performance mixer and waiting patiently for the right one. It does make it a bit less fun to set up, but super fun to perform with for sure. I love it. Thanks for sharing Ben
Not sure if I missed it, but would be cool if the motion recording was syncable to a clock, if wanted...also to be able to use the motion recording as a cv out to control other modules. but still a great mixer with tons of features!!!
Hello, there's no clocking for the motion recording or an output. The idea is to add some human free running motion and to use the CV inputs if you want clocked / looped external sources (envelopes, sequences, LFOs etc).
oh I totally agree it would be a cool option. I think like anything if these ideas are supported and do well they're far more likely to be expanded on in the future.
Super interesting module and really more than just a mixer with the recorders. Excellent video as always on features and potential for modules, the best in my opinion! You deserve more subs & views!
So I guess we have to be OK creating rhythmic changes with the mutes? Not the same as being able to trigger/gate that RECord button though is it..? Or I suppose I could just learn to 'Play in time?' Or perform strictly at 80bpm (4 bars), 160bpm (8 bars) or a wonky 120bpm with 6 bar looping and hold that REC till it bottoms out! Honestly, some people are never satisfied. Definitely a winner from NANO, good work guys. Another killer vid as always DivKid. Boss!
Thanks, appreciate it. I don't have any workshops on mixing and composition specifically, but I've spent a long time doing both prior to modular videos so that helps. I've done one to one sessions, which is something I'm considering opening up again.
@@DivKid I def would do sessions with you. I dont think its hard to create a melody or harmony or beat, whats hard is putting layers together and achieving some kind of cohesion, improvised or planned. I'm trying to get to a level where I could create music like Jon Hopkins, infuse some depth and emotion and a little more future garage broken beat.
Cool! I've been used to this sort of control on the Novation Tracks and Korg Volcas but not seen in Eurorack before. Would love to get my hands on one.
Be great to see a module like this for general outgoing voltages, like a macro-control center with recordable loopable voltage per channel out. Add some randomization in there and it’d be a no brainer.
Wow. This is powerful, I do wonder about build quality and sound quality--it's maybe unfair, but as far as I can tell, the creators of this company are quite young (I think on their website they said they started to build some eurorack as part of a university thesis project or something), and it's a bit off that there seems to be no real official in depth manuals or documentation, and some of these mini pots and mini buttons seem like they could break or malfunction quite easily, not to mention the internal digital stuff that needs to make the auto rec work properly. So, pretty much the opposite side of the spectrum of a grizzled middle aged German or Eastern European engineer that has been refining circuits for the past 20 years to get the best possible specifications, no extra bells and whistles, just analogue perfection :) I would put Aleksei L-1 and his mixers (and other modules) more in this category.
Considering they use many of the same parts as lots of other people I do think that's a bit unfair. Also their age is somewhat irrelevant, they'll have as much experience as many other module designers. As not all grizzly German or Eastern European (or anywhere else) based engineers have say 20 years of engineering experience because they're say 40 years old. A lot of Eurorack is made by "non engineers", who have learnt on the job based on say a musical background rather than an engineering one and many those people are doing amazing things. Of course some are "qualified" through early education and many years of engineering work in other areas. But if they're using the same circuits and parts you're not going to get lots of variance from one maker to another. I understand the comparisons though, someone like Aleksei compared to NANO Modules those companies feel very different (as people or a company etc) and their lives no doubt have been very different. But they're also doing very different things which aren't that comparable anyway. But considering I've used _A LOT_ of Eurorack for over 10 years now and I don't have things breaking I don't think we need to worry about anything.
@@DivKid Well said then. You're right, a lot of people and parts are similar--actually, that's why I've tended to avoid most of them in favor of companies more like L-1 and AJH where I know there is significant quality control, experience, and engineering know how (I'd add ACL to that list, but they're defunct). Other people have long pointed out on modwiggler, that compared to many instruments, professional electronics etc. there is a disturbing lack of uniform standards in the eurorack space. I've been in It for 8 years and I've had a few things break. I do wonder, especially with all the super small digital modules and functionally, in ANOTHER 10 years, how many of these modules will be working 100% and how many of these companies will still exist (and many have gone bankrupt)--I do think that should give someone pause about dropping hundreds of dollars on a single module, especially when developers in some cases seem like "we're just trying this out!" (among many companies) and they can't even be bothered to write a proper manual. Thinking long term as a musician and where to spend those bucks as most people in the world get poorer, my tendency has definitely shifted from "ooh cool shiny buy!" to more like "How carefully was it designed and built? How serious do the people seem behind it? How likely are these companies, people, SUPPORT to be around in 10 or 30 years?" etc.. It is quite a weird dynamic still, compared to buying from more established companies. Ah, and speaking of such, I see a great deal on an ADDAC 702, I was trying to find out more, but like a lot of ADDAC, I see almost no chatter about it for years..I found a comment from you through saying the excessive resonance etc. and trimmer functionality killed it for you though :P ADDAC is a good example of what I'm talking about though..established company, even, lots of modules though that it seems very few people own, multiple reports of some things not working right, and of little support or documentation about some things judging from people on the forums.etc...and I'm saying this as someone who owned and loved multiple of their modules as some of my first euro modules. And they're far from the worst offenders.
Plenty to chat about ... but as I saw this as I'm about to go offline for now I'll just say ... I've never tried an ADDAC 702, or (I think) commented about it as I haven't tried one. So I'm not sure that was me. I had to look that module up (dual MS-20 style filter I see).
It would be cool if the AUX send and returns had the option to be either eurorack level or attenuate output and amplify input for sth. like guitar pedals.
Hi Divkid, thank you so much for the video! I've bought one and am very happy with the cue functionally and the motion control but I'm having a hard time getting the send and returns properly working. They do seem to work but the effect volume is extremely low in volume, barely audible. Is this a common problem in modular mixing? My only reference with send and returns is Ableton where it's very easy to set up. Couldn't find an answer to my problem while going through the usual fora so I thought to ask you.
Hello, that's not normal. Can you breakdown your patching and let me know what's happening. If you're using the send output to anything outside of modular (pedals, rack gear, in and out of software) it will be low level. If it's going to Eurorack FX modules then turning up the X/Y return levels it should be able to be as loud as the tracks themselves. One thing to note is that send FX should be 100% wet, as your dry sound is present on the track themselves. Any phase difference (on the dry sound) can cause volume loss.
@@DivKid thank you for your quick reply. I'm using the send outputs to FX Aid Pro and Dual Dagger filter. Both X and Y all the way open do not give the expected result. I will ask Nano Modules, just wanted to make sure that I did no make a newbie error before bothering them.
Newbie or long term user mistakes often creep in for all of us, so it's good to step back and check things. I don't have an FX Aid Pro but I have an FX Aid. Too much level and it can clip in a not nice way, but I've never had it be quiet. You should be able to pick a delay or reverb on that, take the mix 100% wet and bring it back into the X or Y input and with the X/Y level controls you should have plenty of Eurorack level (i.e. not quiet) control. Can the FX Aid Pro be set to output line level or something? I've no idea, don't think it can but trying to find the error point here. Presuming there's not too much filter on the dual dagger (i.e. high and low pass filters not so close it's just a small quiet band of frequencies passing) that should output totally fine too. Are both the FX Aid Pro and Dual Dagger fine as inserts? Which just means taking your fine directly through them? Give that a go, sound into ch.1 on the mixer, try the send and return. Then try sound into those modules first, then into ch.1. Is it only quiet in the send/return configuration?
Really appreciate your effort to help me out. Both filter and FX audio Pro are working fine when I use them with the master output from the PM mixer to the input of the filter, filter to input FX Aid Pro, FX Aid Pro to my Audio Interface. Which is the setting that I used with my previous small Doepfer mixer> But when I connect it like this: PM master output to Audio Interface. (works fine) Send X to FX Aid Pro input (L) / Output from FX Aid Pro to Input Return PM. Nothing. In all channels, pre and post fader and everything wide open. Panning is also not working I just found out. :-( @@DivKid
Hello both, no clocking for the loops. What does work well is to use something like a Batumi or Pamela's Workout for clocked modulation if that's what you want. The idea here was for it to be free running, live, human etc. I appreciate this is the obvious thing, I brought it up with NANO when I saw the module, but I certainly appreciate free running modulation (cough cough ochd), especially when used against tempo/clocked sources (CV over everything helps with that).
Hey@@DivKid, Thanks for taking the time :) Like you say, plenty of sets it's still a super useful feature for. Maybe we can hope for another version or an expander. IMO there's a lack of good mixers for a 2 voice case with FX. 2 channel mix with individual 2x send, cue, and clocked recording would be a dream for me, never really use pan that much. (Club systems often mono experience anyway)
Yeah I think with most things if they're successful and supported we'll see things added to and built upon in the future. I hope that's the case as I'd love to see more. I think most people that want more comprehensive mix features tend to want more than 2 channels which is why we never see them. Sounds a bit self-promoting but I use my own Stereo strip module as a sort of mix channel for shaping things and controlling them at the end of the voice chain a lot. It takes multiple modules but that's a really nice way to work.
No it doesn't, but I don't think it's weird at all. It's a basic technical feature set that leads to powerful results. Add some human, free running movement and get things moving. I think that's fantastic. There's CV over everything for stored sequences, clock synced LFOs etc. CV also mixes with recorded motion if you want to layer both. Not everything needs to be tempo synced. Would I like a clocked voltage storage looping system ... absolutely! But I've had good results from this and appreciate the simple design.
