that was sokkas character arc, the show portrayed sokkas sexism as a negative thing and it fits his character, its caused by him being the only male left in his village, and he has to live up to those expectations and be a man you know. he grows out of that in like the first few episodes. thats the point that its bad. edit: oh you just said that I hadnt watched it

I'm suddenly very worried that Netflix might change the story and have Zuko join the team avatar at Ba Sing Se! If they think certain parts of the show are 'iffy', what if Zuko's decision is 'Iffy' to them!? THEY BETTER NOT RUIN ZUKO'S REDEMPTION ARK!!!
oooh, haven't you heard, they apparently give the burning of kyoshi island to general zhao when in original it was zuko who did that. but ya know, him being a villain and doing evil deeds is a tad too iffy!
coming up on my 10th annual atla rewatch. as a woman, you're entirely right. my theory is that netflix is scared of potential "controversies" or lack of viewership due to that 4 minutes of sokka's slightly sexist dialogue. however, if theyre staying true to the story, atla's massive fanbase wouldn't give 2 shits and would watch regardless because ITS IN THE ORIGINAL SERIES. thank you for coming to my ted talk.
I feel like netflix is gonna be outright flipping every character on their head; the next "logical" (by their terms)step is to flip the roles of Aang and Katara, making him a side character and her the typical "strong woman", next theyll strip toph of all her blind jokes because they're "offensive" then take away her conversation with Iroh (he's next) and make her just a hotheaded loner. zuko will be made into even more of a bad guy (because feminism) and iroh will be a joke, because they dont wanna hear his wisdom.
Did they miss the part where katara literally calls him sexist. Sucks the are undermining his character growth cause his actor sounds just like his voice actor
How would they? They ran the creators off, and Netflix showrunners NEVER research the source material, because they believe it's their right to retcon it. Did we learn nothing from Henry Cavil or Jenna Ortega, or even Oda?
@@EmpyricReporter sorry to tell you kid, cartoons aren’t real life, historically it’s just a fact men went to war, not women accept for very rare cases
Sokka’s “sexism was just part of his character he was the only guy in the village so naturally he felt he had a “man’s responsibility” which I’m pretty sure is what the writers were going for.
I was looking forward to this show because the creators were a part of it. Now, well, it looks like it isn't going to be worth my time. Congratulations Netflix for screwing it up worse than M Night Shyamalan. I didn't know it was possible, but you found a way.
So, basically, let’s say a villain is a douchebag. Writers write out his evilness because being evil is bad. Why is there a villain in the first place????
@Fatih_M177 I mean if you actually watched avatar then youd know they portray humans, and humainty. People arent evil, or black and white and thats a part of the fucking series.
@@miiko7859 I think you don't understand my comment. Read it again. I'm saying the original show was fantastic. The new show will suck. Live action adaptations suck and should not be made. The original is perfect and the new version will not surpass it in quality so what's the point?
I'm glad I grew up during the early 2000s back when producers weren't afraid to get real and take risks instead of the pussies we have for writers these days.
@@assassinunknown6664 lol it hasn’t come out yet and your just assuming. Also Sokkas sexism is only in three episodes it isn’t his main character arc it isn’t even that important. Does it have a important lesson and it is weird that they would change that and I disagree with their choice. Yes. Does it effect the show greatly or take away crucial points to the character or show and wrecks the show. No.
Often when people remake a well loved show they make the mistake of wanting to show the characters as how we saw them in the end without letting the audience learn how they got there.
Yup heard about this on Tiktok...no wonder the original creators left the project half way through. This is doomed. They fail to realize thats the entire reason for Sokka's character growth.
@thesenate9939 several times. I love it. But I also want the live action to deviate a bit. Otherwise I'd rather just watch the animated show. If they remove all sexism from sokka (i.e. men should be warriors only), I'd say its a valid complaint. But they're not. They're trying to just make him a little more likeable, which is harder in live action than animated. I think this is what people are missing. The only thing I'm concerned with is suki... his sexist attitude was a perfect transition for this. But I think they will still include that only men should be warriors. So it should still work. I just dont think live action needs to be exactly the same. Also, it's just so disrespectful to all the actors and everyone who worked hard on this to decide not to watch it or review bomb it just because if this one little change that people are blowing out of proportion just because of their personal views.
@@YoBrand15it’s more like a protest on sugar coated and “everything is offensive” storytelling directors. Adults get censorship because these days their less mature than a child. I honestly don’t even know how adults have the right to consent either at this point.
"You're remaking one of the most beloved shows of all time, why would you change it?" Because these sorts of people think they can do better than the original creators. They enjoy hijacking other people's works so that they can 'fix' or 'improve' them while also destroying/missing the original intent entirely. These people suck.
Whoever said the original show is sexist obviously never watched it. Sokka learns throughout the show that women are just as capable as him. He even gets humbled by many women who have better skills. Which is the show's way of blatantly handfisting the message that being sexist isnt cool.
@@ShinyShiny_what do you not get about it being for characters development? It help sokka grow and become a better person in the show and shows how cool the girls in the arc were. Why change something that was fine in the first place nobody said anything about him being sexist except his sister and that helps him understand that it wasn't cool.
@@ShinyShiny_ I suggest that you use your brain for once in you life. Adding those parts teach children that being sexust is not ok. The whole show is about teaching kid how to be better and by kids see a character that they like that was sexist change their ways will again show kids being sexist is not cool. If you would actually think with your head maybe you would get that.
Omg, I forgot about the Northern Tribe's sexist views on teaching women waterbending for combat. If they took out Sokka's sexist views that were only there for like the first 4 episodes before he learns from the Kiyoshi Warriors, they probably took out the North's sexism too, which takes away from Katara's character arc and overcoming that struggle through sheer will and determination for change and even Princess Yue's struggle of her duty as princess vs her true desire to be with Sokka. At this point leave Avatar alone. The movie, the recent game, and now seemingly this show are tarnishing the legacy.
The whole anti-sexism message of the kioshi story arch falls apart if they take away Sokka's character development. By making him not say those things they will actually make the etire message more sexist. How can people be this stupid? They literally cancelled self-improvement.
I do wonder how Katara and Sokka will trigger The Boy in the Iceberg scene in the adaptation. The scene got triggered over Katara going scorched earth at Sokka for his sexist remark towards her after their canoe broke leaving them stranded. Will the iceberg just rise to sea level like “it was meant to be”? That would be lame.
My favorite part of sokka and suki is when they say: Sokka:I treated you as a girl when I should’ve treated you a a warrior Suki:I am a warrior but I’m also a girl
the worst part for me its the tweet itself they made it to boast they legit ghought: ''hey this is gonna be so good publicity for the show! we removed sexism! fuck yeah!'' its so dumb they believed this would be a good idea
they are going to really fuck this up. katara learnt water bending by proving to her master that even though she's a girl she is a great water bender she stood up to sexism and proved him wrong... which is the best message you can give to kids or people. 100% they are going to fuck this up and im really sad about it, I love avatar lol... Hope it turns out to be Awesome!
I just don't get it! Why take out the tiny bit of "sexism" that Sokka has (and even ends up learning it's wrong) but they want to show us the brutal genocide of the airbenders?!? It's seriously so so stupid!
Taking this away also takes away the lesson of how these ideas develop and where they come from. You can't change world views if you don't understand where they come from. Sokka's arc is so masterfully done, it has a logical origin, his flaws chime in only when it's appropriate, and he grows past them in a realistic way. On top of that, this sexism arc ties into his growth as a leader as a good leader is able to place themselves into the position of his followers and knows how to admit when they're wrong. The scene where he bows to Tsuki is the first scene where we really get to see that growth on full display. There is an argument for the air temple coming first with the empathy thing but the scene they're likely scrubbing is the first where both are in full swing. What a god damn disappointment...
sokka is an amazingly well written character, yes he's sexist in the early 2000's kinda way where he underestimates women's capabilities, but he learns humility as a result. this sokka is going to be a joke, worse than the fire nation's propaganda.
This worries me too. If they get rid of this, they'll might remove how the North Water Tribe operates (with gender roles) and how the waterbending teacher refused to teach Katara and even stopped teaching Aang for teaching her.
Important reminder that it is not the fault of the child actors if Avatars turn out bad! Let's not bully children, people! (I've been in fandom long enough to know that this is possible. )
I genuinely can't decide whether to laugh or sulk at how correct you are. Online fandoms will genuinely bully children because some woke director made a bad decision.

character development in tv shows makes the show and its characters more relatable and the show more enjoyable. A lot of kids tv shows nowadays don’t add this kind of element in their shows and it pisses me off
Even if Sokka was a sexist, it would make sense given the time period they are in. The guy grew up in a tribe where all the men went off to war and left the women behind, so it makes sense he wouldn't view women as combatants
The crazy thing is in that culture that’s the gender roles! The women do the chores and the men go out hunting and fighting! The men are missing because they went fighting in the show 🤯

Look, I don't agree with the Netflix change to remove or reduce Sokka's sexism, as it plays a vital role in his development. But claiming that Netflix is ruining everything, or even the show, because of a small change like this, is ridiculous.
Ive always seen avatars throughline is about change. Every character has a defining flaw that drags them down on different levels. Like katara's inability to forgive or move on or toph thinking she can do anything. If theyre getting rid of these flaws, they might as well remove iroh from zuko
If 8 year old me could understand Sokka's character and why he was "sexist" I'm scared to think how much dumb and sensetive creators think 16-20+ yo are
I agree with almost every take expect the one about the Airbender Genocide, i'm pumped for an actual scene finally of that fight. Sozin leading the way against Gyatso, i'm glad it's starting this way given how important the event was in the timeline but never shown other than a quick glimpse of burning temples for an event so important in the timeline and being mentioned so many times throughout the original show.
Literally the only change I can think of that has any potential to improve the show is to change the Deus ex ending. Because the turtle giving aang spirit bending was the only really dumb choice IMO
I hate that we live in a world where people aren't supposed to feel uncomfortable anymore, or not have their beliefs challenged. Every character we see nowadays, whether its in movies, comics, shows or games has to be perfect from the get go. They need to have things figured out from the start because god forbid if they show some real humanity by having their beliefs challenged and changed as part of their character. We are they way we are partly due to the environment we grow up in and the things we experience. Sokka was left in charge of his whole village, and he felt that meant he needed to be the manliest man he could be. And how could he not? He was a young boy that experienced all the men leaving for battle. He then started traveling the world and saw his beliefs challenged. Which makes him, and his journey, you know... INTERESTING. The Kyoshi warriors episode was so interesting because we saw this happen. We saw how Sokka was forced to change his beliefs because he experienced something that was out of line of his own preconceived notion of the world. One of my favourite lines in that episode was when Sokka and Suki said goodbye and Suki told Sokka "I am a warrior, but I'm also a girl". Before giving him smooch. It taught Sokka that things aren't always as clear cut and easily defined as they might seem to be. That girls can be badass AND feminine. Again INTERESTING characters dealing with UNCOMFORTABLE situations making their story more INTERESTING. THAT'S LITERALLY ALL WE'RE ASKING NETFLIX. MAKE, SHIT, INTERESTING.
IF YOU CANT HAVE ANY MAIN CHARACTERS HAVE FLAWS IN SCENE ONE, HOW IS THERE ANY ROOM FOR THEM TO GROW GOING FORWARD. THERE IS NO WARRIORS JOURNEY IF THE MC IS ALREADY PERFECT
They aren’t changing the original show?!?! Just don’t watch the new one and there is nothing to be upset abt. Netflix comfirmed that Sokkas sexism isn’t being removed just changed after everyone had a fit when they literally said “toned down”
THEY TOOK FIVE STEPS FORWARD; AND A LEAP BACKWARDS WITH THIS ONE. Part of Sokka’s character development is to look down on what he doesn’t understand, to acceptance and change. This goes beyond his sexist mentality. He went from calling Katara’s bending “magic water” to not only relying on it for his plans, but feeling inferior to it, which led him to training in swordsmanship. His scientist mindset caused him to look down on a village that relied on fortunetelling to; him giving up and excepting that he can’t change the minds of their personal beliefs. And back to being a sexist… Sokka is the epitome of what people call toxic masculinity these days. It comes from being left behind (due to not being a man) by the warriors and father. Also having the responsibility of being the only warrior in his tribe. He was not only humbled by Suki in sparing; but humbled enough to ask her to train under her (learning a traditional female driven martial arts). He also acknowledged that his ways were wrong, and that his perceptions had changed. I am so sick and tired of this woke BS. The people that they are trying to please are the minority. They dont even care anymore. I can’t even purchase a cup of coffee without it being an ethical decision.
@@YoBrand15 I disagree. A lot of us have been waiting for this for over a decade, and they’re altering a character that we love for the sake of being woke. It looks like a good show, so I will happily watch it. But overall, it’s a little disappointing.
@evanalmighty5554 I just can't stand how much people throw the word woke around. There is plenty of wokeness to criticize. I 100% agree with that. But this isn't one of them. I respect your opinion but it makes me cringe. The way I see it is this was a very small part of sokka, and something I didn't like about the original. It seems like they are toning it down, not removing it. So I think he will still have the view that only men will be warriors. But in the animated series he was over the top woth it. Even in the water tribe women are respected as healers. But sokka had some lines that were just overall pessimistic about women in general, not just as a warrior. I think this is what they are removing. Things play out differently in live action. You can't make the character as animated and quirky and funny in a live action. So if they keep everything it will just make him look like a dick, and they won't have as much time to get him about of it and develop all parts of his character. I just think people need to stop hoping a live action is IDENTICAL to the original. Why should we want that? I'd rather just watch the original if that's the case. We should embrace some amount of change. The only issue I see about this change is how he meets and bonds with suki. His sexism was a perfect transition to that. I think they will keep just enough of it to get around this though.
@@YoBrand15 I understand where you’re coming from. I don’t expect a live action to be 100% or as animated as a cartoon/anime. I always embrace changes in certain areas. Hell, I’m one of the few who actually enjoyed cowboy bebop (despite certain things in the show😂). I agree with you was a small part of his character in the beginning of the show, but it plays a big role in the bigger picture of his character. Sorry, I made you cringe with the word woke. What is the best way to summarize actions like this. The last several years as a consumer it feels like it’s being spoonfed to me at this point. Kind of like my mom sneaking vegetables on my plate. I’ll definitely consider your point of toning down rather than washing away.
@evanalmighty5554 so I think the word woke is generally fine. Because there is a lot in the world I feel that are being forced on us to believe (some or which I agree with, some or which i don't. But everyone should be able to choose what they believe). I just think it gets thrown around too much. I don't see this change as a way to soften kids from seeing sexism (you can see it in the animated already, which is more accessible for kids because its animated, so there's no point right?) It's just a creative decision since things do look and feel different on live action. It's easier to get around certain aspects of a character when its animated. I really think they just want to make sokka slightly more likeable. I loved the show and every character. But honestly sokka was the most annoying until his final stages of character growth. So im fine with them toning him down. In fact I didn't even care about this aspect of his growth lol

This reminds me of how people accuse Charlie Brown of being racist because they had the black kid sitting in a chair across from all the white kids in the thanksgiving special, despite the fact that the black kid was specifically added _because_ it was the creator's way of fighting back against racism... Sokka learning to not be sexist is LITERALLY THE POINT. Its so annoying that they missed this... JFC the toxicity is starting to bleed over from Twitter to YT. The change doesn't ruin a damn thing. I agree changing Sokka’s character arch to not have him learning that his sexism was wrong will just hurt the character and the show. However I disagree with him saying them presenting the show differently is bad because if they didn’t make any changes and show new things why even remake it why not just go watch the original show.

yall are definitely blowing this out of proportion. i am a long time fan of the series and i think yall are overreacting. when the show came out, sexism was much more of a problem than it is now. sexism is now frowned upon instead of being okay. keeping this as a character arc will be outdated and a little obvious. “dont be sexist” is a message that needed to be conveyed back then, but not as much now. i think that sokka’s new arc could build on more modern problems, which would be more relevant and relatable. the show has already made lots of confirmed good changes, so i think this small change to his character arc that lasted few episodes wont change much, and is for the better.

The og creators should legal loophole their way to have netflix be barred from even completing the live action or at least have it not be dropped. I never really watched the original but I’m definitely on the side of not letting netflix touch any works of art that were already made.
Sokka's sexism is the point. It's shown from the beginning to be a negative quality about him. He gets shown the error in his ways as soon as episode 4.

They are not getting rid of the sexism, they just reduced it because it was really over-the-top in the cartoon

The only thing I'm concerned with is suki... his sexist attitude was a perfect transition for this. But I think they will still include that only men should be warriors. So it should still work.
I just dont think live action needs to be exactly the same. Also, the fact that this is all Season 1. He grows within that season, and Pakku takes the sexist role, and then that even gets resolved.

I thought cancel culture was dying clearly not enough
Maybe we are just complaining about everything for no reason?

I know right people are saying they won’t watch it cause of this. Netflix even confirmed that they are keeping Pakkus story the same and not removing Sokkas sexism just changing it.
7:30 Being honest, I like the fact that they’re gonna add the air nomads vs firebenders battle, so at least that’s one positive the live action can have over the show(I wanna see more airbenders lIVE)
Who else but netflix
Hot take, them removing Sokka's sexism is actually because netflix doesn't want to condemn sexism as the don't want to seem like they're "taking a side" or something. No matter it's all corporate bs, but it seems like a company desperate to be innoffensive would also not want to offend mysoginists
I seriously cant believe how bad this video is lol. And how dumb people are for eating it up.
Literally 😂
Just like a favourite character of mine from a video game that says "What is better to be born good or to overcome your evil nature through great effort."
Do they never learn? LOL And act surprised when the show fails
i swear these remakes always try to portray the characters as how they are in the end without any form of character development these people clearly have zero story writing skills
It's not that deep. We won't lose anything by removing one Sokka's "sexist" sentence per episode
Thank you
Literally this. 👏🏼
idk bout that. we see his character change throughout season 1, and honestly him getting over the sexism was pretty cool.
I agree changing Sokka’s character arch to not have him learning that his sexism was wrong will just hurt the character and the show. However I disagree with him saying them presenting the show differently is bad because if they didn’t make any changes and show new things why even remake it why not just go watch the original show.
Sokka is now a sidekick whit no habilities. Katara will be the main character. Tonk would be lesbian(for sure) and Aang would be trans??? Non binarie? Intersex??? Who knows...
My main critic is that the series is to fast pace, and the development besides very little doenst fell earned
The first live action avatar film was sooo bad i hope this one gets better and fits to the original
I can't believe Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino exited this project due to "creative differences"... That is really not a good sign. 😢😭 Bloody Netflix.
yall are definitely blowing this out of proportion. i am a long time fan of the series and i think yall are overreacting. when the show came out, sexism was much more of a problem than it is now. sexism is now frowned upon instead of being okay. keeping this as a character arc will be outdated and a little obvious. “dont be sexist” is a message that needed to be conveyed back then, but not as much now. i think that sokka’s new arc could build on more modern problems, which would be more relevant and relatable. the show has already made lots of confirmed good changes, so i think this small change to his character arc that lasted few episodes wont change much, and is for the better.
especially considering new audiences as just an outdated, useless message.
like how did this small change get to drama channels like its not that serious-
just checked, the arc is literally 4 episodes.
@@flaeimefr lmaoo
and btw they did confirm they’re replacing the arc, not getting rid of his arc in the beginning.
All the MEN in the village left for war so OF COURSE he thought only men should be fighters but he learns and GROWS
While I absolutely disagree with this change to Sokka, I don't see anything wrong with the show taking some creative liberties here and there.
live action Netflix just makes me want to hide in a cave forever. Like why do they ruin everything. one piece avatar now a SECOND time Pinocio and snow white plus everything else.
I could see this happening "Next we'll tone down the Fire Nation's war crimes because some of them were kind of iffy."
Netflix not understanding "character development" episode 999999:
0:20 "Hes expecting" Someone PLEASE tell me this isn't real 💀
No. The world is that broken
I always love Pegasus’ takes on anything, he’s always so real
i watched like 3 episodes of the live-action one and there is just so much yapping fr
He gets shown the error in his ways as soon as episode 4.
that lawdy lewed jumpscare tho
His redemption literally begins episode 4 with the Kyoshi warriors
This reminds me of what they are doing with the borderlands movie. I was excited about it's initial announcement, but now that the story and trailer has been released, I'm slightly disappointed.
The whole point of the sexism In Avatar is to learn to not to be sexist.
idk why anyone thinks that’s a problem and have to remove it
They didn’t remove it why does everyone think that!!!! Netflix literally confirmed that they are just redirecting it after everyone overreacted
Back when the series was announced everyone said "They cant wait". But all i could think of was how star wars was ruined, marvel was ruined, DC was ruined, Halo was ruined, Disney movies were ruined and despite all the signs of this being a bad tv show people will only now start seeing what they should have known then.
Never knew Disney was making this live action series.
