This was due to increasing pressure on Sky from Hollywood studios and programme distributors to scramble their output, being none too happy at their programmes being available unrestricted to viewers across Europe on the Astra Satellites. Also by scrambling their channels, Sky were able to purchase and screen better programming and movies.
The March 1993 Eurosport/Screensport merged channel launched with a bang in the UK thanks to Nigel Mansell switching to Indycar racing and the Indycar races which were Sunday afternoon in the US/Sunday Evening Primetime in the UK had Eurosport in the UK get big ratings on Sunday Nights
I think the Eurosport/Screensport merge notice would’ve been played until 6th of March of 1993, lefting Screensport fans with a Eurosport channel until RTL 2 (later RTL II, now RTL Zwei) launched. Therefore, Eurosport might be a “rival” to Sky Sports, which is available to Astra/Sky viewers.
The logo that was first used by RTL II for its launch on 6 March 1993 would end up getting withdrawn after only three years. This was because of a trademark dispute with an almost identical logo that was adopted by Cedar Rapids television station KGAN (a CBS affiliate on channel 2) in September of that year. The dispute was resolved in late 1995 with Novocom required to create a new graphics package for RTL II; KGAN was allowed to keep its logo in exchange. During the dispute KGAN was owned by Guy Gannett Communications, which itself would be acquired by Sinclair in 1998.
How time has flown. I remember the old Screen Sport in 1985. They even had their own Final Score type Saturday Afternoon programme, IIRC with Patrick Stenson, (Still got the video clips of those days) I won £1,000 in a Screen Sport Bingo Game. The game card came with your monthly Rediffusion Programme Guide, and you crossed off the numbers as they appeared in between the programmes. I bought a car with the winnings. £1k was a lot of dosh back then. Cheers.
@@siddn they showed the Freight Rover Trophy area finals and the final at Wembley for the first time in 1985. Wigan beat Brentford 3-1. Then they sponsored the Football league Super cup in 1985/86. Which was introduced as a consolation competition for the clubs that would have played in Europe that season, but for the ban on English clubs following the Heysel disaster.
Instead of Screensport we got Eurosport Nordic here in Scandinavia with commentators from the Nordic countries. Initial there were very programs with nordic commentators. And signal came from the Thor-satellite in 1 degrees west I think
The on screen branding was necessary because if you had twenty odd television channels from satellite going out over a cable system in the UK or continental Europe, it's important to know what channel you are watching and having the on-screen logo helps with that.
Didn’t Screensport go after the premier league rights with itv? Presume they would have just got highlights with itv showing live games? Probably would have survived had it been successful? Having said that sky itself would have gone bankrupt by the mid 90’s probably?
Fusion TV Sport - Eurosport. Comment se foutre de la gueule du téléspectateur en passant de 2 chaines gratuites à une chaîne payante. Bravo TF1 et Canal+
Thanks for this, brought back great memories when football was free and didn't cost a fortune to watch on TV
Agreed.
Oh my days! 😲 I've had a Sky satellite dish since 1990 and remember Screensport. Memories.
RIP Screensport, i will miss you.
This was a sad day. It was the end of free tv in Europe. Later in 1993, Sky got subscribed too for everyone except for in UK and Ireland.

When Sky was still free to air on Astra 19.2°E

Golf European and US switched to SKY but the UK tournaments were added under a new deal that was signed in 1993
Screensport was better than Eurosport. Transponder 1 of the Astra 1A Satellite was taken by RTL-2.
30 years ago, tomorrow.
Screensport was replaced on 6 March 1993 by RTL II.
Loved screensport for the Spanish league coverage
from my country, Screensport became RTL Zwei
13:15 RIP Screensport 1985-1993

1. I think that screensport did not go for the prem rights. Only bbc, itv and sky did.
2. Also itv would have probably closed it.
3. They was losing viewers so now.
4. No. Sky had about 20 channels. And this channel was owned by videotron/WHsmith.
ScreenSport did go for the Premier league broadcast rights, along with ITV.
this is why 1993 was the worst year of my dad's life
This makes me depressed.

Au vu du prix des droits sportifs, avoir 2 chaînes gratuites de sport aurait été l'assurance que ces 2 chaînes finissent par se casser la gueule.
What happened to Screensport
They merged with Eurosport
Thank you
Due to low ratings. They merged with Eurosport to make Eurosport/The European Sports Network.
@@ItsABeautifulDay. Screenshot had plenty of quality too. It's too bad, some folks prefer quantity over quality every time.
Okay -_-
