      +Octapud74 It's almost as if some people watch the show because of how "progressive" it is and don't actually pay attention...

    • @Nakia11798
      @Nakia11798 9 лет назад +20

      +PIEGUYRULZ YES. Every episode that had a message for the fandom was ignored entirely. For example, Say Uncle was meant to say that you shouldn't hate something you don't understand, and all most of the fans did was complain about uncle grandpa being "transmysogynistic". Almost everything the show tries to teach the fandom is ignored if it's not "progressive" in some sort of way. It's a shame.

      @JKDavitz 9 лет назад +9

      +PIEGUYRULZ Sadly, that part seems very common.
      Apparently, there is a sort of narcissism that's growing with in the fan community, saying "we like this progressive show, so that makes us better than you"
      I'm afraid that the attitude will poison the community like it did to the feminist community.

    • @greatrieck
      @greatrieck 9 лет назад +4

      +PIEGUYRULZ That is my thoughts too at times, when there is a lot more to the show than being "progressive".

    As a plus sized woman myself, I decided to look at the art and see if it was a wrongful portrayal and if I felt attacked in any way shape or form. And guess what, I thought her drawings of Rose were beautiful, Amethyst was adorable and they're not super skinny, just not as plump as the show portrays them as being. The only reason I can think of as to why people would think this is offensive is if they haven't stepped into the sun and talked to someone for half a second in about five years.

      Do you mean whether or not the swj's (only *important* things deserve to be in caps) would lose their minds if Square were to leave out that part in the remake?
      Most likely.

    I recently got into an argument with someone on Tumblr over another person complaining about others drawing skinny Roses for support of Zamii, and in response they drew a fat Pearl. The drawing got a lot of praise, and then I pointed out the hypocrisy in skinny Rose = bad and fat Pearl = good. Of course, a shitstorm ensued and I got called fatphobic, even though I myself am fat.
    Like ugh
    The Tumblr Steven Universe fandom is horrible.

    • @Vogel100
      @Vogel100 9 лет назад +14

      +DarkVioletCloud The fun thing is they are trying to support people treating fat people the same as skinny people (or at least, that's what they claim), while they are exactly the ones treating it like it's different. And everyone else just doesn't care about if they're fat or skinny, which is exactly what they say they're trying to accomplish while they're the only ones not doing it. This is for everything they say they're supporting by the way. They're the only ones treating females different from males, they're the only ones treating gay people different from straight people, etc.
      And the sad thing is that there are quite a lot of people doing this, also in the real world outside of cartoon fandoms.

      +Ambipie The SU fandom on Tumblr is a cesspoll of SJWs. I use Tumblr, I've butted heads with people like this before. I'm big into the anime Attack on Titan and have been bullied for being "tranphobic" because I consider a character with an open-to-interpretation (as stated by the creator) character female. I'm active and the SU fandom on Tumblr as well, that things like this is not uncommon at all. The fandom is awful and hateful, at least on Tumblr, and this is not an isolated incident by any means. It IS the SJWs, but 99% of the fandom are SJWs.

      @PIEGUYRULZ  9 лет назад +25

      Yeah, and that really bites. Its like these 'boy who cried sexism' cases make people not actually believe it when there really is a problem. That's what's so sick about this situation, SJWs have the exact opposite effect of what they claim they stand for. Meanwhile you have closed minded people who can't understand that just because most cases of sexism/racism/whateverism are just blown out of proportion, doesn't mean there aren't legitimate things worth standing against.

      I never said they were false. Whether something is offensive or not isn't something that can be proven true or false. In my opinion most of the cases of 'racism or sexism' on the internet that people make a big deal about are either really benign or non existent.

      That's because of the old saying, a few bad apples spoil the bunch. Plus we're told SO MUCH about non racist and sexist things being twisted to sound racist and sexist by the over the top SJWs.
      If these assholes weren't so fucked up and didn't almost drive someone into suicide for their fanart, then they're going to stick out and be remembered over the SJWs who do have a good point.
      The over the top SJWs and feminists don't understand that they're damaging their cause in the eyes of the public, and its THEIR fault that their points aren't taken seriously at all. They want attention and conflict in their lives and this is their way, because they can hid safely behind their keyboards. It's fucking sad.

    The worst thing about this is that this artist was picked on for _expressing herself and her enjoyment of the show._
    The people who attacked her did this with self-righteous judgement that they felt was justice. Where could justice be found in a world you can't open up to, because if you try, you end up doing it in the wrong way? _Where's the justice in tearing someone down for trying to be themselves?_
    For a show so filled with compassion, love, and understanding as Stephen Universe itself!
    Couldn't agree with you more on this PieGuy, it is too far. It's disappointing and depressing how people could be so cruel.
    A couple of weeks ago I was already ticked off about this fandom for a similar issue. I can't even accept this new low from these 'fans.' I'm really just reposting what I wrote then, because at this point it's intolerable:
    How could a place like Tumblr, where people try to be all inclusive and supportive toward each other, be a place where the it's _the total opposite of that_? Why are people so superficial over things about each other like this? We already have a lot in life that's against us, we shouldn't be another example of that.
    People who are fans of a show this filled with heart, somehow treats each other with hostility, because other fans aren't loving their favorite show right. They couldn't embody the show any less as they could now. Not even any less than what they think these 'wrong' fans would!

    Its sad that some people don't realize it's actually rather difficult to learn how to draw larger people/characters ad make them look not insulting.
    I'm serious; all my life drawing books have no big models in them! Even our life studies models were all either average or skinny, none really heavy set. So it's hard to draw something when you don't get the option to study it.
    Yes, there's google image searches, but that was something frowned upon in my life study class because it wasn't from one of the recommended books from the class list. I look back at m old work and almost every since person is stick thin because of how drawing books and classes taught how to break down the human body with shapes.
    It took me about 2 years once I was out to actually get the hang of drawing larger characters.

      No problem. Thought it should be something pointed out.
      And to those who don't understand what I mean; it's something to look into. The basic shapes they always tell you to draw either a rectangle (no curves) or a bean shape (giving an hour glass figure with an indented waist); they rarely have you use circles for the torso. So I can't blame people who used books to learn how to draw figures or even taken a formal figure drawing class because they tell you the same thing.

    Absolutely amazing video. It bugs me that I try so hard to be the best and most empathetic person I can be to do the right thing (almost to a point where I drive myself crazy and over-criticize myself) while there are people like that who are complete bullies, hypocrites, and will not even look in the mirror once. They don't even care about morals, don't take pride in themselves and their actions (which allows them to bully others), and don't want to help people at all. I'm by NO means trying to say that I am some saint, but I am putting in the effort every day to be the best person I can be.
    At this point, the most important thing to do is to keep trying to be the best people we can be, even to them. It takes a lot of heart to make a video like this, and you really hit the nail on the head in a well-spoken manner. You've always been my favorite RUclipsr, but my respect for you went up even more after this video. This situation and those people are driving me bonkers as well (I don't even watch Stephen Universe), but just look at that like/dislike ratio. Even though it really doesn't seem like it at times, more people ARE sensible and moral and these loony tunes are in the minority. They are just a very vocal minority and are the ones that love to harm others. They'll learn one day, though. One day they'll see the light.
    Thanks PieGuy for this great video. You're without a doubt the best reviewer and speaker I've seen on this website, and even though this seems a little silly, you are a huge inspiration to me when I review. Keep on rolling, man. You're a great reviewer and guy.

    The worst part is: She's apologised. She's acknowledged that she's made mistakes. I'm personally not a big fan of people drawing Rose as skinny, but if you don't like the art, you don't have to look at it??? Tumblr has a blocking feature and there's a blacklisting option through XKit (which is free and p much everyone has it). Like, you don't have to bully her at all? And even after she's apologised, what does continuing to be an asshole to her gain?
    There was also some scandal where she did a commission for a guy who turned out to be a sex offender and that somehow makes her supportive of paedophilia? Like, she didn't even know??? I mean, I don't get involved in tumblr drama (it's a toxic wasteland of needless accusations and callout posts and texts from years ago. It's all very biased and a bit of a mess), but that's what I've been able to glean. And by their logic, somehow being nice to a paedophile makes you some sort of supporter of sexual abuse? I rlly don't get this community..

      I beg to differ with the, "If you don't like the art, you don't have to look at it." Saying, "I dislike how you are portraying Rose as so skinny, it's inaccurate to the show" is constructive criticism. I don't agree nor disagree with the criticism. However, someone is stating what they perceive to be a problem, and saying how to improve it. And the author has every right to disagree with this criticism. Criticism is needed for artists to improve.
      The thing is though, everyone went off the deep end and fucking exploded over the smallest goddamn thing. If someone is screaming at someone else over "fat shaming" a cartoon character then something is wrong with them. They need a reality check. Someone drew a character to be skinny, it perplexes me that people take so much time and energy to get offended by this and harass someone over it. Don't people have better things to worry about?

    • @1Kitty19
      @1Kitty19 9 лет назад +3

      +Da Police I certainly see your point, and those ppl were welcome to give their criticism. But honestly, when it angers you that much, you have options. You don't have to sit and boil and become bitter is more what I meant. Leave your criticism (in a way that isn't aggressive) and get on w/ your life.
      I absolutely agree with that entire second paragraph, though. There's this whole community of tumblrites that 're just hate-filled and will get angry at anything. I personally think they're a bunch of 12-year-olds who see the progressive ideology, but only think in terms of black and white, as kids their age are wont to do. I dislike it, so it's morally bad. I like it, so it's morally good. The person behind this thing must be bad b/c I take moral offense to it. They're stubborn and act like children b/c, for the most part, they are children (or at least think like them) and it just... rlly bothers me that a show about love somehow attracts these hateful ppl.

    • @moddedpan4252
      @moddedpan4252 9 лет назад +1

      +Tori Bastia I am not defending the tumblrinas by any means. What they did was horrible, and has no excuses. Sorry if my first paragraph gave off the connotation that I was defending them. I was basically saying that any problems someone has with art should be stated, but in a mature manner.

    • @1Kitty19
      @1Kitty19 9 лет назад +1

      +Da Police I didn't perceive it that way at all. I just wanted to clarify what I meant. (And also vent a bit about the goings-on in this community b/c holy shit, the things I have seen). I love this garbage site, but my /god/ it's this one specific community of these belligerent individuals. And this type of thing happens all the time, usually on a lesser scale (it's usually just personal drama made public). I guess that's what I'm annoyed about the most. There're all these callout posts and full blogs dedicated to bullying certain users for a whole host of reasons. Sometimes they're pretty major (abusive relationships and such), other times they're minor (hating on John Green b/c you don't enjoy the way he writes women), but it's always nasty and it always feels a bit like overkill. And I never feel like it's trying to gain anything. There's no endgame, just nastiness.

The problem is, these people find it moarally wrong and think they need to go on a righteous crusade to stop it.

Same with Zamii being "transmisogynistic" for useing the word guy and dude on women. Every word you say is scrutinized by these people to tell lies about your character.
    I also think they ended up calling Rebecca Sugar and Ian Jones Quartey pedophiles. Still when the Tumblr/SJW crowd goes with any argument related to children and protecting the children, they are just the left wing version of Helen Lovejoy. I do hope the general disgust from the online community to this leaves potential future victims with a healthier network and support for their art.

    Yeah I heard this already and at the time I was pissed off, insulted, and disgusted how I found this in my subscriptions especially in the SU fandom. Granted the sensible and reasonable fans of any fandom especially this one don't stoop this low and would never support this and aren't at fault and I am apart of this fandom as well as others fandoms but I am so sick of finding this type shit and for what reason? Because it was "offensive" and they have to hate on that person, really. This shit has gone too far and too long and it is this minority group of SJWs and toxic people that make this worse and make the fandom look bad. I'll never accept this shit and I hope the person will be okay because she doesn't deserve any of this and she shouldn't have to deal with any of the bullshit. I don't fucking care if Rose is drawn skinny or fat but to get so "offended" to hate and send death threats is where I want to scream how wrong and disgusting and vile they really are for this.

Drawing fatter characters as rails or conventionally hourglass was used to taunt the people who thought it was so great that a larger character was portrayed as awesome. And they were NASTY about it. They'd follow folks and taunt them for being overweight "how dare you start to think you can be accepted".
    So a bunch of dumb teenagers looked at these fatshameing folks and said "look at them! look at them and how nasty and bad they are for doing this awful thing, we really need to get rid of these people" And they figured anyone who drew the character not large enough must be one of those awful awful fatshamers and it's "absolutely okay to do to them what they did to others".
    Now you might think you and anything you're associated with would never do that, but take a good look at the comments and you probably won't go five seconds without reading about how we need to get rid of "SU fans" or "tumblr" or "Fat-positive" or "for some reason feminists are mentioned because they always are". We humans are hate addicts. We want to fight even if it's not even remotely required. We want an enemy to fight and destroy so we feel less awful about how imperfect we are. We want to point at something bad someone else did and say "look at that horrible person! Lets get rid of him any anything that resembles him and help the world be better" rather than look at our own faults and try to fix them.

      I think the difference is that I'm not trying to make a call to arms and say "let's go get these people". I totally understand the flip side of this and actively disagree with the people in the comments saying we need to "do something" about these people. I know that there really isn't much we can do unless we want to stoop to their level which would be very hypocritical and wrong. The only thing that can be done is to collectively point out how idiotic and wrong the situation is and promote being constructive in a positive way. I don't think I said anything about hating all of tumblr or feminists or the SU fandom. There will always be jerks in every group. However certain groups are more prone to being an echo chamber than others.

    Art is meant to be stylized your way. By pen, or pencil, or paint, or watercolor, or ect. In your way. That's what makes an artist an artist for what style they have.

    Yeah I hate this whole accusatory BS attitude that's been permeating for several years. It's like if you have a dissenting opinion from someone you're automatically anti-this or that even if you have good intentions. People nowadays like to squash things that they don't understand/are different to them and this makes me sad. People have the right to interpret things how they please.

    • @frickengamer149
      @frickengamer149 9 лет назад +3

      +youroneandonlyneighborhoodboi Yeah, it's upsetting to think that people genuinely don't give a damn about your motives and cut straight to the blind critical hate that they think you deserve. This artist just wanted to interpret Rose the way she/he wanted to. The artist didn't necessarily mean anything serious by her/his interpretation and gave no real reason for it. Yet people, despite not knowing any intention or background information, decide to fire shots at anyone and anything that's even remotely offensive or belittling to any sort of minority. I dealt with this type of shit in elementary school. People hated me for some of the things I did without even wondering why I did them (they were 8 year-olds, so it makes sense). I would always attempt to explain in a mature manner and tone of voice WHY I was who I was, but to no success. They believed that I should just be like them and that they could just change me. Being cut off so much ended up giving me some serious anger-issues which have only subsided in recent years. So what I'm saying is, a large majority of the people on the internet can be compared to bratty 8-year-olds who believe that they're doing the right thing by putting people down at every turn without even bothering to care about their motives. Any actual reason is quickly rebutted by denial from the attacking side, thus leading to an endless, pointless, chain of comments that takes up space when you click "See all comments." Criticism and opinions are just fine though, don't get me wrong, but when you start turning it into a seriously violent extremist opinion where you believe that what you hate shouldn't exist....... it gets sort of messy and a lot less constructive than some other criticism.

Like I can't blame them for recognizing that there are social issues in the world, it's how they go about at it that's weird. Instead of attacking everyone and having a judgementary bias they should be more open minded and considerate of other people and their beliefs.

    The ONLY thing I agreed with in the tumblr fandom was the want to keep NSFW work in the NSFW tag. Tumblr isn't meant for children, but there are children on it, and it's better to not expose them to porn. Everything else was dumb though, like people called me transphobic for not believing the trans Lars headcanon (which had little to no backup), I was called racist for informing someone that Garnet wasn't human and therefore couldn't be black (black coded, but not actually black), called homophobic because I didn't take issue with the pewey ship, told I was a horrible person because I related to "abusive" Pearl, called fat phobic because I didn't mind skinny rose art, called ableist when I said I thought a character might not be autistic, and basically eaten alive when I said it took me a while to realize that Garnet was more than a friendship (I'm pretty bad at recognizing different relationship levels, not my fault.). Anyway, that was just what the fandom did to me, let alone others.

    I love this show, however it upsets me that people are being so negative about a positive show. The more perfect a show can pull something off, the more people expect everything about it to be perfect, the better something is the worse people are about a subtle difference. Perfection causes perfectionists, this show is very good with it's accuracy and continuity and when something challenges that there will always be someone to ruin it. So if you are someone that makes art and are slandered over your work, don't stop. Even if no one likes your work, you do, that's all that matters. I draw but I don't care about negative criticism because people are still looking at my work, weather or not they like it, they analysed it and thought about it... good enough for me. Sorry for the long comment but some people don't think about what they are doing until it is to late and cover up the incident like it never happened with an ego.

All because a _fictional character_ was drawn by a _fan of the show_.

    I love this. I tend to be overly PC, but I can't even comprehend shit like this. Yeah, it kinda sucks that people draw canonly larger characters to fit the societal idea of "pretty," but how can these people go from "I'm slightly upset by this portrayal made by a total stranger" into "LET'S MAKE THEM KILL THEMSELVES!"??? Even if you disagree, always try to do so in a respectful way. You don't know the story or intentions behind everything someone says, makes, or does. Even if they are INTENTIONALLY being mean, even if it's insanely-over-the-top hateful, YOU need to be the bigger person if you actually want to make any change. No one likes being yelled at, and if these SJWs actually cared about the causes they fight for, they would be willing to have a calm debate.
    The only reason they lash out like this is a mixture of mob mentality and the desire to feel better about themselves ["You did THIS thing, but I will HEROICALLY tell you how awful you are for it!"]

  • @FilmmakerJ
    @FilmmakerJ 9 лет назад +3

    No matter whether the good lessons and good morals come from a writer, a poet, a movie, a cartoon, or Jesus himself, there will always be people who forego the most important teachings, the most humbling of words, and the most tolerant of practices, in favor of picking out something which was said or expressed that they can use to bully other people with. It's almost a primal need in certain minds that makes them crave to want to yell, and scream, insult, and berate others for often very minuscule reasons, just to feel some amount of satisfaction: as if they are doing the world a righteous service.
    This is a despicable mind-set. It never makes things better. It almost never leads to real change, and good thing too. And it does great harm not just to the victims, but the bystanders who find themselves equally associated with the people causing the most ruckus within their ranks.
    I by no means blame the Steven Universe fan-base for the actions of these outliers, as I am a fan myself. And every fan-base that rallies around a show or title like this, perhaps even the recent Undertale game, are going to have their radicals who wish to do more harm than good. The best thing to do is to stay strong, to ignore the trolls and harmful comments as much as possible, rely on your friends and family for support, and work through the tough times. Because eventually, everyone finds something else to complain about.

    • @Amishmediagroup
      @Amishmediagroup 9 лет назад +8

      +Chris Ale 1- They've accomplished the following: Being jerks to the point of the victim of abuse wanting to kill herself, hating a piece of art because a character is skinny in the work.
      2- Their method is to insult and harass people to the point of contemplating suicide, just like the example below.
      3- Their end goal is for everybody on earth to stop making anything creative, different, interesting, cool, helpful, relaxing, or anything at all basically.
      Example-
      SJW: You made a bench? That bench is short. Almost like you built that bench to insult people under 8 feet tall. (bunch of swears that I really don't have time to type and would take up at least 1000 characters) You should rot in hell, kid. You have no purpose in life and you need to stop existing. If you have time to make a bench you also have time to make a noose to hang yourself, you bloody prick. Stay away from society. Nobody will ever like you. Anyone who is currently your friend will want you dead within 3 weeks. Satan doesn't even like you. Your parents never loved you. Al Qaeda and Isis don't want you because you'd make them look bad. Really, get a grip. Quit making benches. I don't care if that wasn't your intention, you made a bench that insults people under 8 feet tall and you need to stop. Everybody who will sit on your skillfully crafted bench will be cursed and die within 1 week of sitting there. If they want to stop and take a rest because they have been jogging or something, they will surely die very soon. Anybody who might be interested in buying your bench will be in the intermediate zone of a nuclear attack, where they will slowly rot away from radiation poisoning, making them suffer for weeks. You are the worst freakin person ever because you made a bench that probably won't insult anyone, but I really don't want to take risks. Really, go jump off a bridge if the bridge is above an active volcano filled with lava and fire and burning rocks and stuff.
      I hate SJWs.

    Pieguy tweeted this, and I think it's a very poignant point that needs to be understood:
    "What makes SJW harassers so much scarier than trolls is that they think they're righteous. Trolls just want a lol, hate mobs want you gone."
    As much as I wish this was the case, prejudiced people aren't stupid. They look for reasons to justify their prejudice to society. This is why we have people like SJWs and militant atheists-they claim to be the ones fighting against bigotry, when nothing could be further from the truth. They get a lot of people to buy into their logic. The cycle of hating is a vicious, never-ending one.
    On another note, replace "hate mobs" with "cyberbullies", and you have the perfect rebuttal to Enter's shitty Troll video.

    I think you did the right thing posting this. (Don't let the haters get you down if they happen to get after you for it, since you are just expressing an opinion, and you DID warn people.)
    While I think there are problems in commercial media with body issues and how magazines, television, and movies portray women and men utilizing digital manipulation (especially how there are unrealistic expectations with how someone should be proportioned by a lot of commercial companies which sell clothes or put out other media), I also agree that a fanart made by someone on deviantart, if it isn't depicting something horrendously disturbing, pornographic, or illegal, is essentially harmless. It's just a fan who's just expressing their love for a television show.
    She's also not forcing anyone to look at these depictions you describe. These people who are harassing her, if they really wanted to make a difference about how media portrays unrealistic body aesthetics,, they should take their grievances to those magazines or media companies that allow starving models on their covers, and stop picking on some person online they don't know.
    By choosing to pick on someone online and harass them, they're actually making people view their cause and points of view in a negative and unsympathetic fashion, especially since they're doing it in a disrespectful manner. These individuals are trolls. And based on what you're saying, there is no excuse for their harassment, and if they're so offended by some pictures, they're not obligated to continue looking or comment on someone's fan work, since they aren't paying for it. They can simply go to a search bar and find something else to look at if they want to see something in particular, and voice their opinions by not patronizing that person's web page or whatever if they disagree with them.
    In speaking out, I thank you for saying what people are sick of seeing from these trolls. Continue making vids expressing your opinions, especially on today's kid shows, because you have some great insight.

    This is one of the reasons I deleted my tumblr. People are so quick to bully people over such silly things. I had someone tell me to kill myself because I corrected someone who was trans. Like, being a minority doesn't mean you're always right, or that people pointing out your mistakes are racist/sexist/homophobic/transphobic/ableist. The call-out culture on Tumblr has changed from calling out complete bigots to calling out everyone who disagrees with you or makes a mistake, and it's really hurtful to everyone on both sides of it. I was always the one to state my opinion if it had logic in it, so I got attacked a lot. I think anyone with any kind of open-mindedness should stay off of tumblr.
