Thanks. Just found your channel. I had planned to book passage on a cargo ship before the pandemic for the experience, to film it for my new travel vlog, and as a way to transport my belongings from Greece back to the US. The freighter company I was looking is French. Any word on when cargo ship travel will reopen?
I did this in 2001 from Liverpool to Philadelphia (8 days). Freakin’ fabulous. Have flown across the Atlantic many times, took the QE2 once, a couple of fancy cruises, and while all I recall of the flights was the noise of the engines and constantly thinking “When is this going to be over? Wow, this is long!” I remember many, many awesome things about the container crossing (three jaegers trailing the ship for miles, a whale in the distance; a cool little nighttime storm (German Captain somewhat dismissively called it a “low pressure system” in a friendly way next day at dinner) that put yards of blue green water over the bow and massive white explosions of foam/spray over stories of containers visible in the super powerful spotlights he had on and made it hard (for me anyway!) to walk to my bathroom (the comfy room was huge); great conversations with the officers and crew, days of contented contemplation of the sea sitting in the sun, supercool stuff to see happening in the ports; blessed disconnection; time and space to think. A wonderful experience, BUT you need to be a self-starter, able to amuse yourself with reading, writing, sitting and thinking, just being peaceful. As this video stresses, it’s not a cruise, and the slow passage can be a blessing or a curse, depends on you. Great video and great way to travel. Basically comes down to: “Do you want to rush through your life or live it?” Hope I can do it again someday, this made me nostalgic!

@@wertiaaudit5746 Actually, any 'Murican amendment will fall on deaf ears once you step on an ocean liner; the moment you step on the gangway the rules of the ship's class flag will apply and there's no helping you once you're in international waters or until you step on the yellow line in the Customs bldg.
Nice video. I have just booked a cruise from Singapore to Genoa, Italy. It will take 110 days about 15 ports to visit. Singapore, Vietnam, Hong Kong, China, South Korea, Japan, Panama Canal, USA, Germany, The Netherlands, Italy. No internet or phone access. Great. My last trip was from Sydney to Singapore only 16 days.
I am currently in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam typing this in a coffee shop near the port. As there is no internet connection on board the ship I will use every opportunity to read my E-Mails and stay in contact with family and friends. Later on I will go sightseeing. We are leaving tomorrow for Hong Kong. There are only four cabins, 2 single and 2 twin. We are two single women and a couple. We haven't met before but we are all ex-Army. We are all trained in Martial Arts and have decided to practise every day. We don't see much of the crew but share the dinning room with the officers from Germany and Italy. The food is really good, three meals a day and snacks in between. All cabins are air conditioned and have private facilities - cabins have coffee making facilities, TV, VCR player and DVD with a small library of books, a lounge and a laundry. There is also a small outdoor pool. I won't be bored as I am writing my dissertation on Banking and Finance. The Taxi for the sightseeing tour has just arrived. I am looking forward to exploring the city. Maybe something more when I am in Hong Kong.
I am currently in Hong Kong and found Internet access in a coffee shop. They charge me AUD 90 a day. Everything is included. Three meals a day including snacks, wine, beer and soft drinks. Once a week they clean my room. I could do it myself but they insist. I can use the laundry facilities I do my own washing. Everything is perfect so far just no internet or phone access. I don't mind. We will spend about two to three days in different ports. Soon off to Shanghai, China.
I have done this and you guys have got to understand there is not necessarily going to get Internet you better bring books you better be able to entertain yourself and the food is decent but it’s not what you’re probably expecting
Travelling on a cargo ship is on my bucket list. Spending a month or two at sea, away from my problems, away from my family, and away from the shithole town I reside in sounds like heaven to me ☺️😊
C'mon guys, all you lot whining about the Clatts arm movements, think about it, if he falls over board he could swim back from just about anywhere :) In all honesty though love the vids 😁
holy shit...thank you for exposing this to me. i love to travel but the cost of it is a major drawback for me. this is definitely something im going to be thoroughly checking out. this is right up my alley.
This video was super helpful. I just started the booking process for a transatlantic crossing the day before this video. This video the first of many I'll watch today, just confirmed how much I want to take this voyage. Subbed and Belled
I was on one of these cargo ships a few years back travelling from Hong Kong to San Francisco. I thought it was an "experience". Man! What a mistake! First, the cost was higher than passenger cruises. Second, they dock only at freight ports. You would be lucky to find local bus or train or even taxi cabs! Third, the food? Well, cooking was just like home. No fancy stuff. Often, the eggs were burned and you couldn't complain. In their eyes, you were transparent. Passenger cruises are like floating five star hotel. Cargo ship travel? Just a floating home from A to B. Costly experience. Not again!
I think you're the first one I've even seen give a tutorial on this I just happened to find this video in an online article just randomly browsing the internet and is a great guide. I'll definitely share this.

Really interesting Tal. I keep seeing your cargo ship videos from this series popping up but this is my first chance to catch one. It's something I've always been really interested in doing since a family member did it from Auckland to LA a number of years ago. Thanks for all the tips! - Thomas
For me this would be an ideal adventure. I am a retired 200 ton master merchant mariner. But have always worked in the oil fields in much smaller craft. I would be interested in the ship's operations. But, I know from experience, discharging and loading cargo takes place usually in areas far removed from town centers and attractions. Plus the loading/unloading schedule and the type of cargo dictates how long you will be in port. Befriend a member(s) of the crew that is familiar with the port. You can accompany them when they are off watch.
Hello! Judging by your comment, you are a man with experience in the maritime business! I would be very grateful if you have some answers to my questions. - Is there any way to get from Europe to Canada by sea, maybe on a cargo ship? - Do they check for a Canadian visa on board ? - Which ports in Europe are the most likely to get on the ship ?
It is like being in the Navy. It actually looks kind of nice. One has to realize it is a working ship vice a pleasure trip. They will be working, while you get to hang out. Bring a book, if there is a gym, spend time at the gym.
Captains and crew do NOT carry weapons on board and most ship's do not have armed guards either. It is true however, that piracy is not a very big issue anymore, and there are other effective methods of discouraging pirates. Just stay away from slow vessels with a low freeboard (distance from the water to the deck), if you're concerned.
I sugest choice general cargo or bulk carrier vessel, them will take longer time than Container or PCTC vessel on port for cargo operation, so you can have longer time periods to exploring city near by port, if you lucky you can get exotic destinations city/country too...
Congratulations! Thank you for showing this video! Very well presented! It was very inspiring! You used very good music! Thanks for sharing! Huge likes (7)👍👍👍! Thank you for uploading! Have a nice day!

I figured you'd just be a part-time crew member with a small bribe instead of actual traveling, but granted most ships don't require much labor anymore. Maybe someone to make sure crates don't get toppled in storms and ensure everything is tethered, but no one needs to hoist masts or tether poles.
