- In the crucible of the Cold War's fierce aerial competition, Pavel Sukhoi, a tenacious Soviet engineer, relentlessly pursued his dream to create a transformative aircraft.
His vision eventually took shape in the Sukhoi Su-7, an audacious creation that was a daring fusion of cutting-edge design, advanced aerodynamics, and raw, unyielding power.
As the test pilot fired up the engines and catapulted the machine skyward for its maiden flight, the earth below transformed into clouds and sky.
Despite countless setbacks and failures, Pavel remained unwavering in his quest to create the ultimate fighter-bomber. Yet, destiny had other plans in store for the service life of the Sukhoi Su-7, most of which would extend far beyond Soviet territory.

Very informative! However, showing propeller aircraft while discussing jet aircraft was distracting.
Don't you think that's bc the west has no footage of the ussr building its jets? I mean come on
It's a simple way to use the same video for both a Sukhoi and a Lavochkin documentary 😅
01:12 You forgot to mention the horses and cavalry tactis.
Yeah I was confused on why they were showing what I think is an I15 while talking abt Mach 2 speeds 😭
I am pretty sure they are showing the SU-1, which was a Sukhoi WW2 plane. Not the S-1 which eventually became the SU-7.
You are talking about a mach 2 capable jet, but the video kept showing a propeller driven plane. Poor production quality that should have been caught and fixed before posting.
Yeah especially because it was so easy in the 60's to have a camera and being able to move around freely and there was nothing secret in the Soviet Union. We are talking about a state that praised themselves for opening the first toilet paper plant in 1969 and you could get arrested and taken to gulag for taking a photo of a Military train. Guys start using your brain before talking or writing such shit.
It almost looks like AI was used to select pictures without any human input.
"Dark" is always doing this in all his videos. Showing wrong, irrelevant footage.
Stretching the Creative License to its limits and beyond!
@@Emdee5632 in one of his video's talking about a WWII US warship, a cruiser if I recall correctly he was using images of a Canadian 280 Tribal class Destroyer, after it's mid life refit and conversion circa 1985 or so to represent the Second World War US ship.......shoddy and lazy workmanship.....
Mach 2 in a propeller driven plane! That's astonishing
LOL yes, obviously wrong footage
@@ronpartainxrp reminds me of the classic comedy movie, Airplane, they keep showing the exterior of the passenger jet, but play Piston engine noises lol!
@@BurningPhoenix1995 noooo!!!! Physics is the operator's manual for the universe!
Lol😂
@@ronpartainxrp yeah think? /s
Production quality really went downhill recently. Talking about a turbo jet and showing extensive footage of a prop plane.
There does seem to be a discrepancy between the narrative and the pictures. The propeller driven aircraft looks like a Lagg product of 1944. Other wise very interesting. The variable geometry wing version would improve take off and landing speeds. Cutting down on fuel consumption. Perhaps enabling carrier landings?
I agree the disconnect between the videos and the narrative was unusual for this series and was disconcerting.
He sometimes does that
my guess is limited footage of the aircraft.
Dark Skies has always been sloppy with the images vs narration in his videos but, this junk video takes it to new depths. Just inexcusably bad video production and almost worth reporting as clickbait.
This channel is notorious for showing the wrong pictures such as this one where it pictures of piston driven airplanes while talking about airplanes. lol.🤣🤣
This Sukhoi Su-7 (Nato code name Fitter) is a beautiful jet aircraft. I just wish Dark showed us more footage of it. And please: NO jet engine sounds when you show us a piston engine aircraft. By the way, what the ** is that jet aircraft in the thumbnail?
Looks like a early version of the mig 21
It’s an Su-9
Why do the Sukhoi Su-9 and the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 have to be so similar? 😄
Because their commies & they copy us or the germans
Or each other!
If it's a turbo jet why show video of a prop driven plane
A psyop hoping to strike fear into the Red Baron. Just incase he’s listening
Same reason why the Russians talk about a stealth fighter but always show footage of the SU-57.
@@kdrapertruckerunderrated comment.
I love the work, but In my opinion, It would be better that you use an image of the plane being mentioned rather than footage of another aircraft.
I'll add to the deluge...it would be nice if the stock footage you're mining is at least remotely referential to the actual content. Use of appropriate stills would be better than having footage of prop-driven planes while talking about innovations in jet technology.
I like the approach of Nazi and Soviet tech to be presented as ''Dark Subjects''...
Why you showing La-7s when talking about Sukhoi and advancements in supersonic flight…?
Because they don't know their asses from a hole in the ground? The BEST aviation vids are Greg's airplanes, Dark Skies maybe the worst and most error filled.
Yeah but Greg only does WW2 stuff and that’s all done too much
@@TyrannoJoris_Rex Not exactly true, he's done John Boyd in Korea and the tomcat to name a couple. Unlike dark Skies he's meticulous AND correct and will say if he's not sure of something.
These idiots might talk about a space capsule or whatever and show the Wright Flyer.
Shame that the video and audio don't match at all in the beginning.... Talking about a jet yet showing a propeller driven plane!
The Afghan pilots were outnumbered? I didn't know that the Mujahideen had an airforce.
No Afghanistan HAD a reasonable airforce .. much like Somalia did ..but after the fall of the governemt/ country turning to shit ..they lost most of their armed forces . Somalias had loads of MiGs....but they let them all rot
It posted...🤔... MIG 21s...🤷
glad im not the only one that noticed
@@invisiblecrumb2027 .🙋....😎... Likewise, I was thinking did I miss something in the description?
This channel routinely gets things wrong
I found Su-2, La-7, MiG-21, Su-9 and many others. But it's Dark Skies, You can get used to it. In the last one (J35) there were pictures of Mirage III.
The story is about a jet powered airplane illustrated by piston/propeller powered ones. What gives?
Prop driven aeroplane doing close to Mach 1.5??
My favorite plane, Su-22 is based off of the Su-7
May I suggest some more experimental planes for future videos, including civilian models? You talked about the P1 Explorer in the past.
Never knew an Su-7 could land vertically. They were so far ahead of their time!
That vertical landing things is the Yak-36 experimental pllane. Su-7 certainly couldn't land that way.
Yes I was being sarcastic. The Su-7 is also not the MiG-21 shown in the thumb
@@cpt_bill366 I watched this because of the mig-21 thumb - boy was I confused by the first minute or so.
I was confused how the mig 21 was either "dark" or especially "mysterious".
@@cpt_bill366 yes but the Su9 Fishpot looks like a MiG21 but was larger .. basically it was a delta winged Su7 ..but only had a short service life because the MiG21 was more efficient
This video is totally jacked up. Totally wrong audio for the video
do story of Y-22 eagle serbian ground attack and aerial reconnaissance aircraft
The constant clips of prop planes make this video nearly impossible to watch.
Nice audio, narrative…If I closed my eyes! I appreciate that finding film of old Russian/USSR aircraft is difficult, but at least perhaps film of jets, not prop planes?
My father worked with these aircraft and they were hated by both the pilots and the mechanics. They were just an intermediate solution and not a very good one.
That interesting Bubafonek and I don't dare challenge your father's first hand experiance.
I have read and listened to interviews of pilots and ground crews alike who state that 'it's a reliable and steady platform for low-altitude attack'; 'it's of a rugged construction and simple to maintain, as well excellent for use from second-class airfields'; 'it's NR-30 30mm cannons destructive effect on target is superior to that of the 20mm M61 Vulcan and 30mm ADEN/DEFA cannons'.
I guess one really has to appreciate the S-1/Su-7 original linage, being designed as a pure supersonic fighter-interceptor only to be pressed into service as a fighter-bomber. The then philosophy of this first-gen relying on a single fuel thirsty 10-ton thrust engine to produce the brute force to propel it to altitude as quickly as possible had to have a detrimental penalty of short range and limited payload for when it principly became a ground attack. aircraft
I guess with many initial designs their shortcomings can be rectified - as would be the case when Sukhoi designed and built the Su-17 - new engine optimised for medium/low altitude and viable-geometry outer wings....
Regards
The only way to watch this video is not to watch it at all. Close your eyes and just listen.
There was a lack of picture materials for this, or why there are so many soviet WWII Lavochkins accompanying the talk about one of the Soviet hot rods from the 50s/60s?
Thanks for this 👍✈️
Whoever was making the video got very very confused between the Sukhoi Su-1 (1940s prop plane) and the Sukhoi S-1 (1950s jet plane). The first one can go supersonic, but only once.
As an aviation enthusiast, I can't tolerate short docs with unrelated and improper footages of aircraft and the focus of the narrative theme. Dark skies...lift your game!!
I always enjoy the random images unrelated to the narration. Picture of fluffy ducks: "It struck terror into the hearts of the enemy".
Suggestions; Fairey Gannet; the ugly but brilliant Fleet Air Arm aeroplane. English Electric Lightening; an RAF Cold War icon. BAe Hawk and Goshawk.
And many people dont remember of the lastest family member of this plane was the star of Top Gun.
The original Top Gun was stories about the fight between US Navy F-14 Tomcat and Libyan AF Su-22 Fitter-K
the part about egyptian air force SU 7 performance was unfair at all
why is there jet soundtrack on propeller plane scenes ?
Watching these video help me know the history of the planes I playing in Warthunder.
Yes, what are all the propeller planes for? Nonsense.... and most of the jet photos shown are Mig 21s.
Nice footage of Lavochkin La-5 / La-5fn ....and Su-2❤
If you don't have video of something just use a still or a technical plan.
What success of Sukhoi BAD JETS almost only one LEFT from USSR so whey still use it
What I find most amazing is that Dark Skies has not either pulled or corrected this video.
Guys the propeller driven La-5 footage is only really in the first quarter of the video
A good video but with some misleading footages. Not to mention prop aircraft but also Su17 or even Sabres when talking about Su7. Best regards
Some may have the impression that a prop-driven plane is capable of any mach number, much less 1.84 from the video. Nonetheless another interesting and most informative video. We are grateful for this super channel.
Well, O.75 *is* Mach number. /s
@@fredlanga8605well, you're not wrong
@fredlanga8605 true. my Toyota is still handling well at .1
Vtech kicked in yooooo
Interesting Video, Thank You. 🇺🇸
Reminded me of the funny scenes in the movie "Airplane ! "
They always had a jet flying but it had the SFX of an old 4 engine prop plane for comedic effect. . Here we get a prop plane with the afterburners on.
Very intersting narrative but showing very wrong aircraft too often...
You really need to get your video library sorted out, even using stock clips of a Mig 15 would be better than prop driven aircraft.
Come on, I know it's not always easy to find footage of these older planes, but seriously, you should be able to do better than all those clips of prop fighters when talking about the S-1. Love your channels, but sometimes I really have to shake my head...
There is something wrong with the spoken text and the videos that are shown
Being a GI back in the big 73 war, Egyptian Air Force didn’t leave any real impression but the Egyptian artillery gave us real hard time, mainly sleepless nights
This is of course very individual
That top speed has got to be wrong, impossible on a prop plane.
This video is like watching a video about MX race bikes while showing video of folks on peddle bikes
Given the commentary is basically lifted from wikipedia I guess he has to run to a particular duration on the audio and so has a lot of video space to fill without having material available to do so so fills it with 1940s piston engined plane footage.
Hardly any relevance between what's being said and what's being showed in the video. Talking about a Mach 2 aircraft and showing a Propeller monoplane. That's not only distracting but also disturbing.
No way the SU7 carried dual 600 gallon wing tanks. That’s larger than the propane tank my house uses for heat (500 gallon).
That’s about 3600 pounds of fuel. Theoretically possible to carry that on a large plane. An Su-7 is 20k lb empty, MTOW about 33.5k.
So… probably not an Su-7, but not impossible.
I enjoy this RUclips channel but I take the "technical facts" with a huge grain of salt. It's much like listening to a drunk talk.
@@robertsansone1680 lmao, at 11:03 he says that in the 1987 Battle of Jaji the Su-7 was outnumbered and outgunned... by who? mujahidden with flying DShks?
There are also a number of Mig-21 pictures sprinkled in here - understandable with some of the grainy photography from the day.
Why all the footage of La 7's and Yak 36?
Most people only think of MiG and its famous fighters, while Su remained in the background. This all changed after the fall of Soviet Union when Sukhoi (along with the Su-27 the Soviets response to F-15) and its fighters became the only real competitor to Western designs. To the point the Russian/Indian Su-30, Su-33, Su-34, Su-35, Chinese J-11 and J-15 are variations on Su-27 platform. Even the Su-57 is more an evolution of the Su-27 than totally new aircraft. Though that was intentional in order to keep costs and logistics low for deployment in Russia and its export costumers.
So what was so mysterious about it? fast at altitude, slow on the deck and no legs.
Well, it is now time to investigate at the often overlooked SU-9, 11, and 15 interceptors.
The Su-15 will always be infamous for shooting down Flight 007 in 1983
Do you know the difference between a propeller aircraft and jet aircraft? Too many channels?
Who knew Sukhoi built all those Lavochkin airplanes? Sigh. This site assumes its audience is clueless, and doesn’t care if it remains that way.
...perhaps he's moved to AI-enhanced production?
Bring back the Mach 2 prop fighters!! Love to hear that sound traverse the sky!!
there's jet footage in your prop video
Why the heck were you showing a bunch of WW2 prop planes while talking about the jet?
A little bit too hasty of a production, friend. I am a follower and a fan of your channel.
The fuselage looks almost like the "Thud"...
How very mysterious, audio is talking anout a 1956 jety fighter and I se WWII prop driven planes, that look anything but Sukhoi......that is interesting there was even a scene despicting a dogfight with a Me109 , well, that definitely blew my mind.
However I'm still hopeful I'll get to see a Fitter, maybe an older Su17, and then the later Su22, I`ll keep watching, maybe I'll get lucky..........let's see
nice MIG21
I know that this channel never reads the comments and doesn't care if what they are visually showing even remotely matches the voice-over. They actually prefer having things wrong, so the comment section explodes, and they shoot up in the RUclips algorithms and get more view, consequently making more money.
Never thought of that before. Engagement is engagement regardless of what it is. If it's true I guess in some ways you have to respect playing the algorithm like they are.
I guess, there is a confusion, S-1 (Russian Cyrillic С-1) was a WWII era plane by Sukhoi, while the one made in 1957 was P-1 (П-1, likely, a designation for interceptor - "перехватчик", sort of akin to how Americans also designated those with "P" for "pursuit").
Was that Batman forever music in the beginning
2:02 mm yes, the very advanced nose cone of the new "jet" looks a bit like the nose cone of a prop ngl
Why is the first 3 minutes in a video about a jet fighter contemporary with the MiG-21 and the F-100 Super Sabre all WW2 piston aircraft, most of which are not even Sukhoi designs?
I see a lot of Yak's and Mig's. When will you adjust your visuals in conjunction with the narration???
Could we get a big red cirkel around the plane or a big red arrow. I didnt know what to look at on the thumbnail 😜
Ooof, sucks having half a missile up the chute pipe..
C'st quand même incroyable que vous nous montriez des images de Lavotchine La-5 ou La-7, alors que vous parlez des développements des premiers jets de Soukhoï !
Uhm....as an aircraft enthusiast who actually crunches numbers, i can say this is a Hype-driven video. Su-7B had a short glory day, and was considered 'basic plane A' for a long while after. It was never mysterious, it was a small bomb truck. (compared to, say, the Bear or Beagle)
nice top speed, though. easy to fix....
Wow
Why an earth for minutes we see WW2 era Lavochkin fighter when 15 years later jet is talked about?
In way was this "the cold war's darkest?"
Please make a video on the rivalry between Mig and Sukhoi, and the lobbying/corruption that has played a role in the failure of aircraft like the Mig 35 and Mig 1.44.
These people seem happy to drop almost any aircraft clip in regardless of what they are talking about. The basic Su-7 seems to have been similar in intended role to the F-105, very fast at low level, primarily a nuclear strike plane. The wing sweep was similar to the English Electric Lightning, 60 degrees. ASIC weakness, big thirsty engine, only 4 hard points, two of which had to have drop tanks for any decent range. Pluses two 30mm cannon, very tough airframe, Indian Air Force pilots would do chin-ups on the pitot boom, try that on a MiG-21 or F-100. Bizarre ‘feature’ skids on the main landing gear, I’heard of unimproved fields, but come on. The swing wing Su-17 was a much more useful asset, better field performance, better war-load.
yeah the propeller planes are irritating.
Bro you were showing Lavochkin piston-fighters meanwhile talking about supersonic aircrafts... Something went wrong
THE Fitter seems to share many characteristics of the F100 in the USA.
2:10
Why are you showing a PISTON aircraft?
They didn't do supersonic (except rarely in a steep dive!).
Is no one gonna talk about the batman music in the very beginning lol
The Fitter was a brute that muscle fucked it’s way through life but it’s range was almost laughable.
...given that North Korea's Air Koryo is still operating IL-18s, IL-76s, and IL-62s It wouldn't surprise me if their air force was still operating SU-7s.
So was it a prop plane, swept wing jet, or delta wing ?
The narration was great but why did it keep showing LaGG fighters during the first half?
Why has it film of LAGGs? It is the question everyone is asking.
The Su-7, a powerful fighter-bomber with just enough range to bomb the end of its runway.
Cool vid.. but stay away from the coffee.
Aren't those Hawker Hunters at 9.32?
Yes they are
In soviet russia all props are mach 2 capable...
Why do you show images that have nothing to do with the subject? It's so distracting...
Are you aware that the prop fighters are mostly Lavochkins and Yaks, and that the jets in the video are cca 50% MiG-21's?
And what is the purpose of including an F-86 Sabre?
