The band I’m in’s been together for coming up to twelve years. We have thirteen members but two of them (both singers) can only manage to be with us for about three of our gigs per year.
How come?
We avoid discussing politics as far as possible.
A very talented keyboard player/ sax player and arranger left as the responsibility he felt he had for the band overwhelmed him.
Since he left it has become less hierarchical, with authority proportional to talent. Ie the fabulous bass player has more than I do.
The horn section is stunning and we know that gives us impact. We know it’s a blessing to have them.
We play mostly danceable soul and pleasing the audience also pleases us. The singers especially are really ‘for the audience’.
Of course we tolerate our differing dispositions. I’d say there are several dyadic (two person) friendships within the band which overlap enough to provide cohesion for all 13.
We lost a charismatic singer to cancer in his 40s and our cherished memory of him also provides an imperishable spark. He was a great singer and his mic talk to the audience extraordinarily lewd. We often recall what he got away with saying.
Oh yes: 13 isn’t an unlucky number.

Yeah, I prefer to work with competent blue-collar musicians than virtuosos. My band of five is now down to me and a partner. I'm a fiddler and he plays banjo. We play old-timey music at historical events and venues. It's so much easier than when there were more of us. Occasionally, we'll pull in a bassist to play dances.
