- This is part 1 of building a 00 gauge loft layout in this episode I take a first look at the space and discover I’ve a lot more room :)
Lots of space. Loads of potential. Hope it's going well. I'm catching up with everyone's videos. Thanks for showing. Regards Paul.
Wow Mark - lovely bit of space. I cant us emy attic as herself has use it to store all the family junk in it, hence the shed is my home! Cant wait to see how you do all this - really looking forward to watching you build your new layout.
Regards
Steve
Space looks great Mark. Still some work to do. Now it’s the planning stage. The the build. All the best Mark. Regards Tom
Thanks Tom yeah hopefully after the floor things will be less daunting 🙂
I see why you are so pleased with the new space you have for your model railway good luck with the next few weeks looking forward to seeing the results all the best Tom
Thank you Tom
Acres of room up there Mark! Very interesting space(s) ….. should be a great build 👍👍👍
Fingers crossed looking forward to seeing how much space I can utilise, thanks for watching 🙂👍🏻
Hi Mark. Hardwork to prepare the loft space first. Better insulation required below the new flooring and above your head but first a new central heating system to remove the old water tank. To clear the decks for an exciting new project. I wish you well and look forward to watching your progress
Thank you, yeah the water system does need updating, but not in the budget just yet lol, flooring or water 🤔😉 once flooring is in then your right a bit of insulation required- bigger project than I thought but hopefully worth it in the end 🙂🙂

Hi Mark.
Just started watching the start of your layout.
Love watching people's progress as time goes on.
Looks a brilliant size.
Hope you didn't breath any of that horrible loft insulation.
Also seen your vlog of the tube out of Ruislip. Worked on the central line for 14 years, brought back a few memories.
Stay safe buddy.
DELPH JUNCTION (Pete)
PS. Love the dog.
Thanks Pete, the layout size at the moment is 16ft by 11ft but will be 32ft by 22ft once I’ve boarded up the other side of the loft, I did make sure I have a dust mask on at the time I did the floors, wow what an interesting job working on the line atb Mark
That's a big space with plenty of potential, it seem most people agree in boarding the whole space if you can. The mascot has to stay I was quite amused seeing it peering out of the chimney.
lol it frightened the life out of me at first, yeah after lots of comments about the flooring I will get it all covered, don’t want any health issues from it. Then I can also work out how to utilise all the space 🙂
Hi Mark- Great news you have moved in at what a bonus on what space you have . My thoughts is to have the whole area floored and also think about having a loft ladder put in also as I have found having one very useful. What you might also think about is to paint or seal the brickwork to keep the dust down too. Take your time planning the track work and remember there is no rush .
Keep Safe
Cheers Kev
Thanks Kev, definitely after reading the comments I’ll be flooring the whole area, good idea about the painting not thought of that, and yes a loft ladder will be required but may have to do it in parts, going to cost me a fair chunk on the flooring I feel just waiting on some quotes now 🙂
Hey Mark….. loads of potential. Just a suggestion….Board the whole loft floor first. That way you will keep the dust and dangerous particles of fibreglass insulation at bay. Then you will have a safer and clean working environment, to insulate between the rafters, fit some lighting and build your baseboards.
I’m really looking forward to seeing this project develope.
Good luck 🤞
Regards…. Steve 👍
Thank you, I’ve definitely taken on this advice for the whole floor to be boarded and now waiting on a quote to have it all done, don’t want any health issues from being up there 🙂
Wow that is a massive area to fill. Take your time in making plans, don't rush in to it, I hope you will go open framed and on several levels. You are going to need pots of money to prepare the loft first. Looking forward to the next update. Regards Alan in the loft :o)
Definitely agree about the cost my first quote was 2000 just for the flooring lol I think I’ll do it myself, then I’ll see what I can do with the space, do like the sound of levels though I was just going to do 4 lines but I’m sure now I’ll be re thinking it 🙂👍🏻
that's a really lovely space! you could even do the loop running round the outside of the loft and have 2/3 areas of key importance for scenery or stations/yards to maximise your space! (your railway you do what you want really - im personally not a fan of one massive board, id rather be able to sit in the middle and get access to all areas if I need to! - you however can do what you like!
Big congrats on the new home, can't wait to see what you do with it!
Thank you, after lots of comments about the flooring I think it will all be covered, so I’m definitely toying with the idea of the layout running the entire loft, see how much the flooring and insulation sets me back first then I’ll have an idea on how much money is left for track 😂
Looks like a great space Mark you'll see where you're going when you've got your flooring done. Good luck with it all mate atb Andy
Thanks Andy, yeah definitely the biggest obstacle at the moment but once like you said the flooring is done I can then plan my space out 🙂
Good luck for the amenagement ! Should be a nice place for the layout . Best regards , Robert .
Thank you Robert 🙂
Nice one Mark, that's a great space to model railway. You'll be very excited. Look forward to seeing it all progress. :) All the best, good luck with build. Brian @ The Angels
Thanks Brian, a big job ahead but will be worth while n the end hopefully 👍🏻🙂
Hey Mark got a nice space there buddy can't wait to see your progress mate 👍💯👍
Thanks Dylan, yeah agree it’s looking to be a great space so far, should be finding out today or tomorrow when I can get the flooring laid then I can start planning sizes for baseboards and then work on track plans etc, I hope your keeping well my friend 🙂👍🏻
That's an impressive amount of space ! Good luck with the project👍
Thank you 🙂🙂
Looks great ,lots of work coming your way
Definitely a lot of work 😬
Thats a very decent space! I'm looking forward to seeing what you make of it! :)
Thanks Will, agree it’s looking alright for a good size layout 🙂
That's a good amount of space, but looks like a fair bit of work before trains can run. Best of luck at the beginning of the journey!
Thank you, definitely got some work to do 😬
You could always get someone in and make a gap in the wall or ask someone that knows what they are doing good luck with all of this new project cheers Paul
Thank you Paul, Might be something I could consider in the future let’s see what if any money is left after the flooring 😬😂
@@HemelDownModelRailway good luck hopefully there will be 😂😂
Hello Mark, glad to hear that things are slowly settling back down. You definitely have a nice space and room to create an entire circuit around the loft. I was glad to hear that you are wearing a mask as there was all kinds of dust moving and you don't need to breathe that all in. Great to see you posting a vid again! Take your time and we'll be here!
Thank you Anthony, definitely with a mask last thing I need is health issues from this, after lots of comments I will be boarding the entire space and then maybe I will think about a whole circuit of the loft, see what pennies are left after the flooring, might not even be able to afford the amount of track needed 😂
Will good build to see mark keep up the good work thanks lee
Thanks Lee
Hi Mark - great potential 👍 in this loft space. Cheers Euan
Thank you, will be good to see the space once the flooring is done, then I can plan more 🙂
Great space, go for the big chipboad flooring sheets they`ll work out cheaper than the diy loft packs and it looks like you`ve got the room to move them about, looks like you can get a much bigger layout in there now.
Definitely going down the chip board route to save money where I can, it’s so much bigger than I planned so I’m guessing that the cost will be too 😬, hopefully worth it in the end though 🙂
Hello Mark, That is going to be cool - Looking forward to see how that changes in time. Lots and lots of Train space! 😺🚂
Thank you, agree will be a nice space to use can’t wait 🙂
thats an awesome space Mark!
Thanks Mystic, hopefully soon once it’s light and flooring down I can work out the space better 🙂
Hello Mark, WIshing you the best. It will be awesome.
Thank you 🙂🙂
@@HemelDownModelRailway 🤗🤗
@@HemelDownModelRailway 😘😘
Looks very promising 👍
Thanks, agree a lot of work but worth the effort 🙂
Wow mate this is going to be awesome I would love a layout up in the loft
Thanks Digger, yeah I can wait to have some usable space again 🙂
Looks like a great space for a layout Mark 👍🏻
Thank you, hopefully you’ll get to see it better once the flooring is sorted out 🙂 hope you and family are well
@@HemelDownModelRailway We are good cheers mate. Hope yours are good too. Congratulations on passing 500 subs 👍🏻
@@LocoLeighton very well thank you, and thanks btw surprised I made it to 500 🙂🙂
@@HemelDownModelRailway You should get access to the Community Tab soon. Think it took about 5 days after passing 500 for me.
Nice that will be helpful I think it’s only been a couple of days but looking forward to using that 🙂🙂
Nice to see the space, always gets the mind going when you consider the potential an area can have. Just make sure to take time with your design to avoid getting stuck with something that could become irritating later on operationally. (Not that it's possible to design away all imperfections haha) Thanks for posting, looking forward to seeing the next progress video.
Definitely agree, need to take my time to ensure that flooring and insulation is done correctly, after that I can then take my time on planning and building, need to keep my feet on the ground and not get carried away 😂
Great potential up there, looking forward to see your build grow. One suggestion would be place a fuse box on the wall where your 240volt comes into the loft that will give you extra safety and a good basses for your lights and 240 sockets. Stay safe.
Hadn’t even thought about that great suggestion thank you 😊
Hey Mark, I think you are going to have an amazing layout with all that space looking forward to seeing your progress. I hope you do not put too much pressure on yourself to get the trains running. Please take care and stay safe. :) :) :)
Thanks Colin, the pressure will definitely ease after getting the flooring down, that’s my biggest issue at the moment, I’m not going to rush it though rather it be done right 🙂
cover the complete floor the house will be warmer then add a frame up the roof sides put in more insulation on both ends
get them from chemist alaminium mask with filters thats the first job - 2 filter the air - 3 fit light in other part of loft - 4 get the bords down as fast as possable to cover up the fibre glass then sit and think
Hi mark, cover the whole floor area be a lot safer add a couple of velux windows for natural light then insulation in between the rafters and think about your layout cheers Al
Thank you Andrew, lots of comments about the flooring so yes will be looking to get the whole flooring covered, unfortunately will not at this stage be able to get windows in, but I’ve had planning permission to extend on the end so if the loft gets bigger in the future then I may see if the budget allows some light 🙂
Can I rent half of that space, lol ? Look forward to seeing the build. Good luck.
Ha ha yeah it could well be up for rent to cover the cost getting the flooring in 😬
Hi Mark - I am guessing that chimney breast is still in use otherwise if you were able to remove it, wow that would give you a huge railway room.
Regards Chris
It’s still usable, and for cost reasons it will have to stay for now, but without it agree what a space that would be hopefully I’ll get creative and hide the chimney 🙂
4 lanes around the chimney then add 9 rails behind the chimney as a yard
That does sound good 🙂🤔
Did you strengthen those joists? Sometimes they need beefing up to make them fully load supporting.
Yeah in a few places I added extra wood supports, when it was converted from 2 cottages it had some extra supports put in too around the old chimneys
no cover it all use 5 ply drill and screw so you can lift it all if you move again - you have to cover the fibre glass you dont want it on your chest
Thank you for all your comments I will definitely be getting it all covered just waiting on a quote now, like you say I don’t want any health issues from this thank you for your advice 🙂
Nice space. Are you insulating the roof
Thank you, yes definitely will be sorting out the insulation after the flooring is completed 🙂
@@HemelDownModelRailway before is definitely easier than after lol
get a electric filter to clean the air so you dont get fibre glass dust in your lungs
