    Leeds Art University getting so low in research makes sense because it’s a creative univeristy - our practicals, process and portfolios are weighted much higher overall in our degree rather than our written work/dissertations. My dissertation only made up 15% of my overall grade for my BA degree, whilst I had friends whose were worth much more. I think it’s an academic vs. creative thing, which is why (unfortunately) many wholey creative universities do not rank very high on tables like those. Creative as in, graphic design, fine art, illustration, interior design, architecture, creative writing, creative advertising, animation, game design etc.

    You mentioned how hard it is to get into St. Andrews. My children got places there, but not at Oxbridge. Getting into Oxbridge is difficult as you're in competition with the rest of the world. It also depends on which College you apply to. Anyone wanting to get into Oxbridge, do your research on the College you want to apply to.

    • @victoryuan1904
      @victoryuan1904 6 месяцев назад +2

      The thing about college application is that usually nothing is guaranteed. Things like students accepted by oxbridge but got rejected by schools like IC, St.Andrews, LSE or certain UCL programs can frequently happen, and so is the opposite.
      I would agree though that oxbridge are more renowned internationally.

      I got into St Andrews but not Oxford. Honestly... I think it was the TSA. There were final exams at my school, I learnt about it last minute... And studied for it for an hour. Obviously I performed terribly and didn't get an interview. I was applying for a more philosophical course, though, and the test was mostly British maths, which is kind of questionable (also an international student here).

    Big problem with entry standard is that different qualifications are translated to A Level grades. Scottish Highers are largely inflated (much easier to achieve for example the equivalent of 3A*s in terms of ucas points). This makes Scottish unis in general have higher entry standards in these league tables then in reality. St Andrews entry standard is not even at the level of imperial, lse let alone oxbridge.

    • @harrysparke6277
      @harrysparke6277 Год назад +18

      I mean without sounding impolite… you are wrong, for 3 primary reasons. 1, assuming that there are many Scots at St. Andrews. There aren’t. Roughly only around 20-25% of admissions are Scottish. Also, many of those Scots do advanced highers, which are technically above an a level in terms of difficulty. Furthermore, it is actually easier for a scot to get into oxbridge than st Andrews due to its popularity in Scotland and the student cap St. Andrews imposes on Scottish applicants. For example for medicine, the offer rate for a Scot applying to St. Andrews is 13% whereas for Cambridge it’s 15%. For economics the offer rate for a Scottish student is 9% at St. Andrews and the offer rate for econ at Oxford is 13%. So your argument that scots are the reason why st Andrews has high entry standards doesn’t really work. Furthermore, if you look at the offer rates for universities this year, St. Andrews has an offer rate of 25% whereas imperial has an offer rate of 32.5%. So saying the St Andrews’s competitiveness is inflated isn’t exactly true. It is one of the most competitive universities in the UK, rivalry oxbridge is this regard, but I admit not quite surpassing them overall. However you have to take the tables with a pinch of salt as they only reflect ucas points, which is not the best way to score entry requirements.

      Access to HE is also much easier from the standard A level. I had exams throughout the year instead of everything at the end.

      @@harrysparke6277 Incase anyone actually believes this know st andrews does not rival oxbridge, lse or imperial. The economics course referenced has a minimum entry requirement of ABB.. I'm not bashing the university, seems to offer a great student experience with traditions and sorts but is not known as elite in any circle (employment, academics, etc). I can imagine many students uninterested in the "elite" status with strong grades would go to St andrews and have a much better experience. Similarly with Bath, Bristol, Edinburgh, Warwick, Manchester, King's, UCL (although some of these universities have elite departments). I personally belive "elite" matters very little but I wasn't pursuing a path that requires me to care. For those that are I.e. academia, finance/law etc it's important to know. (Offer rate mean very little. I know many people who applied for St Andrews with good grades, only those few with amazing grades applied for oxbridge. Actually, only those few really wanted to goto oxbridge and the rest knew it was an auto rejection).

    • @harrysparke6277
      @harrysparke6277 Год назад +1

      @@TrollXVXV your ABB comment means nothing. The offer rate for econ is incredibly low (can’t be bothered to find the exact stats but it will be below 20%.) St Andrews, as you already said, had the highest ucas entry points… which means the highest proportion of students receiving top grades. If you actually look at the calibre of student applying for econ at St. Andrews, they all have a plethora of predicted A*s. As a matter of fact, 3 of my friends from school all applied for econ at both St. Andrews and lse for econ ( 1 combining it with history.) all had 3A*s predicted and all were accepted by lse but rejected by St. Andrews. Furthermore, St Andrews consistently ranks top for econ in the country. I don’t see how your ABB comment proves anything and I don’t see how you can argue that St. Andrews doesn’t rival the top uk unis.

Any good Russell group university ( Durham, Edinburgh, Imperial, LSE, York, Warwick etc is competitive) with internship, solid extra curricular and good degree will be competitive to get you where you need. Cambridge and Oxford cannot be unseated..and rightly so. Five things truly determine the quality of a university.
    1. Resources/Endowment/Facilities. No university in the UK comes close to those two when it comes to resources and endowment.
    2. Faculty. Because of their history and resources, no university can compete with OxBridge except for LSE and Imperial
    3. Academic well-roundness. Most universities excel at a handful of disciplines. Oxford and Cambridge excel across virtually all disciplines
    4. Student quality. Cambridge and Oxford are the most selective universities in the UK, no matter what any ranking says about St Andrews
    5. Prestige. While prestige is hard to measure, and not always important, it does matter in attracting faculty, bright students and employers
    Bottom line, Cambridge and Oxford are not going to be touched anytime soon.
    St Andrews is excellent, but I think LSE and Imperial are the next 2 universities in the UK. UCL would come in at #5. Then come the other great universities, such as Bath, Bristol, Edinburgh, Loughborough, St Andrews, Warwick etc...

    Lancaster and Loughborough are both perfectly decent non Russell Group universities but the Times and Guardian rankings into which they are placed within the top ten (or nearly so) are simply preposterous. The actual top universities in the UK are best judged by the top employers in the UK and beyond. Take a look at the High Flyers online annual rankings of the Top 20 most prestigious universities in the UK. Neither Lancaster nor Loughborough make it anywhere into the real world Top 20. Look also at the QS world graduate employability rankings. They show that Russell Group universities such as Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham, Leeds, Nottingham and Warwick are very highly ranked indeed by national and international employers. The above six universities are placed by the High Flyers at a higher ranking than Cambridge (7) or Oxford (10). Some of the 'academic' rankings such as the latest Guardian 2023 table are grossly irresponsible and misleading to sixth formers and those seeking to join the best university that they can. The Guardian and Times rankings tables are simply at variance with the far more reality based views of major UK and international employers. See also the QS world university academic rankings which tell you straight as to which UK universities are the most respected across the world. The hard headed QS world rankings often differ greatly from the parochial snobbery which afflicts some UK university rankings. For instance universities beloved of private school applicants such as Durham and St Andrews are always in the top 10 in the Times and Guardian (which employ a great many private school educated journalists) yet are manifestly lower ranked internationally than for example Manchester, Birmingham or Leeds.
