Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero, Tetsuzō Iwamoto, Pearl Harbor 1941, Hobby Master HA8810

- Tetsuzō Iwamoto (岩本 徹三, Iwamoto Tetsuzō, 15 June 1916 - 20 May 1955) was one of the top scoring aces among Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service (IJNAS) fighter pilots. He entered the Imperial Navy in 1934 and completed pilot training in December 1936. His first combat occurred over China in early 1938. He emerged as one of the top aces of the Imperial Japan during World War II, credited with at least 80 aerial victories, including 14 victories in China. Subsequently, he flew Zeros from the aircraft carrier Zuikaku from December 1941 to May 1942, including at the Battle of the Coral Sea. Iwamoto decorated his planes with victory markings of cherry blossom flowers, with a single or double blossom flower referring to a shot down enemy fighter or bomber aircraft respectively.
Like many Japanese veterans, Iwamoto was reported to have fallen into depression after the war. His diary was found after his death, with claims of 202 Allied aircraft destroyed.
Today's example is by Hobby Master in 1:48 diecast, from the Air Power Series and is a Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero-Sen/Zeke IJNAS Zuikaku Flying Group, EII-102, as flown by Tetsuzō Iwamoto, IJN Carrier Zuikaku, Pearl Harbor, December 7th 1941. I made this video today on the 7th of December 2023 as a mark of respect to remember what happened on this day so many years ago.

I don’t collect ww2 diecast planes but always enjoy learning about the pilot and background of these airplanes. I try to do the same with my 15 airplanes I collected from various squadrons and nations. Adds face and history to these planes which I enjoy

A very beautiful model. Especially at the end of the video, where on the stand and with gear up ☺ But, when HM made the 1:48 scale model, they failed to make an opening cockpit. DW, in 1:72 scale, did it. And here even 1:48...

The zero sure is an elegant looking machine. Haha glad you enjoy the in flight bits 😉 who says a single voice can't cha he things in the world,haha. Yes the canopy isn't as good as their normal releases. Other ones you can slide, or get a second one that hinged open. This you just get the one that's in the closed position, at least it's removable 😀. DW are really good models, the amount of detail in their 1:72 models is amazing. 😀
I remember seeing this and the P-40 warhawk that was flown by kenneth taylor, kinda regret that i bought them when i had the chance

Iwamoto did not go to Pearl Harbor but went to the Coral Sea in 1942 . I am Japanese
My apologies if I am incorrect, I just went by the information that Hobby Master provided on the box and that it's an aircraft it says he piloted while aboard the Zuikaku (which was involved in the attack on Pearl Harbor) from December 1941 until May of 1942 before being sent to Rabaul in 1943. I did not intend any disrespect and do try to find what I think is accurate information....I am not Japanese, but did learn it briefly at high school,haha. We used to have Japanese exchange students come over to attend our school 😀. Thank you though for taking the time to comment and watch my video and once again my apologies if the information is incorrect!!

Yes it's crazy hey, talk about rotten luck....it's amazing the stories you read while researching an aircraft and it's pilot 😀. I really enjoy putting faces to planes especially. These arent just machines shooting each other out of the sky. There are/is a human life/lives in everyone no matter what side of a war they maybe on. 😀
@@heavymetaldiecast That’s an interesting perspective. I’m guilty of not thinking about the men who flew and died in these things. I give a lot more attention to the airplanes’ specifications, paint jobs and armament 🙈
@@shinra2755 no need to feel guilty for that at all. To me it doesn't matter what flag your fighting for, it takes courage. These men didn't choose to go to war, crazy leaders and world events made that choice for them. I had a grandfather in the Luftwaffe and one in the Wehrmacht. Neither were Nazi's both thought Adolf was a tool, but they didn't hesitate to fight for their country. And if I can briefly talk about a models pilot I feel I honor there bravery by doing that. And hopefully the viewer enjoys it too 😀👍

I had a great-uncle escape the Japanese in Burma. I don’t know much about that as he lived abroad when I was growing up.
I recently learned of the difference in the organisation of German troops into the Waffen SS and the Wehrmacht. Kinda made me feel a bit better about being a little obsessed about German engineering and innovation during the war that they weren’t all in the N-party.
@@shinra2755 yeah contrary to what most people thought, especially during and after WW2 not everyone German was a Nazi. Hell they only just got into power in the beginning, was never a majority vote 😀. Probably would would never have got into power at all if Germany wasnt screwed over after WW1. My oma met Mr.H and her brother was in the SS but detested the views of the ruling party. He unfortunately was killed in France. Was similar as you would have learned with the Wehrmacht. They weren't big fans of the Waffen SS or the way they behaved. Yet AH favoured them and trusted them over his own army...But hey I could waffle on for hours,haha.
