Chopsticks: Chinese VS. Japanese VS. Korean

- Chopsticks can be difficult to learn to use. Some countries in Asia have specific types of chopsticks and specific etiquette on how to use them. Many people don't notice the difference between types of chopsticks, so today I will be comparing Chinese, Japanese, and Korean chopsticks.

I have 5 chopsticks. Not 5 pairs of chopsticks, but 5 chopsticks. Everyone asks me why.
A friend had 10 chopsticks. He told me I could take a few to myself. So I took five.

Paul J. Morton my main question, how does everyone know you have 5 chopsticks? my secondary bonus question, if Nazi Germany was so bad why were they the first ones to create animal rights legislation?
Paul J. Morton do you rotate the one you don't use?

Food smells seem to turn men on more than others. Turmeric, vanilla, allspice, and other spices have been used as or in perfume, and perfume smelling of pumpkin scores well, too, if I recall correctly.
There are many good smells in Chinese food that might work in a fragrance and might not be that hard to reproduce. Our man is onto something delicious here.

edit: jeez guys chill. It was just an observation, not a "oh all Asians look the same". I think i would know better, i am one too. Y'all are quick to label people *racist* over anything these days wow. That wasn't even meant in a disrespectful way. I have nothing but love and respect for this guy, I've followed his channel for a few years now.
He does a bit. I can tell different kinds of Asians apart so it's not even a "thinking all Asians look alike" thing for me.
He does a teensy bit. His last name is Chen which is very similar to Chan though which is pretty suspicious!
He looks like Jackie from the Cartoon series
And the PS1 game too LMAO

Type does not matter. Watching my friends rage because they dropped the dumpling halfway from the tray to their bowl is what matters. Seeing them try to eat rice is hilarious too.

@@DTux5249 XDXDXD good stuff dude
So my dad is Korean whilst my siblings dad is English (we all share a mom, my family is a little confusing haha) and it's funny seeing them rage over chopsticks. I'm trying to teach my youngest sister how to use chopsticks and likes the stabbing method XD
My dad tried training chopstick, but still can't use them, so now he asks for a fork instead.
The waiters tend to look confused when even the two little kids at the table can use chopsticks perfectly, while a grown man can't.
@Suga's UwU's 😱
Since i was stationed in Korea in 2006, i use that style of chopstick more frequently than the others. I bought a set of 10 stainless steel chopsticks and then bought the Japanese style in bamboo and use those as well for eating all Asian dishes. I make sure to use a spoon for my rice, and that is how i have taught my kids to eat Korean food.
Koreans have the most sensible way to eat rice

2:16 the flat metal chopsticks in this photo is the most common standard chopstick you’d find in a Korean home. Also the traditional korean etiquette is to eat rice and soup with spoon and side dishes with chopsticks. And DON’T lift your bowl from the table.
The one he has is actually a chinese chopstick, or more like how chinese chopsticks made and sold in korea are like. They are vacuum hollow on the inside so they are very light and are found in many school and hospital cafeterias.
don't they use the spoon or something else like a bowl though
I'm Chinese, we have all three different kinds of chopsticks in my home, lol.
I've got chopsticks from India
It's natural and simpler to use your hand as we are supposed to when it comes to eating. Spoon, is the only thing that's gets a pass rest like fork, chopsticks, knife just extra utensils to wash.
KL yeah but some people don’t like getting stuff on their hands 🙄
@YourNatureBoy27 LOL
YourNatureBoy27 wtf
Great research!! I want to add more things about Korean's chopsticks though. why are Korean chopsticks flat and made out of steel instead of wood? well because we sometimes use chopsticks for tearing apart Kimchi and fish etc. and sometimes Korean banchans (sidedishes) are heavier than the other countries' so we don't like wooden chopstick because it is bent and twisted sometimes when you grab heavier things among banchans. and you have to use metal chopsticks especially when you have a Samgeytang or Gamjatang because you have to separate your bone between meat with metal chopsticks. and think about Korean bbq. if you use wooden chopsticks then your chopstick will burn by the fire.
most koreans do not hate japanese people. they just hate japanese authorities which do not regret what they have done in the past.
I'm sorry you get hate from Koreans =(
I'm Korean and one of my best friends is Japanese! I think Korean pop culture owes a lot to the Japanese. Also was going to say I prefer Japanese chopsticks. Been using them for years, and the lightweight pointed tips work well with what I eat. Don't want to seem like I'm downing my own culture. Korean food is still my favorite food. Just saying both cultures have a lot to offer, and are similar in many ways.
Correct, I also think the sharing is mutual. ^_^

@@emotionlessd9711 Same lol
The Chinese ones is perfect for me😊
This guy is hilarious. "Chanel Fried Rice." 😂
I use the Japanese style chopsticks at my house and especially appreciate the little grooves at the end that help hold slippery foods. I can't do the Korean metal ones, though I do use the Korean spoons with the round vs oval shaped heads. The metal ones just hurt my hands too much, especially the solid/slender type more typically found in Korean homes than the hollow rounded version you demonstrated with.
Japanese chopsticks with grooves at the end are cooking chopsticks. But whatever works, is a good thing.
Things have probably changed now, but when I lived in Japan (decades ago), grooved chopsticks were only for cooking. Maybe they've become more popular for diners since then? Seems like a good idea.
I rarely got that type of chopsticks in Korea. Usually it was the thin flat ones.
At restaurants, or when shop, and thin flat chopsticks that look silver are also the stainless steel chopsticks that we use.
The thin flat chopsticks are usually the proper ones, but when you eat out you often come across the rounder lighter ones. They are cheaper
The thin ones started in the 1950s because korea needed more steel and making chopsticks flat would help. In the past like the joseon era chopsticks were round.

id probably go for the korean stainless steel. they can be washed in the dishwasher. the wooden ones needs to be handwashed

You do need to get new wooden ones after awhile.
And stainless steel can get rusty but can last a long time if taken care of correctly.
omg like its so hard to wash chopsticks
u use a dishwasher ?!?!?! i use it for storage cuz my mom is the dishwasher
I live in an area with a lot of Korean-Americans, so I use Korean chopsticks a lot. My family actually has more sets of chopsticks than forks now, even though I'm not Korean (or Chinese or Japanese) at all. I always used to get weird looks at school when I brought very American foods like mac & cheese and ate them with chopsticks. 😂
Do you remember the one scene in the movie 'Barry Gordy's The Last Dragon' where the main character is sitting in a theater eating popcorn with chopsticks while watching a movie? I just had to laugh when I saw that.
How tf do you eat mac and cheese with chopsticks… I need to know
I was confused by Korean chopsticks the first time I went to Korea and had a meal. I didn't understand not because they're metal, but because majority of them weren't round. They were like flat and thin. I ended up preferring them though, especially when I'm cooking. Chinese chopsticks are a bit awkward to hold for me because they're so big but I can still use them okay.
As a non Asian, I find myself using chopsticks much more frequently than I would imagine. Usually, chinese, but I do have Japanese as well. But whenever I eat meat and veggies that are cut up in decent sized chunks, I use chopsticks...Plus, they are great for cooking. Better than tongs most of the time.

Koreans are right to just eat rice with a spoon. Ironically, [in my opinion] chopsticks feel better to use than western utensils most of the time, but it's when you have food like rice that it's better to use the western instrument.
What about chopsticks from southeast asia?
In southeast Asia, it depends on what culture you are, eg. I'm Chinese Malaysian our family typically uses Chinese chopsticks
Far as southeast Asia, the country that uses chopsticks on a regular basis is Vietnam. I believe Vietnamese chopsticks look similar to the Chinese ones.
It depends on the rice I guess. Sticky rice is okay with chop sticks, but the looser sort... yeah, I'd rather have a spoon.
sticky rice wiff spoon? i use hand much more tasty
In terms of SE Asia the Chinese-style food is eaten with chopsticks, but some of the more local dishes, especially rice, are eaten with a spoon and fork, where the fork is used to shovel rice into the bowl of the spoon from a flat plate. Or you use hands.
Chopsticks are more suited for the Asian style of eating though.... Western meals tend to be large slabs eg. steak, chicken drumsticks, meatloaf, etc rather than Asian dishes where everything's in bite sized pieces already so it's easier to pick up, and as for rice it's normal in Chinese etiquette to pick up the bowl and hold it to your mouth anyway. On the other hand, with Korean etiquette, picking up the bowl is bad manners, hence the spoon to scoop it.
This is from personal observation anyway, and as a SE Asian person who frequently eats East and SE Asian food
I eat using those long japanese chopsticks that's typically meant for cooking. It was a gift for me (my friend did not know the differences between chopsticks) and I used them almost every day. Now I can't use short chopsticks

maidpretty they're easy to use just a little heavy
To account for the weight there are flat ones like in 2:15 or hollowed out ones.
maidpretty i tried the korean one it was weird

The Korean one is pretty tiring to use if you use it like how the Chinese do - which is for everything except soup. It is supposed to be used sparingly with the spoon.
This guy looks exactly like Jackie Chan
Yep. He knows it too. And it's not even a case of "all Asians look the same" - I've never seen another Asian guy who looked like Jackie Chan before. But I swear, these two were separated at birth or something.

Lol I feel you though
Kalyssa Mckinney I dunno what it is, but I recently used Panda Express chopsticks and they were really tiny. They seemed more like the Japanese ones.
Wow. You sound so cultured…
Been in Korea 9 years. The chopsticks in your video aren't the most common Korean chopsticks. The most common are metal, about half as thin, straight, flat, and with a slight taper. These truly take much more skill. I used to get hand cramps and fumbled with food. Now I can pick up one grain of rice with ease. Korean chopsticks offer precision. Koreans do however use Chinese style chopsticks for cooking. Great video!
When we lived in Okinawa, our favorite restaurant had rows of boxes for the "regular" customers, which had their own chopsticks.
I always preferred stainless steel chopsticks; it's more ergonomic. They are very light and comfortable in the hands. I can pick so much and my hand never hurts after long hour of use. It also makes my right hand equal to my left. (I'm left handed)
they are heavier than japanese bamboo chopsticks and more slippery at both end (more difficult to use and harder to grip the food)
Not ideal for wet foods. Needs more effort just to grip with metal ones. They tend to be heavier than bamboo one (unless very thin and hollow). And I haven't really met anyone Asian (yet) who thinks metal ones are easier to use. Same goes to plastic ones. It also absorbs heat, so if you leave your metal chopsticks in a really hot dish, ouch.
It has more cons than pros. But I do respect your personal opinion, it means your tastes are unique.
Lol long hrs of eating
@@roku_nine so thats why its good workout ?
I like the Korean ones just because I like the metal, but my hands are usually dry and makes it hard to hold a set of slippery metal chopsticks. Also, do not leave them in a bowl of hot noodles or your liable to burn your lips.
I'm Chinese and I use Korean chopsticks...

Tried teaching my mom how to use chopsticks. She just proceeded to stab the food. Task failed successfully.
At least we don't use knife and fork! We eat rice!!!!
I prefer Japanese chopsticks because they're what I grew up using. Also the ends are textured. In Spain restaurants give you cheap chopsticks and it's like trying to eat with 2 unsharpened pencils, so I bought a Japanese pair that comes with its own case. Easy to slip in a bag or backpack.
Did ya know ninja use to use stone chop sticks?
They would use them as weapons
LMAO stop.
you half the rub the cheapo ones together to stop from getting a splinter in your lip.
Some Japanese chopsticks have textured ends, but it's not really typical, the "classic" Japanese chopstick is made from lacquered wood along its whole length, which is pretty slippery.
I like Japanese chopsticks because their light weight and greater taper make them feel much more "manoeuvrable"....
Edgy Koala The cheap ones we get here are painted, smooth, round and very thick, like trying to eat with half-inch dowel rods or a pair of unsharpened pencils.
He didn't use the traditional Korean chopsticks. The traditional ones are made solid metal, but the one he used is hollow. The solid ones are much heavier and hard to eat.
wait, do you eat your chopsticks?
for me, even the hollow metal one is hard to eat
i can agree to that, metal solid chopsticks are definitely hard to eat.. that's why i don't eat chopsticks

Korean traditional chopsticks are flat and slightly heavy so it's kinda hard using it.
not really

Korean Chopsticks are king!
- Dishwasher safe for better hygiene
- Won't warp when you wash them
- Environmentally friendly
- Sturdier construction means they won't break if you're doing the traditional thing of "cutting" your food with them instead of a knife
- They generally have notches at the ends to provide better grip
I have massive Nordic hands and Chinese chopsticks just fit better.
0:56 Chinese ”chopsticks” much longer than korean and japanese “chopsticks” ~~~~u know what i mean~~larger~~
Timothy Page I have tiny hands, so Japanese chopsticks work better for me tbh
Generally, you only need the chopsticks to be twice the size of your index finger to find the same level of comfort. Prior to that, it's a problem of getting used to and developing the technique, although it's generally said that it's easier to start with ones which fit the size of your hands better.
What I find interesting is that each cuisine tends to be designed and shaped around their respective pair of chopsticks.
I use any chopsticks possible.
...and Chinese chopsticks go very well alongside of our drinking horns... :) skål!
I personally love the Korean style. I love how easy they are to clean and I keep a set in my lunch box at all times.
Are their differences in how each hold the chopsticks?
I prefer the Japanese chop sticks. The Chinese ones are too big for my hands, and the Korean ones are too heavy for me.
Exactly, Korean ones are nice but heavier, I dislike the Chinese chopsticks the most, they are hard to eat with very long yes it reaches far, but it doesn't help pick up more food, they should be like Japanese cooking chopsticks long but pointy
(almost all my Korean chopsticks are wooden....) If the steel ones are too heavy, try using hollow Korean chopsticks ; they are much better in my opinion
Weeb
+Victoria Phinizy how do you keep hollow chopsticks clean? sounds like I might want to try them but afraid of germs.

I don't really like the flat Korean chopsticks. They are hard to grip since you are only gripping on 2 of the sides (either the flat sides or the thin sides). Chinese and Japanese chopsticks are better since you have equal proportions on all 4 sides. That's my opinion. But, the metal chopsticks are easier to clean/wash tho. Washing chopsticks can be a nightmare lol
edit: after holding the Korean chopsticks your hand would get very tired
Tippity Toppity If you can use chopsticks well, Korean chopsticks would be easy.
Jason Huang
I assume They're only hard to use because you don't/ aren't used to using them.
He didn't mention that Korean chopsticks are usually flat! As a Chinese the initial usage took some time to get used to with every meal when I was there. You get used to it but it does throw you off guard. I guess I'm used to Chinese ones as I hold them quite high up so I feel my hands are very close to my food with JP ones haha
Those chopsticks that were on the vis are home chopsticks in korea.
As a Korean, I don't like the flat Korean chopsticks because they're so hard to use. Prefer Japanese and Chinese ones. At least Koreans use spoons to eat their rice though. Good idea.
K Hwang I am curious about it. Why are flat? Maybe it helps something?
I learned how to use chopsticks in 1976 during my first tour in Korea. I got to where I could pick up a grain of rice off the side of a bowl. Yes, I still eat with them. I just hate when people stare while I'm eating.

Ah yes, my favourite kind of chopsticks, ODM Gear Titan Slaying swords
Yessss
I prefer Korean chopsticks.
BECAUSE u like kpop , not the real like korean chopsticks ,
Because? You have a cultural bias? If that's the case, then your opinion is pretty irrelevant.
Why would anyone complain about her personal taste?
Maybe she's just used to use korean chopsticks.
I prefer Korean chopsticks because that's what I've used the majority of my life and it's my personal preference. It has nothing to do with anything else. So the assumption of cultural bias and kpop is irrelevant.
Why do people always assume people like Korean stuff because they like kpop, smh.
3:07 attack on titan blades?
sOMEONE NOTICED AS WELL
Duelmaster _111 omg yes attack on titans blade. # lol
I NEED those
Is_sac 255
They look lame cos they taper. They, at least, need the diagonal indentations along the blades.
Is_sac 255 they come with ODM gear holders but there pretty expensive
I'm Korean so I use metal chopsticks, but the metal chopsticks I like to use are the flat ones.
Elyse Rho; I'm not Korean, but I have a pair of the flat ones too.
a b I don't really know to be honest, but I happen to think that the flat chopsticks are easier to use.
Wait, there are flat Korean chopsticks? The only ones I have seen are round metal chopsticks where just about everything slips off them and are really hard to use.
I find the flat metal chopsticks to have better grip, but my hand gets tired and sometimes sore during prolonged use. Wooden chopsticks are still my favorite!
ChaosPod tell me about it... I love Korean food and regularly go, but eating with Korean chopsticks is hard... I usually take wooden chopsticks with me since it's much easier to eat with... and this girl doesn't want to starve.
I love Korean chopsticks
Same
2:19 Koreans are smart.
and other things as well...
can you catch a mosquito with them?
Well this really depends on the person. Obviously if you're eating soup then you will use spoon but i like to use chopsticks for rice.
In Florida, use the chinese - they are longer, and so are the misqueetoes
riner9 yeah we are 😂
Preferably Japanese chopsticks since they're wide and at the top they're really thin it's easier
Meanwhile Chinese chopsticks are the same width from top to bottom hard
And the Korean ones are just slippery lol
Also I use that weird spin technique for noodles lol
Also I'm just fantastic at using chopsticks 😏
「•Whimsical • Phoenix•」 I don't think korean chopsticks are slippery? Wouldn't plastic chopsticks be slippery too? Maybe it's because i've used korean chopsticks my whole life but i've tried other chopsticks too and it's not like one is harder than the other. Justmy opinion. ヾ(´▽`;)ゝ
이지우 oh lol usually Japanese chopsticks are wooden 😆 also either I'm just really bad at using Korean chopsticks or maybe it's bc they're usually made of steel (I think) and my hand just can't adjust easily 😕
Chinese chopsticks are not same width top to bottom
I prefer Japanese too. And I’m also skilled at using chopsticks.
「•Whimsical • Phoenix•」 this how you know that your Japanese

The perfume names cracked me up.
Really enjoy your videos, Mike!
Chanel fried rice... I would like that.
I'd buy that.

I love Korean chopsticks overall , Japanese second favorite.
Is it because of the use, or the looks?
@@paqua13yearsago6 i find them very nice visually, simplistic and clean, i also like the feeling of weighty utensils.
I like the chinese version better
@@Kim_Minna7 wtf just because someone likes Korean chopstick doesn't mean they like kpop. Don't assume things about people unless you want to get corrected.
Well, I'm Texan and I ate my entire Thanksgiving dinner with just chopsticks. I know I'm weird. XD
xD Nope. I've never owned a gun. But your comment is hilarious and would make sense for other Texans I know. Although, I doubt I'd find another Texan eating their Thanksgiving dinner with chopsticks.
+NanashiTreeHouse I just mentally bow to you. LOL!!!
LOL that's hilarious
I use all kinds of chopsticks, favorite is the Korean type :)
LittleMissSkyCarson same XDDD
you get used to the slipperiness and heaviness of korean chopstick
Do you use metal ones?
Same
They’re the most hygienic and last the longest which is definitely a plus
I like Korean chopsticks the most, I'm very comfortable with them and I love the long-handled spoon. I use that spoon to eat everything now even after I lost the chopsticks. Now I have to find a store in my area that sells them. The last city I lived in had a lot more Koreans. This city has a lot more Vietnamese.
Regarding 3:03, there are special chopsticks designed to be compact and portable. They are two piece chopsticks that have an upper half that screws together to its lower half. They resemble a two-piece cue stick used for billiards or pool.
why am I here? I am Indian...
maybe because I am just curious
Welcom to asia the far east of asia

For years I've been using the "traditional" Chinese plastic chopsticks, for both cooking and eating. Not too long ago I picked up a pack of stainless steel chopsticks (Korean style, but made in Taiwan, that I bought at 99 Ranch Market) that I use only for eating. (But I still use the plastic ones for cooking, checking if mian is done, etc., as they seem to have a better grip--and of course there is zero heat transfer, as opposed to the metal chopsticks.)
I am always a bit leery about "reusable" wooden chopsticks at restaurants. I think these are made from bamboo, not sure, but I am never convinced they can be cleaned 100%.
Oh and of course, I need to mention: throwaway wooden chopsticks! These seem to come in two varieties: one that is very well finished, smooth and rounded; and the other--with which we are all familiar!--that looks like a miniature 2x4 with a slit in it, guaranteed to give your mouth a terminal case of splinters, aiyahhh.
I cannot eat Asian noodles without chopsticks...and my favorite comfort food/snack is a bowl of peanuts with chili sauce--and how can you eat this without chopsticks?
And by the way, it is not difficult to learn how to use chopsticks...several days' starvation will ease and accelerate the learning process...! :)
I've never gotten splinters from the throwaways. Just scrape the end lengths together vigorously. That's what everyone does.
I learned to eat with three chopsticks. Better for rice, almost acts like a fork.
My family is Korean so I end up using Korean chopsticks a lot more when we're trying to be traditional or trying to impress white people but usually my family will go to Asian food restaurants and keep the disposable chopsticks that they give us
Peaceful Warrior are ur family from north korea?
Lord Ives bro they can't use the internet in North Korea. So no. Definitely not.
Michael Archer Oh true. Idk what he means haha
Lol "impress white ppl". Like white ppl even know the difference! 😂
Should have added chopstick etiquette in your video as well, I think it is important!
he has a video on it already i dont remember if its on this channel but its with his friend its very funny and informative.
I learned with Chinese chopsticks at a Chinese restaurant, but adjusted to Japanese chopsticks when I visited and came home with a pair or two. While in Japan, my host family pointed out how I hold my chopsticks quite far near the top end, I said I just wasn't used to Japanese chopsticks being much shorter. Ironically, now we have Korean chopsticks at home, but that's literally just because steel is much easier to wash and the kids can't break them by slamming them on the table when they don't like dinner.
Wow and when I started on this chrome tab........I was watching Batman Beyond clips
RUclips has been pushing this style of viewing a lot lately, because the most money they make is when people stick on the site. Rather than watching any particular creator.
Quality Content!!!! Every channel should have chopstick videos!!
It's funny how you stress the CHOP in Chopsticks every time
I like all of them but the Japanese ones fits me the most. As Mike said, really easy to pick up small pieces!
