- Hope you enjoy this quick video of our Valencia Pride Mango tree at the end of July 2017. This tree was the first mango tree we planted in our yard in December 2011. It was planted before our fixer upper even had a kitchen. The tree has been a very reliable producer of delicious fruit. It is a very vigorous grower, but has been maintained at a height where all fruit can still be picked by hand.
Sulcata Grove is our 2 acre, backyard food forest. We grow over 60 varieties of bananas along with over 150 other fruit trees. Our videos are family friendly.

Planted my first mango tree last year. Bad thing is I rent. My landlord didn't mind. Bad thing is, I may never get to taste her fruit. He name is Molly. She is so loved. ❤
Just did a Google search of when to pick my BP mango and was enjoying your video when I looked and saw it was Sulcata Grove, where I purchased my VP mango tree! Thanks ya’ll! I have three beauties in the tree and want to beat the squirrels to the fruit eating!!!
Pick them when you see the first bit of yellow at all and then ripen them on the counter. Taste just as good. Beats alot of the animals. I have to do that with my tomatoes also. As soon as I see red on them I pick and they are as good as the vine ripened ones.

Thanks for this! Didn't know I could prune heavily without shocking the tree. Mine is super tall and had fruit first time this year.
Just be sure to paint any wood without leaf shade with diluted white latex paint to prevent sunburn/cracking.

They were tearing down a house and clearing the land that had a large valencia pride mango tree on and was told I could pick what I wanted and all were green with some having a little bit of yellow and let them ripen on the counter and they were as good as tree ripened which I was surprised. Made me buy a valencia pride this year and still have it in a pot. Do you remember how long it took for it to get its first mangos when you planted it? Mine is 32 inches high only and grafted. Thanks for posting a video of yours. Looks really nice and healthy.
VP grows fast. I think ours fruited within a year of planting. We purchased it as a 3g and had it in an apartment for 6 months - then got this property and planted it.
@@SulcataGrove Wow good to hear. Mine also came in a 3 gallon pot but I put it in a 7 gallon till spring. It got a big bud a couple of weeks ago and it branch out close to a foot in that short time. Thanks for the info. Looking forward to spring.

WOW she's really productive for that size tree. I heard they can grow huge. I hope they take well to pruning & still produce fruit & not flushing wid leaves cuz I have a small yard.
We prune ours heavily - more heavily each year. It’s still around 8’ - 11 years after planting.

@@geriannroth449 just keep up with it each year as soon as you can - right after it’s done fruiting or earlier in the summer if no fruit on a branch. I think I have a video up about Craig doing a major pruning last year.

My neighbors see the red and think that the mangoes need to be picked asap. I wish that I could let them ripen properly on the tree, but I'm afraid that the neighbors will take all of them at once.

You’re cutting off the foliage that will produce energies and sugars that go towards producing better tasting fruit.
I’ve heard folks says always wait till you last fruits off. One guy told me, to him, the last one almost always tastes the best b/c it gets all the sugars it needs. 😊

Curious how many yrs planted and approx yield per tree?
Mine is very lightly branched maybe 5 yrs old and we harvested about 8-10 ….coyotes also helped themselves on lower branches…
We planted our Valencia Pride in 2011. We haven’t had coyotes since we stopped growing and composting watermelons. Not sure if you grow those, but for some reason, they attract coyotes, at least in Florida. Raccoons and possums are an issue though for us at night.
@@SulcataGrove that’s funny if your a bystander….but if you watch their behavior…you want to cull their numbers….we had one great yr for yellow watermelons….and disasters since….I thought it was crows eating undeveloped melons…but sure could have been cayotes….I’m planning to expand VP by stumping other non producers….trees are a fortune now. One frost I lost 25 trees that were $100-130 each about 6 yrs ago..ochhh….so it’s poly seed types from now on.
@@offgridmangogrower so sad to lose trees. Prices on mango trees have dropped a lot in Florida for most varieties recently.
what's your opinion on Wich is better Valencia pride vs Glenn? Both taste and growth? Thanks
Glenn - it is an earlier fruit in the season and a less aggressive grower.
@@SulcataGrove thank you I bought an Alphonso tree really for the hipe of it being one of the better mangoes but also want a normal real good mango tree eventually I'll have more verities. Thank you

Question; when should I expect the flowering to start on a Valencia Mango tree in central Florida??
We are three miles from the coast in Sarasota. Our tree normally flowers in January or February if I remember correctly.

@@728sandycc I give our trees potassium, epsom salt, calcium, and a little boron each year.

@@728sandycc after they are done fruiting to replenish the soil, but sometimes other times of year too.
How old is that tree
This was the first tree we planted after moving here. It was put in the ground just over 5 years prior to this video. Craig removes about 30% of the wood each year. It's a very vigorous grower.

is this tree from seed or grafted?
Ryan Angelo Alora All of our mango trees are grafted. We planted them all as 3gal grafted trees
A seedling tree will make a better TREE, but probably not better FRUIT. When they talk about a named type of tree (e.g. Valencia Pride) it means that it was grafted and thus a genetic clone of the original seedling that someone named.
