    I am glad that:
    1 - It's not my car
    2 - I didn't do it
    3 - don't have to pay for it
    I hope nobody was hurt in the events leading up to today's instructional video.
    Thanks from Portugal Charles!

      Ujiltrom M wait till you see front wheel drive transmissions, you’ll never look at a transmission mechanic with the same respect again (unless they pull it too, which a lot of specialty shops don’t do)

    • @ryanb.2967
      @ryanb.2967 4 года назад +1

      aterack833 i personaly work a lot on FWD and FWD engines are build different
      First of all they are transversals not longitudinal
      So it’s easier to work when the engine is in, even more since the transmission need to be disconnected with less space
      But when talking about longitudinals engines it’s generally more simple to throw it out in my opinion

      If someone makes an engine autopsy channel of a miss-shift when those believe they wanted to go from third to fourth when they went from third to second when they believe the engine wound to at least 10,000 RPM before self destructing. As the few believe they wanted a diesel dropped off after it ran away when those had to do an autopsy as to what damage the runaway did.

      I ain’t no expert. . . but the ECM should limit the RPM so that an inadvertent shift into a lower gear should not destroy the engine. We didn’t hear what the respective ratios of second and third were in this car. . . My Humble (see what I did there?) opinion. . .

      @@oijhhytdirhrbru It does not matter, tuned, Turbo, NA. This will happen to most engines when going from redline on 3rd gear down to 2nd gear. Rev limiter is only there for top of any given gear, that is software, in this case it's all mechanical.

    • @francoisdvanderwesthuizen
      @francoisdvanderwesthuizen 4 года назад +19

      Because of the red lining in 3rd gear and the speed he was flying in and accidentally forced it into 2nd gear he mechanically overrided all ecm safety measures and it being a mechanical override it is simply impossible for the ecm to react to make things right. When accelerating and you hit the max possible rpm your ecm simply won't allow the engine to turn faster, in case of a downshift from a higher gear at redline rpm into a lower gear the rpm of the engine would be much higher then the ecm or engine can handle...

    I money shifted my MK7 R but luckily I was able to stab the clutch before any damage could occur. It was still a money shift because the dealer had to pull it apart to verify nothing was damaged. Just a couple rocker arms popped off. Everything else survived.
    I put a diesel geek shifter link in it after that and it made a WORLD of difference.

    Seen a few like this, normally get a few / nearly all the valves totaled. Usually missed gear or downshift like yours. One engine was reduced to shrapnel ! I have a friend who works in the VA group who has told me they can see if any re programing has been done even if it was later removed ,with lot of the data stored permenantly. This has shown up when there have been clutch failures due to tuning ,needless to say it voided the warranty. I guess there must be hidden files in the ecu software. A very enjoyable video.. especially watching someone else work.😉

    • @Blazer02LS
      @Blazer02LS 4 года назад

      Yep, most modern cars will show if there has been any tampering with the factory ECM, some of the new ones even record if the ECM has been removed and for how long. That means you go in for a warranty repair and they discover the ECU has been out of the vehicle for XXXX miles and hours and was just replaced, Instant warranty void. Then there are others where you try to do any tuning and it bricks the vehicle.

This VW pivot ball rocker setup is similar to Honda B18/B20 non VTEC valvetrain, and I've heard this tends to happen on them when you start trying to increase the rev limit. Solid pinned rockers or cam on bucket FTW.

    I just realised why this is a common issue people seem to have: Left hand drive! In RH drive, you don't pull the gear stick towards you for second gear, and your left arm is usually weaker. You're more likely to end up in a higher gear when getting spirited in RH drive...
