I used to live in Nagoya at the time that this airport opened. It was pretty exciting. They purposely built an island in the bay south of Nagoya for it. The old airport was a little north of Nagoya in Komaki (Kasugai), and was much smaller, but a little more convenient location-wise. Anyway, it was big news when this airport opened. People would go there just to see it, not to actually fly anywhere. Lots of nice shops, restaurants, and apparently even a sento (hot bath).
