What no-one has mentioned is that for years, this movie held the record for most cars destroyed in one movie and even to this day, this scene is one of the most memorable car chase scenes in any movie or video game.
There is a Taiwanese movie maker who has done enormous out-of-this-world car crash scenes. I do not remember which was the first film of his I saw on the Saturday afternoon matinees on VHS, but it was a YUGE scene.
Ever since my dad showed me this movie! This has been my top number one favorite for over 15 years now! Rest in Peace, John Belushi. You were awesome!!
That film speed at 2:25 was not sped up. The Stuntman said in a documentary he was really doing over 110! Can you imagine driving under the EL THAT fast! One of my favorite scenes of the movie.
I love how the laws of physics just get tossed out the garbage randomly, I was laughing so hard when the nazi car starts gaining altitude for no reason
The producers had to get "special permission" from City Hall to go 118 mph under the Wells street Elevated tracks. And the FAA would Never allow a car to be dropped from a cargo chopper like in this movie again.
My interpretation is that it was God that made it possible. Since they were on a “mission from God” some sort of comedic but random divine intervention.
@@585MBA Which is also why all the other random stuff happens, even their car falling apart in the end. They were at their destination and didn't need the car anymore, God was showing that by removing His protection that kept it from falling apart(after all, it looked like it should've fallen apart long ago).
What a great movie ! It was probably one of the funniest movies ever. The number of cars wrecked set a record at that time too. Belushi and Ackroyd made a masterpiece with all the talent they got to participate in the flick. I enjoyed watching a number of clips just now - they had me laughing for about a half hour.
No wonder the Bluesmobile outran all those cars. It had a cop motor cop shocks cop brakes, and it was a model made before catalytic converters, so it runs good on regular gas.
I first saw this movie on Showtime when I was 8 years old. This past weekend at age 51 I finally made it to Chicago and saw many of the landmarks from this movie.

For those watching who know cars, I'm kinda curious; how impressive is it that despite a thrown rod, the Bluesmobile lasted THAT LONG? And realistically, could it have lasted that long, running that hard? (I know its a movie and just fun but I was kinda curious)
No. That's why the scene where it just falls apart works, they were on a mission from god. The blues mobile is blessed/protected until that point. Most jumping stunts would of damaged the suspension components severely, that could render the car undrivable. When "it threw a rod", the engine could have exploded any second more so that it looks the radiator was damage too. Wich means the car would overheat in minutes and cease up at the rpm's it was forced to perform.
@@curierfromxibalba1155 Thanks for clarifying that for me! I've seen a few engines running on idle where a PUSHrod's works its way out from under the lifters and they clatter and wriggle about, but those are a far cry from the speeds Elwood was pulling off and also different kind of rods. (Also I guessed on the jumps and suspension and such, but thats for clarifying those for me too.)
FWIW I had twice driven a car with a thrown rod in the engine (don't judge me lol). I still vividly remember on one of the cars with an LED dashboard that lit up like a Christmas tree. Once it happens, you usually have less than a minute before everything dies.

"I've always loved you." That was the most touching thing to say to someone you've cared for, especially when death is on the line. Hard to believe those were that Nazi's final words before dying.
Proof that the brothers really are on a mission from God. Normally if a car throws a rod, the engine dies right there, that the car was able to make it all the way to where they were going and then completely falls apart could only be divine intervention.

... or how a Ford Pinto is somehow capable of keeping up with Elwood's old cop car with the souped-up cop motor. 😅
Didn’t catch the demise of the Bluesmobile, probably the most heart wrenching part of the movie.
I deeply love the over the top/cartoony tone they gave to this car chase, it makes this sequence H.I.L.A.R.I.O.U.S !
Yet it’s also so serious as well, which adds to the humor. 😂 Classic
3:37-3:43 Props to the 6 pack, untouched by 3 car chase cars.
Fast & Furious could never. REAL cars, REAL driving, no CGI, just skill and guts. The real thing will always beat computerized in my book.
That's right this being a comedy out does Fast and furious with this kind of action
Use of unnecessary violence to apprehend the Blues Brothers has been approved.
Adding Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries really was as momental as the Luger pistol. One of the best comedies ever.
