You are trying to become the catalyst #anupama to polarize the industry. Left always does it, only if I bad mouth BJP I will be hero in ur elite class.

11years before Sairat a quiet tamil film called "Kaadhal" (Love) had come with which Sairat finds similarities.
Produced by the guy who made Robot and 2.0, it ushered a new wave in Tamil cinema.
A rich liquor store owner's high school daughter falls for a mechanic, elope from the town of Madurai to the city of Chennai and the ugly head of caste wakens back home.
Gut wrenching and real, it was a sleeper hit, for the first time using gritty film making techniques and achieving cult box office status without being masala.
      Do look for it.

@@bhushansurya7821 Been seeing this for quite a while now so just a thought my friend. Remember we had that marathi saying in school textbooks - 'hota jeeva mhanun vachla shiva'. Did we get up and correct our teachers to change that to 'Chatrapati shivaji maharaj'? I don't remember anybody taking any offence in that sentence. And I think that's because he wasn't just a king we respected, but the king we truly loved. Many literatures call him a variety of names, shiva, shivraya, shivaji, shivba, shivaji Raja, raja shivchatrapti, chatrapati shivaji and countles others.. Calling him by his first name, shiva, sometimes feels even more personal and loving than Chatrapati shivaji maharaj or chatrapati shivaji raje bhonsale etc etc. These are notions propelled by political parties by asking people to address him a certain way. Wasnt the case before 2010 atleast when we had chatrapti shivaji terminus CST for many years and no one had a problem with that. If politicians really had respect, they would govern the way he used to, rather than just calling his name a certain way! Even when your read many many acclaimed and praised literatures on him written by legends like babasaheb purandare and ranjit desai, at one point they all address him by words like 'Jijau cha shivba' etc. And I feel that infact brings us closer to the king. There have been so many kings in history, but its only our beloved king shivaji whom we feel more personal too.

While watching this, can't help but think of Kamal Haasan who had every mob threatening him in the past for different films. The Muslims (for Vishwaroopam), the Hindus (for Hey Ram), the casteist mobs from rural Tamil Nadu (films like Thevar Magan, Virumandi). And the biggest of them all, the political parties. Yet he had the conviction and acumen to boldly use his craft to expose different harsh realities that the society is plagued with. He will never shy away in doing this.
Importantly he financed himself. He has equally churned out mainstream films loaded with cheese to earn and feed the film star in him , who in turn finances the bold filmmaker in him. Somewhere in this video I was waiting for his reference because nobody else in this country would have faced bans, court cases, religious heat, hatred from political parties as much as he did.
Somewhere he became the seeds for change these filmmakers were talking about in this show.
    Btw excellent discussion FC.
P.s. Also I was waiting for pariyerum perumal referred somewhere. A movie everyone should watch.

He acts, he dance, he writes and also he directs as well as produce movies.

I agree to your point and also not agree to some of it.. the reason why there is no reference because the films these filmmakers made are good films not pathbreaking films like kamalhasan's.. secondly most of the questions directed towards the current situation n current political climate that is why there is no reference..
if kamalhasan had been an arthouse filmmaker like shyam benegal none of his films would have run into trouble.. as per his own confession kamalhasan hates the word art films.. he always wanted to be a mainstream filmmaker where he pushed the people's tastes.. good that he ran into these problems we got the true nature of the society n political background of our country.

I can certainly see the discomfort in Dibakar Banerjee and Anubhav Sinha after Nagraj Manjule discusses the irrelevance of "change in jailor" for him and the Dalit and other such marginalised communities. When Nandita says "it's an upper CASTE discourse" following Dibakar's statement of putting left-wing and right-wing as a colonial discourse, Dibakar rushes to interfere saying, "Upper Elite, upper elite, yea". And then Anubhav adds, "after a point, it's not about upper caste, it's about privilege," to which he gets Dibakar's thumbs up. Nandita intervenes to clarify that, "caste and class overlap also," just to find herself quickly dismissed (wrongly) by Anubhav, "the time you join privilege class, nobody asks for your caste." Oh dear, CASTE is alive and kicking, and these two (UC?) folks need to get educated sooner than later on caste(ism). Sadly, story-screenplay-writing-producing-directing Article 15 could not educate Anubhav Sinha on how caste operates in India. Maybe they both should have heard Nagraj, Nandita and Vetri more, and spoken less. Anyway, thanks so much Anupama for this excellent ADDA, which in itself speaks volumes about how much more education, film-making, and change is needed on the issue of caste in India NOT by those who see film-making on caste as a profession, but by those who have lived experiences of casteism. Hats off to you and the FC team for at least giving visibility to what has perhaps always been invisibilized. Just to add, Nagraj, Nandita and Vetri do need to have a separate interview of their own for sure, which is also demanded by your followers reflected very well in the comments section.

Thank you Anupama for this. I want to address Nandita and Anubhav over the thing that they said about caste and class overlap. Being myself a tanner (chamar) I assure you that social mobility is not a subset of economic capital. Capital doesn't alone drive social mobility. Cultural capital (ie Bhrahminical culture) might do that to a very little extent. I can substantiate that with tens of personal life experiences. Having grown up in urban landscape in a lower middle class family, my experiences with caste are just the same as Nagraj has put up into this conversation. The immediate problem for us is not Godzila itself. My whole life has been defined by my caste up until now, from siblings, to kinship, to marriage to family friends to even friends. It panders from your kitchen to university campuses. The understanding of caste system can't be derived from immediate discrimination of things like not allowing to draw water from well but it is about the whole system and how it is pushing particular caste in particular direction. It is about representation. Think about it, does it makes sense that 88% male parliamentarians are making legislations for a society where 50% are women ?? Does it make sense that more than 50% Judges in Supreme court are just Bhramins (not even other caste from savarna) those have been given responsibility to uphold the Constitution ?? Is there fundamentally anything wrong with women and lower caste people to make up to the courts or parliament ? No !!!! This is the system that I am talking about.

@Bloater 46 Go ahead. I can write about reservation all day. I must ask you to read various studies done regarding reservation and how it has succeeded in many of its aims despite being not implemented properly. Take Nepal for study which has similar social structure (caste hierarchy) and there is no reservation. Studies have shown that their inequality gap has only increased. And take States like Tamil Nadu where it is believed that reservation is implemented better than other states has shown decrease in inequality and in Kerela also.
There is so much anger and misinformation professed regarding reservation in the country that people taking its benefit are made to feel like shit. Do you EWS category students will have to face such things as well ?? Let's see how much job does reservation actually covers ???
Only 8% jobs are under organized sector, of which only 3% is government owned, of which only 1% is available for direct recruitment (2% is under promotion, where there is no reservation) , of which 0.5% seats are reserved, of which only 0.25% seats are properly filled. This 0.25% population is reserved for 80% (ST, SC, OBC) of India. In other words such small number of jobs are reserved coveres almost all of the India still there is no much fuss about it. This tiny fraction of reservation for huge population has helped many people to come and be a part of public parks and play with their children along with others and have broken stereotypes...
