In one of Cornette's podcast episode when he buried Tim Horner, Corny said he had to pay guys out of his pocket because SMW was starting to slow down & Rubin had backed away from the product then
@@DanaHoltzbert The part when he talked about Horner's wife screaming at him with the baby in her arms in front of the guys was something. When she done that, Horner's time at SMW was over
he wanted to pay the guys that lived in another city and pay horner the next day when the bank opened but horners wife told horner he had to have the money that night. So cornette had to pay him out of his pocket.
The Ron Wright angle in the wheelchair back then was Gold. The Gangstas too. Dutch with the cue cards as an announcer to open the show......good stuff. Had to edit, I forgot.....bring back Thunderfoot!
Tracy Smothers vs Dirty White Boy was amazing. I also loved Brad Armstrong’s run in Smoky Mountain and the Armstrong family vs Cornette’s gang of villains. And Buddy Landell had a good last run as champ in his prime.
I believe Cornette paid wrestlers out of his own pocket at the end, because he didn’t want to screw any of the boys over. When the sale of SMW went through, he essentially broke even after paying out those he owed any money to. Say what you will about Corny, but he wasn’t going to owe anyone money.
He repeatedly did it in ROH because Greg the Office Boy kept leaving with the money before the show was over. It's what led to Jim quitting ROH in 2012.
if I correctly remember the story on how cornet and Ruben met and this is from a cornet himself Reuben came to the Omni in Atlanta one day for an nwa show and Ruben's two favorite wrestlers was cornet and Flair
Yes Sir the very same. He is a music producing legend that I believe started Def Jam Records with Russell Simmons back in his NYU days. He produced across all genres of music from country to the Beastie Boys and Jay Z.
For anyone who isn't familiar with Rick Rubin, he founded Def Jam Records with Russell Simmons and went on to produce some of the biggest albums in music history from numerous genres. It would be like having Steven Spielberg as a backer for your wrestling promotion.
Cornette knows what it's like to get stiffed in pay, that's why he always paid. Hell, he even paid out the ROH talent out of his own pocket when "Greg the office boy" would leave the house shows and TV tapings with the money before the show ended.
Cornette had said that SMW went out not owing anything, outside of maybe a tv station or production company and big amounts. Of course, he's a biased source. Outside of you saying Tommy Rich, i dont recall any wrestlers saying Cornette owed them.
I’ll give James a lot of credit. I wasn’t alive for a lot of Dutch’s career. However, this podcast has me really interested in about the different territories and federations of the old days!
Jimmy is the greatest wrasslin fan, he was trying to be Tony Khan before Tony Khan. If only he had bigger pockets to scoop up some of his fave wrasslers. That no good Vince McMahon destroyed the market.
It wasn't Tommy Rich that had the bell I forget who it was but it wasn't Tommy Rich for some reason I'm thinking it was Tim Horner that pulled that shit but definitely not Tommy Rich
Horner had to turn over the belt (an angle) that he won unfairly - he showed up in the ring with a diabled child holding the belt, Bob Armstrong had to take the belt, Armstrong was not happy about it. Cornette wanted to pay the guys that lived out of town and pay horner the next day when the bank was open, horners wife told him he had to get paid that night so cornette had to pay him out of pocket. - I dont remember T Rich ever doing much in SMW.
Jim Cornette does not seem like the type to stiff wrestlers I don’t always agree with his opinions but he seems like a straight up guy
You'll get paid so long as you stiff his wife!
@@Ohionortheast Commie Cornette is well known for stiffing his own mother. He will stiff anyone.
Same. He’s a typical crazy leftie, but i think he has the pride to pay the guys before he makes a penny
Thank u
I've never heard a wrestler say he didn't get paid.

His rant on Tim Horner is legendary.

Jim mentioned an international sale of SMW footage after the company was done helped him break even.

Jim strikes me as a stand up guy, he has morals.
The same Rick Rubin that produced Johnny Cash's last albums.
Yes. He was the money man behind SMW

From Spielberg to Weinstein by going to +20 years of Diddy parties lol
I was wondering if that was the same guy.
It was his momma's money. Sheesh. Everybody knows momma was rich.
So was his father.
Lmao you to much mid south
Yeah mommies little nerd
Rick Ruben did a interview with Jericho a few years ago and he talked about Smoky Mountain and how he became involved in it

Now I want to know the story James!
Well hey if it's ever the only piece of real estate he owns someday maybe we'll hear it
Awesome shirt James.
Corny said one of the reasons he took the WWF gig was to payback the people that he owed from SMW. And he said it took him a long time.
Rubin pulled out at some point at the end Jim was flipping the whole bill
I heard it was only 20-30 thousand in the hole
I think cornette said he got his money back so implies he didnt lose out but didnt make millions either
Now you need to tell the story
Jimmy is the greatest wrasslin fan, he was trying to be Tony Khan before Tony Khan. If only he had bigger pockets to scoop up some of his fave wrasslers. That no good Vince McMahon destroyed the market.
A few guys got stiffed by the defunct Florida Championship Wresting when it went broke and Eddie Graham committed suicide.
Tell the story!!
Ask Dutch about MECW based out of Nashville, Tn from ‘98-‘00.
Main Event Championship
😂 dang it know I really want to know the story
I thought Rick Rubin was a music producer
He was but he was the backer and money man behind the scenes
Cornette has gloated that when SMW ended he owed nothing to talent unlike Heyman.
Not with Rick Rubin funding SMW he didn't
I have a question for Dutch .Did they really win a million dollars for winning the crocket cup?
Corny had to file for bankruptcy because of the collapse of SMW.
Stay humble, James Also that Tommy Rich reach was super weak and unnecessary.
😂😂😂
NEXT WEEK
🧔🏼: "......I met Rick Rubin ONE time.☝️"
THE WEEK AFTER THAT
🧔🏼: "Yeah, I met... that guy once or twice."
Gnostic dutch = accepts Americanism
Catholic James = doesnt accept reprobates
