  • An Xmas Special riotous return from old pal of the pod Danny Baker as ever "giving off sparks" and remembering Slade-filled pub crawls down Long Lane, the glorious smell of Beano albums, Chris Rea and the exploding rat in the microwave, Val Doonican, Leon Redbone, a PG Wodehouse record, games of Mousetrap, Xmas presents that went wrong, how "nothing makes you feel more like James Robertson Justice than a drop of Remy Martin on Xmas morning" and ... the Greatest Christmas Record ever made.

    When you get Mr Hepworth and Mr Ellen talking together about anything and everything it's like that feeling you get when you've had a shit day at work and your sick of your life but you run a hot bath with some radox, you lock the door and put some music on and you just chill out and the cares of the world drift away. Now when you add Mr Baker into the mix it's the same feeling but after the bath the wife makes you a drink, gets your slippers and you crash out in front of the box with a favourite film and some chocolate. Life doesn't get much better than these three. Thank you Gentlemen for everything you do, it is very much appreciated. stay safe and have a lovely christmas all of you.

    Danny Baker: who forced me to stop running on my pre-marathon training many moons ago; talking radio-wise (on what must've been GLR then) about school caretakers opening tall windows with long poles... I was doubled up on Trinity Road (not a million miles from Wandsworth nick) with giggles. Hope you're keeping well, Dan.

    slade's old tune went 'won't you buy me a looking glass, to watch the world go by.[lalalalaala] look me in the eye-eye-eye'. ok we may not manage massive parties together, but Noddy wrote the song to try and relieve the drudge and hardship and misery of the 3-day week, power cuts etc. he just spooled together all the traditional memories of Christmas so that everyone could forget about all the real pish in the world at the time and just have as much of a time as they could

    • @keef71
      @keef71 3 года назад

      Actually looked it up, song was 'Buy me a Looking Glass' in 1967 (when they were still the " 'N Betweens") and the chorus was "Buy me a rocking chair to watch the world go by, buy me a looking glass, I'll look you in the eye". Jim Lea liked the tune but thought the words were naff. In 1973 he remembered the chorus, came up with the opening words and suggested to Noddy that it could be the Christmas tune that Chas Chandler had been at them to write.

    I heard the Beatles Xmas records first on a BBC Radio 1 special in 1979(?) with Andy Peebles (I think) and as Danny said the 1966 one is fantastic. "The boys arrive at BBC House.." and say to the guard ."We have permission o wise one"
    And then there's an early one where the Lennon subs in some German slang "Beatles peetles" instead of "Beatles people".
    They still looked after their fan club despite them falling apart towards the end

    Lad's,. This deserves cigars all round.It's is up there with the Beano, Eagle and Rubert Bear annuals. Did Pete and Dud ever do a Christmas song or ditty? 1961 or 1962 Christmas T.V. add. Harry Seacome dressed as a school boy with cap, up in his bedroom. Downstairs mum put's on a winter coat ties a scarf over her head picks up a large carry bag and handbag. Yell's up the stairs she off to the shops and sets out. Harry picks up a large wooden block from the toy's on the floor. Open's his bedroom window and throws the block which hit's his mum who falls flat onto the pavement. Harry yells out " Don't forget the Fruit Gums, mum." Cheers, Chris Perry.

Actually how about a record reveal like the vinyl community people do? Thanks, Lovely chat with Danny Baker by the way.

    I was a guest on BBC radio Cambs and was asked to bring in some Christmas records/CDs to play.
    Long before it was officially released on the B side , I snuck in a Bootleg CD copy and told the presenter to play track number 6 which he did. Broadcasting the full version of “Christmas time is here again” to all of East Anglia who must have been bemused when listening to an otherwise unknown song by the Beatles.
    However , unbeknown to me at the time there was a policy of the lady at the checkout desk wanting to note down all the tracks and info of what we had played for copywrite purposes and I assume to pay royalties , I couldn’t just hand her a copy of the CD “Yellow Matter Custard” ( or whatever it was titled?) so I distracted her and told her it was Lady Madonna or something or other , she wouldn’t know....
    Small time sticking it to the man.....
