I watched Elvis then The Whale almost back-to-back in February. I ended up watching Elvis 3 times and the Whale once because the movie Elvis had such a big impact on me. The role of Elvis was a much more demanding role both physically and emotionally. Elvis was based on a real-life icon so you couldn't get it wrong. The role Fraiser played was 100% fictional and took place in one room and the character basically sat on the couch the whole time. It wasn't a very demanding role. The two roles don't even come close to comparing in level of commitment or difficulty. Austin Butler's dedication to the role was exceptional. Fraiser did well in his role, but it can't compare. Fraiser got the Oscar because he had the sob story.

I think, in any other year Austin would have been the winner by a mile but Brendan also put in a beautiful performance, and Hollywood was feeling a lot of guilt around Brendan's past treatment by the industry. There was so much love for Brendan that year that it seemed inevitable.
I believe that Austin will have many more shots at an Oscar, he's at the front end of what I see being a long and exciting career. He absolutely deserved an Oscar. It was not only one of the best performances of that year but, I firmly feel it belongs on the list of greatest EVER screen performances along with Brando and DeNiro.
The subtleties in the performance and the level of observation were incredible but he never resorted to doing an impression of Elvis by doing the obvious and imitating his pout and sneer, he embodied Elvis and brought through his spirit. I still have trouble telling apart clips of them because Austin feels so much like Elvis in every moment, it's strange, it's like you can actually see the thoughts and memories of Elvis behind his eyes!

YES. Austin was robbed. But not only him, also Catherine Martin. And Baz Luhrmann should have been at least nominated. But I don't care about the Oscars anymore.

huge fan of Austin, but you said it yourself: he came second to an unbelievable performance of Brendan Fraser that year. so saying he was robbed is a bit of a contradiction. Either he came second, or he was robbed, what is it? also, most of what you are mentioning are a) things any decent actor does to prepare for a big role and b) has nothing to do with whether the actual performance is better than all the others.

      1. Obviously, because it's any actor's job
      2. Of course, but it still impressive to be in top 5 nominees for a best actor of the year. It's says something about the actor.
So bad, this comment feels a bit sour.
Honestly, choosing someone's performance as best is very ungrateful job, but that's a nature of the topic that this video is digging.

@@littlekermit5025 yes it's hugely impressive, absolutely love Austin in Elvis. but when you make a video about someone being robbed of an Oscar I think you should make a better case for it, and actually talk about how the performance was better than the other nominees. the only thing mentioned is that Frasers performance was unbelievably good

@@emilrobyn4216 I have my own videos on my channel. I see your point, but I don't think someone saying it was close means someone wasn't robbed. It just means that those who voted for or against in order to keep it close were involved in the robbery. In boxing matches, when one fighter is clearly better, the scorecards can be close but shouldn't have been. The should have been winner was still robbed of his rightful victory. Usually, it's because the other fighter was more well liked, or was the current champ, things that have nothing to do with the actual fight, but they sway the judges.

😂 He didn't deserve to win, but he won all over the world except in the Pay Your Dues Hollywood SAG and Oscars. They release a lot of anonymous Oscar ballots and inside info polling. The amount of people who actually said they'd vote for Austin Butler, but he's young and will have more chances, or they voted for Brendan Fraser because of what he's been through, or both, was ridiculous. By saying he was just okay, it confirms you didn't see the movie. It created millions of new Elvis fans around the world and all over social media because he made Elvis accessible and a real person in his private moments and not just an icon or caricature. He captured his angst, loneliness, sadness, joy, and anger. Add the 3 decades of different styles of stage performance, singing half of the material, and being a Californian playing a Southerner and having to nail facial expressions, voice cadences, mannerisms, and dance, and it's not even close. It's actually even more laughable, considering that Fraser basically gives the same performance he does in interviews and speeches. Everyone who isn't an Austin or Elvis hater or Fraser fan knows Butler was robbed over his youth and fan girl status, along with Fraser's woe is me narrative
