    This is the tutorial for my ORIGAMI WINTER TREE. I sort of reinvented the wheel with this design. Last year, I was trying to make an origami bonsai tree but all the tutorials I could find used paper mache branches. I wanted mine to be all origami so I started designing branches. What you see in this video is what I came up with. As a matter of fact, the last tree on the right at the end of the video IS the one I folded last year. I decided to do this tutorial after I found it while organizing my origami workspace last weekend. After coming up with a design, I found a few designs using the same origami technique to create branches. I should give a shout out to a model called Tree Of Death by Spliffonaut and Eric Joisel's Ent. You may find it tedious to fold all the pleats to make this model. I like pleating. As a origami designer starting out, a logical place to begin many model ideas is with pleating. My last model, Scalloped Bowl, and my next, Flying Squirrel, use it too. There are many different ways to fold different combinations of branches after you have the 32 x 32 grid folded. Always use an even number of squares when spacing branch points. The more branches you have on each row, the shorter they all are on that row. That makes sense, right? I recommend 6 - 7 points on the bottom row of roots, 5 - 6 points for the lower branches, and 4 - 5 points for the longer upper branches. This makes the base stable and the tree shaped more tree-like. The most important part of this model is probably the shaping. You may spend as much time shaping the branches and roots as you spend pleating. TO SHAPE THE BRANCHES, find the middle space between the flaps of a main branch and press each side to round them. Articulate on the folds that run at odd angles to the branches to give them more character. The main trunk should be divided in half and squished on either side as well to make it rounded. Notice that the bottom set of branches will move away from the top set while you are originally forming all the flaps. The different looking tree in the middle is an example of how differently you can choose to make the branched from the 32 x 32 grid. I believe I started it by folding a valley fold at 5 down, mountain fold at 9 down, valley fold at 14 down, and mountain fold at 18 down. The roots were spaced by 2's and 4's and kind of just squished flat to hold it up. The branches are, I believe, all 4's and 5's. There are an almost infinite number of ways you can fold something plantlike using this technique. I'd love to see a picture of what YOU create. Please visit rickmanorigami and leave me a picture comment of your version of Winter Tree. PLEASE CLICK THE LIKE BUTTON FOR THIS VIDEO if you liked it. Thank you so much, Origami Friends! Now you too can turn paper back in to a tree.

    :D Even early on (before my audio would sync with my video and I decided to leave out the sound) I wanted to add humor to my videos. I have a fun personality. I used to be a theater student in college. Having my own RUclips channel allows me to cut loose and be goofy like that. Sometimes I think, "Oh, Tim, leave out all the silliness. People just want to see the origami." But, I think that's what makes my channel different. It's entertaining even if you aren't going to fold the model. *Bazinga!*

    Great question, WiredSnail01. Yes, Winter Tree is my design. I came up with the technique without looking at anyone else's instructions. Afterwards, I did find other similar models. spliffonaut has a video for a very similar model called Tree Of Death but does not credit any designer. Under copyrite laws for origami I can claim this as my design. If anyone thinks I am infringing on their copyrite I'm happy to discuss it. Thanks for the question and the complement :D

  • @RickmanOrigami

    Double layers. In this example, the roots and trunk are double layered and the top and bottom set of branches are single layered. At the end, you can see a tree that looks "fuller" in the middle. In that example, the roots are single layered and each set of branches is double layered. This tutorial is about a means to make multi branched trees but not really about a specific model. Of course, I had to choose one arrangement to show the technique. Fold it any way you like :) Thanks, Anthony Tran!

    • @RickmanOrigami
      @RickmanOrigami  5 лет назад +1

      The trees at the end of the video? Yeah. I used box pleating to create them all. The arrangement of flaps is different in each though. The tall one is from a larger piece of paper with a wide river separating the branches and roots. The more full tree has, I believe, three rows of branches but they are shorter and all about the same length.

      You're welcome. I think it's very important to respond to comments and I'm super appreciative when anyone wants to ask questions about my art. To answer your question. I have a four year old and a very demanding job. As far as origami, I try as hard as I possibly can to 1. Have my art in some kind of exhibit at least once a year 2. Go to and participate in one origami convention at least every two years 3. Produce one origami video of an original design every six months. While I've proudly been able to keep up with the first two, my video tutorials have suffered. I promise, I intend to create new videos. I swore to my fans the next video I produce will be a full tutorial on my Jabberwock model, which has proven to be an extremely difficult task for me when balanced with my every day life. I will eventually accomplish this goal and I believe there will be many more video tutorials of mine to follow. I really appreciate my fans. Stay subscribed. I will make more tutorials. It's just been difficult to maintain my schedule but I believe I will be back at it again in the future. Thanks for your questions.

      No, Olivia Liau. That was only a joke. My Venus Flytrap model is 64 x 64 but the Tree is only 32 by 32. You could apply the same concept to a 64 x 64 grid, or a 100 x 100 grid for that matter, but then too much paper gets bunched up in the pleats and you wouldn't be able to shape the branches.
