Just a reminder that, after the battle where Russian forces pushed ISIS out of Palmyra/Tadmur, Russians lost the city again to ISIS... twice. This included having an entire Spetsnaz team wiped out within 20 minutes of arrival by helicopter. Nothing but vainglory on Russia's part, merely going after Palmyra for PR points, the city having no real strategic value in the fight against ISIS. Russia's only reason for capturing the city, was due to Palmyra's high profile in the news, which would falsely portray them as leading the fight against ISIS. In reality, they never bothered reinforcing the area, hence why they ended up being defeated twice more by a terrorist group that didn't even have any airpower.

I don't recall any Russian involvement in the Palmyra battles, other than perhaps bombing by aircraft. Any ground forces are likely to have been Iraqi PMF. The Syrian Arab Army aren''t an effective force unfortunately. What's the basis of your comment?

@@cliffordwebb3656Besides Russian MoD claims, Russian news outlets trumpeting the "victory," the Russian Military Orchestra's performance BEFORE ISIS retook the city, and the hundreds of news articles regarding the Russian-led battle, as well as the obvious Wikipedia page about it? I understand that you have a hard time accepting that Russia could be so easily humiliated, but alas, history doesn't back up your version of events.

@@cliffordwebb3656 Apparently, you missed the entire PR stunt surrounding the death of Russian Spetsnaz soldier Alexander Prokhorenko, who was allegedly surrounded by ISIS fighters near Palmyra and called an airstrike on himself. Also, Marat Gabidullin, a former Russian Wagner fighter, mentions in his memoirs that Russian Wagner troops did much of the fighting for Palmyra alongside Iranian militias and Russian special forces.

The russian government and their military sucks for sure, but Palmyra definitely is a strategic location in Syria. Its at the center of the country on one of few arteries going east to west and its the largest town in the Syrian desert.

Israel must understand that any kind of chaos in Syria will inevitably bring chaos to Israel, and Iran is trying to restore its power in Syria by supporting its sects there.

they couldnt care less about chaos. they thrive on it. they did not systematically dismantle syrias weapons just so that they could leave them alone. Right now they need a space to keep all the palestinians they expelled from north gaza. and syria is the perfect scapegoat.
