I don't buy UHD discs but I buy regular bluray discs of my favourite movies. Rambo, James Bond etc. I use a windex cleaner ( ammonia free), wipe dry with clean microfiber cloth, then spread a layer of white toothpaste, let dry for a few minutes or an hour or two to fully harden. Rinse off under tap, wipe dry. In a few hours or next day, insert in the player. All my skips are gone.
I think regular bluray discs are the SWEET SPOT for movies. You get uncompressed HD quality and lossless audio for an affordable price. My Samsung 4K TV does an awesome job upscaling 1080p content. I can definitely live with that. 4K UHD is way too much for a single disc.
So far justing wiping the disc with the microfiber cloth has done the trick for me, regardless of whether it's a new or used disc. I also have 2 of the Panasonic 420 players, as that brand has really impressed me.
My parents' 4K player sometimes can't read the disc once in a few months and it jams. It doesn't go to the menu. There's just black and I can't turn it off. I have to unplug it. When I plug it back in, everything works fine. The disc is perfectly clean. I've had this happen with my "Star Trek" film 4Ks, "Outlander" blu-rays, and "House of the Dragon" and maybe "Andor" 4Ks. All in great condition. Sony doesn't make stuff they way they used to. I'm glad you mentioned that gassing thing. I noticed that film kept getting back onto the discs after I cleaned it. So now I wipe hard those case surfaces with a lint-free cloth to get rid of that film. What really pisses me off is when the prong that's supposed to hold the disc in place is cheaply made and doesn't hold the disc in place firmly and the disc keeps coming loose.
Got the problems of artefacts and skipping with Rope from the Alfred Hitchcock classics collection Vol 3. I wrote to Universal Pictures and they told me to wash the disc with dish liquid to get rid of the protective film on the disc, so the player can read the disc better. And that did the trick for me.

I used to have issue periodically with Universal 4K/BD discs until I rectified the problem. It was the BD-Live that was hindering the disc to play. The disc would just buff continuously to no avail. I went to the video settings and turned off the BD-Live feature on my Panasonic 820, and the discs loaded flawlessly afterward. Could it be the track the lens moves on?
The 4K format is by far the format thats givin me the most trouble, i rarely have these issues with blu ray. 9 times out of 10 4K is fine but then theres that 1 dics, beyond frustrating, from what ive been told 4Ks dont have the scratch resistant coating on them like blu ray. For the most part a simple whip down will clear any issues, sometimes mutiple but i think there only ever been 1 4K i couldn't save. Getting a resurfacer could solve some issues but isnt enough of a problem that a resurfacer just wouldnt be good investment the only thing id save be on is those discs that refuse to whipped clean. Though that being said i do have more blu rays that cant be saved probably 5 or 6 compared to just the 1 4K but blu rays rarely do give me trouble in comparison when it comes to just skipping.
Bro, 4K UHD discs are overhyped and unnecessary. I am a 44 year old. Most top brands of TV have an AI processor that does a great job upscaling 1080p content very well . My Favourite movies are on some form of optical discs ( DVD and bluray). Blurays are affordable and you get lossless HD audio and picture. 4K UHD discs are expensive and an overkill.
I bought Nightmare Before Christmas on 4k and the audio was all scrambled and noisy when I tried to play it on my PS5. Problem was for some reason that disc won't play on PS5 so I bought a separate 4k player (Sony UBP X700M) and tried playing the Criterion 4k of The Others to try it out. The disc froze towards the end, skipped about 10 minutes and had to rewind to just after the freeze. Also just got the entire Tales from the Crypt series on DVD and one of the discs had 3 episodes of Rizzoli and Isles on it. Haven't tried the microfiber wipe to fix the Rizzoli and Isles problem yet
Weird about the PS5 audio issue. I use mine as a spare just to check is the regular player gives me trouble. See if the criterion freezes in the same spot on the ps5, after cleaning the disc. If it does it’s just a defective disc you should be able to get a replacement if it was a recent purchase.
On your Sony Ubp700m go into your settings and set the resolution to 4K and turn off auto upscaling, mine would freeze on 100 gig disc once I put those settings in everything worked flawlessly.
Thank you for your solutions to an old age thats been around since the CDs but to me - it seems worse with these fragile 4K discs🤦🏻♂️. You would think the amount of $$$ that we plunking down and the new technology that it should be error free
I agree error free should be the way, after dealing with it for weeks it was a very enjoyable to pop in a movie in the VCR and watch old tech work the way it was intended too. most people push streaming but I don't have stable internet home video in any format is the way for me.
I have this problem w mine where it plays everything but 4k,but it'll play a selective few. Its a Phillips paid like $160 awhile back. So the cheaper one. I found out when this happens to me,I just clean the laser w alcohol. I plan on buying a much better player tho. But can honestly say I'm not the biggest fan of 4k w all the problems it has. We never had these problems w bluray or dvd. To clean a new 4k disc for it to work is just ridiculous.
I agree a good 2k or 4k restoration on a Blu-ray is an overall good experience. And 4ks shouldn’t have any problems in my opinion. The cheaper cases is also frustrating having to clean a brand new disc was unheard of a few years ago.
I look at all my discs with a high lumens flashlight. It makes it much easier to see any scratches. I almost always wipe a new disc with a high quality microfiber cloth. I keep a small glass spray bottle of distilled water and lay the disc down on the cloth and gently pull it across. It takes any blemish or dust particles off. This is the best method I’ve found for me. It is crazy though, I have had some discs that will play well with scratches and others that don’t have a single scratch but pixelate or glitch. I had pixelation with my 4k Coraline which was spotless and replaced it with another disc. The second one had no issues. There must be small defects in the manufacturing process at times I’m guessing. I like some of the boutique labels but I usually buy online through Walmart or Amazon as it’s just so much easier to return. I will say that I had a couple of discs from Kino Lorber that they replaced for me without any difficulty, at no charge.
Never thought of the flash light I’m always dragging them off to the kitchen where I have the better light. It’s good practice to clean them well but it seem like a new problem in the past I only had to clean them if they were mishandled but now every other disc comes that way.
My Panasonic UB9000 has no problem reading those discs and I would bet the Reavon does as well. Reading forums and seeing other people’s problems many claim that certain players play fine and others don’t
@@80sMadeConsumer Someone said if they put a cooling fan near the Sony, then it played. So maybe the internal tolerances and alignments are off. Could be I got one made on Friday?
I haven't run into that issue yet with my X800M2 player everything I have put in it has played no problem I say yet because I haven't watched every 4K film I own yet
Greetings from "Down Under"! I bought a Blu Ray disc combo of "The Day The Earth Stood Still" movies. Have had them for a couple of years. Perfectly clean discs and stored correctly. However a few months ago I decided to watch the original 1950's movie on disc one. It now boots to the menu screen and once you click on the actual movie icon it just hangs and goes black. What the ?? Can hear the motor spinning but thats all. Got no idea what happened! Have tested on all my players and he same result.
@@MikeLeePhoto that unfortunately sounds like disc rot, or if this is the first time you were watching it very possibly a manufacture defect. It may have never worked. I’ve come across both. If it doesn’t play in any player there is no fixing it. Finding a replacement disc as frustrating as that is probably best solution. In my over 25 years of collecting disc I’ve only come across disc rot from thrift stores still very rare so I wouldn’t fear a continuing problem.

Some of my ancient DVDs make it to the menu portion of the disc on my 4K player, but I can't get a cursor to navigate to "play" or "scenes", etc. I'm now using an old DVD player that my mom had that she hardly ever used and, although I haven' tried it on a disc yet, my old VCR/DVD recorder is also hooked up (played an old video tape of my parents' trip to Thailand in 2000)...terrible quality, but fun to watch, because it's on my ever-expanding bucket list of places to visit. My late mom was a travel agent and she and my dad have gone all over the world!! I still have trouble with 4K discs from time to time and have had to replace a couple because cleaning the disc and/or the laser never helped. One was a 4K version of The 5th Element. took 3 weeks to get here from Australia and could never get past the scene on the ship where Korban's mom calls up. Very disappointing. I hope The Thing plays. I haven't unwrapped it yet, but I like classic horror :)
Cool on having that vacation tape and a way to watch it. The Fifth Element is one of my all time favorite movies I would have been super disappointed if it didn't work. I too have had different luck with some players working and some not on older discs.
@@80sMadeConsumer Yeah...I doubt too many people still have or use a VCR (I could be wrong). My dad has dozens of tapes from all the trips he and my mom took and my mom left us with over 80 photo albums, which my sister-in-law would like to have so they don't get tossed when my dad passes (he's 96 and at an assisted living facility). I'm debating if I should try to record some of the video tapes on to some blank DVDs to preserve them or if the quality is too bad to be worth it. I may take another chance with a 4K version of TFE at some time. The foreign versions seem to have a more dense video bit rate, though for higher quality.
It was on my Panasonic, both my Sony players never had a problem and read everything the Panasonic couldn’t but in the forums a lot of people complain about the Sonys

Are you willing to fork over $1,700 (including tax) for a 4K/BD player? That's pretty steep man. You can buy 4 brand new 4K blu-ray players for that amount of money! The Oppo 205 didn't cost that much. Ask yourself if you're going to utilize all of the features, to get your money's worth out of it. But if you're only going to use it to play mostly 4K/BD discs, then spending $1,700 for a 4K player would a waste. One problem that had never happened to me (DVDs, blu-rays, 4K) but now happens with one or two 4K discs is I put the disc in, it loads and the menu IDs it. It then goes to a black screen and just sits there forever. It never goes to the disc menu or the movie itself. I simply eject the disc, reinsert it, and the problem is solved. It's a minor inconvenience, but it's still annoying. The only 4K disc I have this problem with that I can think of is "Fury" (I think, not certain).
After some research others have reported similar problems after an update the player started to have trouble reading through all the layers of the disc. If at all possible to try in another player even a friends you could rule out bad disc.
The problem with my Sony X700 most of my Bluray titles played fine, the 4k discs on the other hand nowadays the quality like shit and they tend to skip alot. Dont feel like collecting 4k movies anymore.
Blu-ray’s seem to have less problems overall. One thing I noticed on my Sony player is that you have to manually turn on and off Dolby Vision in the settings before you insert the disc. If I don’t then it tries to force Dolby Vision or HDR on discs that don’t have that causing a crappy picture. The skipping could be off gassing residue I’d try cleaning it before writing the whole disc off.
I recently bought Criterion's Princess Bride 4k, and it started off fine in my UB820, but gradually started to glitch out more and more and become unwatchable. If I ejected the disc and started from where it left off, it would do the same... play fine at first but then gradually get worse. So then I put it in my UB150, Panasonic's most basic 4k player, and it played perfectly... Never had that happen before

My Panasonic UB820K always need to clean brand new 4K Discs. My PS5 has no issues whatsoever. If the 4K UHD blu-ray doesn't support Dolby Vision then I'll use the PS5 because of the HDMI 2.1.
It shouldn’t have to be that way but if it works it works. I was reading that some people noticed a problem with Panasonics reading the 4ks after an update and even though they’ve continued to update it it’s not completely fixed yet
i have this fear for 4K since its first announcement, that it'll use more layers than standard Blu-ray, and is incompatible with standard Blu-ray. back then, you can find many DVD covers stating "layer transition may cause slight pause", so more layer always means more error possibilities. but from VCDs to Blu-rays, i found that the issue can be fixed by a newer format standard. many of faulty VCDs will play normal on DVD players. many faulty DVDs play normal on Blu-ray players, and then standard Blu-ray on UHD players. the newer laser standard is always more precise. Now we do not have a newer format than UHD Blu-ray. in addition to that, we got fewer and fewer disc manufacturing plant and the interest in perfecting the methods is no longer there. i hope that i am wrong, but as of now, i suggest all to always purchase Combo packages, either Blu-ray+DVD or 4K+standard Blu-ray. unless its extremely necessary, do not buy a single pack, just in case. but thats just my opinion...
Good point, I haven't thought about that in years even though that's probably happened to me a few times recently. I still use old electronics like the 5 disc DVD changer when watching tv shows the few times that happened I figured the laser was getting old and played it in a newer player just fine. I have been getting the combo packs but also have multiple players, we shouldn't have to go through all that but here we are and its now considered a hobby I guess it's par for the course.
I’ve had the worst luck with 4k players. My first was a Samsung 4k player and after a year it started to grind some of my movies. I solved the problem by going back to blu-rays. I only get 4k titles if they include a blu-ray. To be fair, it may be my player (Sony X700), but at this time I can't justify spending $500+ for a player that may or may not have issues. I love the look of 4k, but they're just too finicky.

@@80sMadeConsumer It's not early in the format though. Blu-ray first started back in 2006 and 4K started back in 2016. That's 10 years of Blu-ray. Now we're almost in 2025 so 4K has been around for 9 years. That's basically a whole physical media life cycle.

Could it be the track the lens moves on?
Very informative video mate 👍🏻

I’m surprised about the scratch coating, I love the picture of a 4k but my Blu-rays never gave me trouble
@@80sMadeConsumeryeah it's all about cutting costs, I guess manufacturers wanted to save the penny and did away with the coating for 4Ks😕
@@80sMadeConsumer I know what you mean
Hi. Can you tell me which microfiber cloth (brand) do you use?
What players can play 4K HDR disc past the third layer?
Sony X800M2 failed that test with a brand new disc.
My Panasonic UB9000 has no problem reading those discs and I would bet the Reavon does as well. Reading forums and seeing other people’s problems many claim that certain players play fine and others don’t

@@80sMadeConsumer Hi yes agree. The thing I hate is it was about $15Aus Dollars to buy the combo set. I hated the remake but at the time here it was the only way to get the B& W 50s original. Now it is going to cost me more to buy the movie as a single LOL !

Is this on sony players, panasonic players use a different cd drive to sonys.
It was on my Panasonic, both my Sony players never had a problem and read everything the Panasonic couldn’t but in the forums a lot of people complain about the Sonys
@80sMadeConsumer best thing with any disc is to use cd cleaner fluid. Even a spec of dust or oil on your skin causes a disc to freeze or skip. But you know this anyway.

Did you buy an extended warranty for your Panasonic and if not, have it service or get a new one.

It is true that used and new old stock Oppo 203s are slightly more affordable, however those are very rare these days

That happened to me but only with the 4K UHD discs ..!!!
It’s been a real problem lately. I have heard that some players struggled to read through all the layers of certain discs after an update
Never had that happen before
That’s crazy some people swear by the manufacture updates but on some Reddit forums people are talking about Panasonic players having trouble reading discs after updating the firmware.
@@80sMadeConsumer I've heard that too, if the firmware updated, it did so automatically at some point...

@80sMadeConsumer Not a huge issue. It's never happened before or since, but it was definitely odd
My Sony ubp700m player was freezing on 100 gig disc, the problem is that there was nothing wrong with any of the disc I had to go into my settings and fix the resolution to match the TV it was set to auto, I changed it to 4K and I turned off auto upscaling and it never froze again.
Never heard of that one, I’ll keep that in mind thanks for sharing your experience.
I replaced it with a Sony 4k player and it had freezing problems so after a year I bought a Panasonic 9000 and after 7 months I started to get artifacts on screen. I played those same movies on other 4k players and they worked fine. Had to send it for repair, imagine having to pay $115 for repairs on a player that costs $1200 🤦♂️ just 7 months after purchase.if the player gives me problems again I’m basically screwed because since it’s been over 12 months now it has no warranty so repairs would be around $700 if it’s the same issue as before.
That is rough I know that my Panasonic 9000 had trouble with 4k disc and someone said it’s a known problem after a software update. Lots of people complain about the Sonys but mine works like champ and my PlayStation 5 reads everything it might do a better job bc it has to read games I don’t really know but I’ll be looking at the Magnetar
@@80sMadeConsumer the magnetar players look nice but after this whole Panasonic problem I’ve had I am very hesitant to pay $1600/$3000 for a player. @@Squishmallows24 I agree the price is steep I’d be hesitant too but I hear good things and I’m all in on owning discs. I’ve had some artifacting from that offgassing oil couldn’t see it but once cleaned all fixed
I solved the problem by going back to blu-rays. I only get 4k titles if they include a blu-ray. To be fair, it may be my player (Sony X700), but at this time I can't justify spending $500+ for a player that may or may not have issues. I love the look of 4k, but they're just too finicky.
I almost did the same thing a really good Blu-ray even an old movie that has had a 2k or 4k scan but is only on Blu-ray look incredible. I recently rewatched Peter Jackson’s King Kong and a movie recorded mostly on film and processed with 2k it’s a phenomenal looking Blu-ray.
As a collector that still watches VHS tapes format doesn’t matter as much I can watch a movie on an old crt and be happy but a good 4k on the home theater system is something special but it’s still early in the format if I didn’t get a 4k tv I wouldn’t have even bothered with the discs.
@@80sMadeConsumer It's not early in the format though. Blu-ray first started back in 2006 and 4K started back in 2016. That's 10 years of Blu-ray. Now we're almost in 2025 so 4K has been around for 9 years. That's basically a whole physical media life cycle.
