    Paper Doll Militia Aerial ABC's highlights a commonly used maneuver in aerial arts, and breaks it down addressing form, function, body mechanics, proper muscle engagement, efficiency and progressions of the move. Working with an instructor in person is the safest and most effective way to learn aerial arts and we suggest that you seek out a qualified instructor whenever possible.These videos are intended to serve as reference and supplemental information. They are in response to the amount of "trick" learning happens from youtube videos, instructional dvd's, online tutorials, and books. The Aerial ABC's are not designed to teach tricks, rather to fill in some fundamental information behind the tricks. Please comment if you found this information useful!
    A note about safety, even when doing simple exercises you should never train alone. You should always be using equipment that is approved and rigged by circus professionals, the most ideal place to practice the material in these videos is in your local aerial studio during open practice time. If you need suggestions on where to train in the US, please contact us at info@paperdollmilitia.com

    Thank you for doing this video! As much as I'm willing to pay for the aerial classes here, I find that I really don't get enough information about how to do some moves, like the straddle ups. In a recent class, the teacher taught us some leg lifts that would help us with our inverts. While it will eventually build me some core strength, she failed to mention the rationale and proper moves on how to do straddle ups. I see myself and my classmates jumping, hooking our feet on the silk to get an invert, and the teacher said it's okay for beginners! Please make more of these, this will be a perfect supplement for my aerial studies. And I need to find a new school.

      I've taken intro classes at several different places and I've seen the same thing at every one of them! I get that a lot of people will never move on and they just want to see everybody get upside down and have fun, but it wasn't until I watched this that I realized where my form is off and how I can fix it. I just booked some private lessons so I can go work through it.

      Ditto! I've been attending aerial for 8 months and I didn't know how to properly straddle up until I watched this video

    Literally the best aerial instruction video available on the net, as a corde lisse performer i look at some of the 'self taught' performers, or the vieos they learnt from and wince at the damage they are doing to their bodies with improper technique, or he potential risks of them not understanding the basic mechanics of the moves they are performing. Thanks for this series of videos, they're no less than a public health service!

    Going once per week, paying for private lessons because COVID......but reality is I'm gonna have to drop to once or twice per month. This channel will enable me to do the drills I need to learn pure technique when I can go to class so I can continue to advance....Thanks so much.

    Hi. Very useful video!! Do you have any suggestions for 'bent arm conditioning' you mention? I'm more and more coming to the conclusion its something other than my abs holding me back. I can do a straddle cross back inversion (which i saw in another comment you consider harder). I can do a few chin-ups and 1 pull up at a time so my upper body is OK, but I'm obviously missing something for a bent arm position. I definitely feel very unstable hanging with bent arms (vs dead hang). Thanks

    @2:10, what is meant by "don't start with your pelvis arching down"? I don't see where the error is or understand what is meant. Thank you!

    • @PaperDollMilitia
      @PaperDollMilitia  8 лет назад

      Meaning when you set your self up ti bend your knees, make sure your pelvis is in line with your shoulders and feet, like a straight line. Don't arch your lower back, or extend your pelvis. Don't stick your butt out (which in this position would be "down" towards the floor)

    Hello!! Thanks for this video! I really have a hard time doing this, I get what you show at 4:03-4:25. Additionally, I feel kind of extra effort on my upper back, I think I'm keeping it quite open instead of locked and closed. Any recommendations on exercises I could work on?

    Try for doing 10 in a row with good form. But remember- ALWAYS take a day off every week. It gives your body a chance to rest and will ultimately make you stronger as well as safer.

    I'm trying really hard to build more core strength for silks. I'm on the basic level of straddle ups at the moment-- how many of these do you think would be a good "goal" to do daily in order to build strength as quickly/efficiently as possible?

    Thank you for this great video! Any tips on straddling and flipping back in X cross-back with double foot tie? I am having the hardest time flipping back. I actually pulled a lat muscle trying it and was out for 6 weeks. I've done it with a little bit of assistance and it felt effortless, so I know what it SHOULD feel like, but not how to get there....I don't want to get hurt again. Suggestions??

    • @bowhitley3876
      @bowhitley3876 9 лет назад

      It is a big hip tilt and a pull with the arms make sure you have your shoulders thew the silks this will help.

    • @PaperDollMilitia
      @PaperDollMilitia  8 лет назад

      Jeanne, sorry for the late reply. I hope you've been working on your cross back straddle and that you've had successes. A crossback straddle is much harder than a regular straddle invert, because you are working against the tension in your foot knots. I always suggest that people be able to do a straight leg bent arm straddle up in the air without cheating before attempting the cross back. If you are solid with that then thinking of pulling the tension out of your footlocks with a pull up, then lean back at the same time as lifting the legs, and rest your torso in the cross while you transfer to pushing against the live ends. There's a lot going on!

    Why are your legs bent I thought they had to be straight the whole time, or at least that’s how I was taught

    • @PaperDollMilitia
      @PaperDollMilitia  5 лет назад

      Bent legs inverts are easier than straight leg inverts, because your body weight is more compacted over your center of gravity. Therefor it's a great tool to use as a progression. If you can do a clean bent leg straddle invert with good form, then you will have a much better chance at getting a solid straight leg straddle invert. Also, aerial arts is an expressive art form, so there are HUNDREDS of ways to do a straddle invert, there is no one way. This video shows form and technique, but once you've mastered the technique, you can choose any leg position you want ;)

    • @cambriagrover8109
      @cambriagrover8109 5 лет назад

      Paper Doll Militia oh it’s just that if my legs are ever bent I am always reminded to keep my legs straight by my coaches

    • @PaperDollMilitia
      @PaperDollMilitia  5 лет назад

      yes, i understand what you mean. the above comment is to explain when you might want to use bent legs...if you're using it for a progression or an aesthetic choice. Your instructor is probably trying to get you to have nice lines, which is also very important. But it's important do be able to do both, so that you are a versatile performer

      Paper Doll Militia yeah I just don’t create my routines because I am a performer in a circus so my coaches teach me stuff and make up my routine
