Episodes of the original Quantum leap and Star trek would regularly get 13-14 million viewers and they were still cancelled. You can't compare TV ratings back in the old days to now. People have far more options for entertainment.
I was lucky enough to see Tom Baker, (the fourth Doctor Who), on stage at the National Theatre in London in She Stoops to Conquer in 1985. The good old days, when we had actual actors in Doctor Who, instead of queer activists and drag queens.
I liked the old Dr Who especially the Tom Baker era. Those shows were so interesting and thought provoking. Today, it is just a vehicle for leftist politics.
The report/article looks typical for middle management reporting to upper management, the company I had most experience with that was in the process of selling itself off and shutting down.
They tried all of this with the awful Discovery ratings too. Word salad and cherry-picking didn't bring Trek fans back and it won't bring back Dr Who fans either.
Got to say 73 Yards is the best of bunch so far. That said I would have preferred it later in season after getting to know Ruby better. This of course comes down to having 8 episodes only this season. This bring up another problem, which is: experiments with format is fine time to time, but if they fail or faill short they can be lost in the shuffle of a longer 13 episode season.
It seems like the people pushing "The Message"(TM) have learned that original programming they create with the message as its core gets poor ratings. So they hijack successful IPs, insert "the message" coupled with poor story and then poisons the IP. Star Wars and Star Trek were once beloved. People who can't communicate effectively tend to latch on to those that do know and end up ruining everything.
@@resent29 "The Message" is a consistent script that Hollywood uses to avoid cancel culture. It's pandering. It's supposedly about inclusion and diversity, but it's really about power. Girl power is great if you also have kick ass writing and stories. These are milquetoast at best these days.

So wait, the 4th episode of the least watched season since 2005 has more ratings than the previous 3 episodes, and they're calling that a record? Are they that desperate that they're lying right to our faces? Btw, this comment is the longest comment I've typed this morning, therefore I've set a record. Call up Guinness.
The push for Dr Who by the BBC is massive, puff articles like this in the radio times reek of damage control, and the ratings should also be taken into account along with all the teasers, trailers and promos that they are constantly airing. From breakfast in the morning all the way past the watershed at 9pm, it's constant. Yet the ratings are in the bin. Not long now until the audience are told that THEY are the problem, not casting, writing, production, messaging of the show at all.
Jodie Whitakers Who ratings aren't comparable because they moved the time slot from the least watched prime time slot to the most watched prime time slot. This is almost never brought up. That move brought ratings up significantly.
My favorite Dr. Who is Tom Baker - when I was a kid, my dad would watch the show with me. Good times. It's ridiculous and disgusting how that show has deteriorated.
The writer of this article deserves an Olympic medal for mental gymnastics, though I'd bet they'd probably find a way to spin that into a gold too. The amount of misleading wordplay and twisting to put a positive spin on a narrative that is overwhelmingly negative compared to historical writings is truly astounding.
Virtue signaling. "OMG, I totally support duhGheyz and transformers!!! Oh, AND Blix skinned people!!! I got a like on my Twitter post, yay, someone gave me attention!!!"
I like to look back with fondness on the days when, as a child, I used to eagerly await Dr Who on the TV & the times I hid behind the sofa when the cyber men appeared. These trendy, selfish bastards will never take those memories from me, whatever they do. For me, today’s Dr Who is just a different show that happens to have the same name.
I felt “73 Yards” was surprisingly pretty good 😱 Perhaps The Doctor not being in 95% of it was a contributing factor. I’m sure normal service will be resumed next week.
I’m pretty sure that bump in viewers has nothing to do with the quality of the show, just a morbid curiosity about the show being as bad as the ratings suggest
They might as well just claim "Dr Who hits all new record for any episode named " for every episode. Just like claiming that you are hitting a new record every second that you are still alive. You have never lived longer. Congrats!!!
- There was a much smaller population of people in the world (or the UK) sixty years ago than it is now. If you had 4 million people see the very first DW, that's pretty impressive when compared to now. - It's not a matter of celebrating if you have a certain number of people viewing the show or not; it's about what it could be if they weren't insulting the audience and alienating them from watching your show. In other words, DW could have WAY more viewers than ever before. - DW has shown a much higher number of people watching it in the past than it does now. There's no way to argue around it or spin it. Touching grass is more entertaining than DW.
Haven’t watched the doctor since HE was neutered and turned into a she. Abbott: “Who is dead” Costello: “Who is?” Abbott: “Yes!” Costello: “That’s what I’m asking, who died?” Abbott: “Correct”
This is like reading a stock market chart or, more appropriately, the medical chart of a patient. The issue isn’t whether the jagged line is up or down at a particular time but the overall trajectory of that line.
It’s such a missed opportunity for DW to have never gotten the “serious sci-fi / fantasy” treatment that so many other reboots received. Let it hibernate for another 10-20 yrs, then try again.
I've been watching and the episodes have ranged from meh.. to WTF so far. 73 Yards was actually pretty good. It hardly had the Doctor in it and had an air of horror/mystery that wasn't immediately ruined. That being said, given the last several years of Who, it's still like spotting a jewel in a turd.
Those people at the helm of so many shows are totally lacking any imagination and creativity ,that they have to destroy good characters and replace them with their silly agenda puppets. Pathetic.
ReTarD and the BBC already have excuses for low viewership lined up..streaming earlier on D+, early on iPlayer etc. This show needs a long break, maybe 5 years at which point a raft of talented young sci-fi writers can bring it back with fresh ideas and a Doctor with acting chops, charm and colour/sex not important. I honestly thought Jo Martin was a far more convincing Doctor than Jodie or Ncutie could ever be
I watched the Eccleston ones and one season of Tennant, but it really was for kids unless it was trying to be all edgy with Torchwood. This newest incarnation is far worse. Things seem very shallow, now.
It was the best episode so far because Ncuti Gatwa wasnt in it. This meant it could develop an atmosphere of tension and danger rather than just happy go lucky. Until the plot is revealed and you realise it makes no sense. Then the more you think about it the worse it gets. But the first half buildup was interesting
I refuse to believe this psychotic production team is shooting for the total IP death they’re careening towards; I just think they’re authentically ideologically possessed & deluded beyond hope. Oh, and Ncuti is the most insufferable person I’ve ever seen.

Key data point: These aren't just the worst ratings for NuWho, *these are the worst ratings in the entire history of the franchise.* Sylvester McCoy got higher numbers.
Doctor Who ended in 1989. The more they keep making this version of Doctor Who this way, the more I draw the line in the sand. Russell T Davies revived the show spectacularly, but now seems determined to put it back in the grave. Well, I'm disqualifying his earlier era too. Nothing after Sylvester McCoy counts. I saw people praising the last episode "Boom" and now we have this... it's official, we've reached the coping phase. People will praise everything that comes out because they want it to be good and it's now just a matter of how long it will last.
So, they are calling it a new series not just season, so they don't HAVE to compare it to the rest of DW.
Typical.
I think it has something to do with the naming convention. What Americans refer to as a season, Brits refer to as a series. There's also the problem that disney doesn't own the older series so they have to start over for legal purposes... To say nothing of that stupid bi-generation.
They originally cancelled the show when Sylvester McCoy's Doctor Who Season 26 had the viewership numbers dropped down to 4.15 million viewers.
They were only 4 channels back then, 4 mil viewers back then would be like having half a million now.

Episodes of the original Quantum leap and Star trek would regularly get 13-14 million viewers and they were still cancelled. You can't compare TV ratings back in the old days to now. People have far more options for entertainment.
There was also a smaller population then so you'd have to adjust for that too.

Exactly what I thought
They tried all of this with the awful Discovery ratings too. Word salad and cherry-picking didn't bring Trek fans back and it won't bring back Dr Who fans either.
The only thing Discovery got right was spinning off into Strange New Worlds, and even then, it doesnt compare to to TNG, DS9, or even Voyager.

Btw, this comment is the longest comment I've typed this morning, therefore I've set a record. Call up Guinness.
They’re counting on low info readers only going by the articles title.
Anything in the "news" has been lyez for decades.
They already did that!
Couldn't have said it better myself. I salute you!

I felt “73 Yards” was surprisingly pretty good 😱 Perhaps The Doctor not being in 95% of it was a contributing factor.
I’m sure normal service will be resumed next week.
It was the mystery that hooked me in 73 yards
I’m pretty sure that bump in viewers has nothing to do with the quality of the show, just a morbid curiosity about the show being as bad as the ratings suggest

Tom Baker was my Doctor as a boy, I did come back to Who during Tennant's run and burned out at the end of Capaldi. I have not been back since.
