Do you always want to remove all the large leaves. It seems as if the smaller leaves are on the bottom and so you would always be pruning and removing large amounts of the top to keep it as a bonsai. I have a month old Fabian aralia in a training pot but I haven't put it in a bonsai for this reason. Thank you for your help
Because I bought this as a stump without leaves I’m trying to promote vigor to specific branches. So I remove leaves that block light to some of the lower/weaker branches in hopes that they can get established and catch up to the upper canopy. When my primary branch structure is set, I’ll grow the tree out much bigger to thicken up those primary branches. Hope that helps!
It can be slowly introduced to full sun, although I’ve kept mine in a bit more shade the last couple years because it is still recovering from a freeze. I don’t mist it but it stays humid in my greenhouse, and it is not a succulent.
No such thing as stupid questions! We are all learning together. If it is very healthy and growing with lots of vigor, I think you would be able to prune the roots back pretty hard. I’d recommend removing at least 25-50% of the foliage when you do. Then keep it in a cool humid place out of direct sun for awhile until it starts pushing out new growth. Hope that helps!
Great video BTW
You've got an awfully cute assistant there. 😉
He sure loves to be a part of everything!

Best light,? Does this need misting? Is it a succulent?

Might be a stupid question BUT can I cut the bottom of this, let’s say 2inch down to the roots or will it kill it?

Hello! Can the upper smaller branch (without roots) be cut off? and then to plant in the ground?
Cuttings on this type of aralia should have mature wood and be thicker than a pencil. Young shoots or growth tips do not root very easily.
@@Backyard_Bonsai Thank you!!
Does the leaves smell like pancake syrup to u?
I haven’t noticed! I’ll take a whiff next time I prune😅
