I was a waiter in both the Vietnam and U.S.A...
The ordering, I actually like the American version. As a waiter, I want customers, regards if you know what you are ordering. Please wait in line, and wait for the waiter to show you to the table, respectful to other customers as well. I see so many Vietnamese customer in America, where I used to work, are disrespectful. Coming in, sit at whatever table they want and start being angry when we don’t take their orders. While other customers are in line waiting, and cut them and don’t even care.
This is not Vietnam, can’t just sit anywhere and everywhere and not think about the people in line. I love my country Vietnam, but please have respect to the people working there and other customers.
Not sure when you were the waiter...But now a day, if the restaurant don't want customers walk in and seat themselves, simply put a sign at the front "Please wait to be seat".
This video is very insightful. Thanks for pointing out these differences. You are quite observant. And it is quite rare that you speak perfect Vietnamese and English. Please continue making these videos.
@@winnwinn7580 You think customers actually follow that sign, especially Viet people. You have another thing coming.
in australia we seat ourselves unless it has a sign saying wait to be seated so i see both peoples points and i dont mind either way..but cutting in line or not waiting your turn is the height of rudeness in my opinion...hate how you HAVE to tip in the USA though..dont do that here unless you want to...

Haha thank you 😅

4:50 "Slurping orchestra" caught me by surprise. That is a powerful phrase. 😆
I've been in VN restaurants in different places. The one in L.A. was so good but soooo expensive (I could buy 12 phố in VN).My first VN restaurant was in Berlin, Germany. Food was awesome.I use to go to one in my city(Barcelona, Spain)which is very good and the crew is so nice and friendly.Recently I got into a new one in Barcelona through a friend, which is also very good.During summer holidays I went to another in Madrid.Yeah,I love Vietnamese food,no matter where I am!🇻🇳
Sr.Saravia good luck for you to
Eating Vietnamese foods..
Vn food in LA should be cheaper than Germany
@@Dchau360 I'm not quite sure, because I can't remember clearly the price I paid in Germany.I paid 12USD for a Phố which was really good for rainy and cold day in L.A. but I can have the same for 8 o 10€ in Barcelona, which is still expensive compared with VN
@@sutannguyen8599 Vietnamese food is pure joy to me.Brings me back to happy moments and nice people in Vietnam.Of course it makes me want to come back
hmm... I think restaurants - nhà hàng, eateries - quán ăn (if that is the right word), and popup food-stalls are often lumped into 1 category by foreigners who visit Vietnam. Restaurants provide proper dining style, while eateries can provide multiple kinds of food with almost proper sitting space for affordable price, and popup food-stalls mostly provide only 1 kind of food with complementaries related to that offering and might not even have proper sitting or only for take-aways
One of the reasons they want to seat you in an American restaurant is to spread out the customers among different waiters. It not only shares the load, but also spreads the tips.
That's right!!
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
The Vietnamese restaurants in the US (or at least in my area) are seat yourself. Most of the time, we do have to go up and pay. One thing that i found curious not all the food is served at the same time....some times my wife's order will come out 5 or so minutes before mine
Very useful tips! Now I understand why the waitstaff don't stop by my table again once they've brought me my food. However, if I need anything or if there's a problem with the food, I'll know to raise my hand and say "Em ơi!" 🖐😇 Oh, and I have no problem with slurping my noodles!
haha lol too true!! i couldn't stop laughing with the scene:" the waiter was impatient"
Hello pretty
When you speak Vietnamese words that you intend us to learn you are able to say it with how foreigner would say it because we learn the English alphabet.
However when you speak Vietnamese naturally it shows you're true Vietnamese. I found it very interesting.
BTW your tips about the restaurants here in Vietnam quite useful. You may want to add though that always check the bill items for accuracy 😀
I find it fascinating 🤨 too be honest I never noticed till you mentioned ❤️❤️❤️ Love from Saigon ❤️❤️❤️
I am planning to move to Vietnam next year so I've been doing some research. Your videos are by far the most helpful. Especially since you can relate Vietnamese culture to American. Thank you and keep up the great work.
Happy to help! Best of luck!
I live in orange county here in California and i go to alot of vietnamese grocery stores and restaurants. But I just never knew how to interact with people. I'll use what you've taught. Keep the content coming!
Van, another fun amazing vid about Viet culture. Keep on keepin on Thanks 👍😁⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Ah...good to know about fortune cookies. Recently I went to a food hall in a mall and found Vietnamese stand there, so I order some menu and eat...ugh, it was delicious. By the way I don't have to say Em moi or Tinh tien cause the waiter / server they are all Indonesian :))
Great complexion ! Great vblog. Interesting and pleasant voice. Will catch more of your videos. Just came across your channel. Keep it up.
I like the way you talk, it's so nice and clear explanation good job
Thanks for another great video. The demo interludes (like at 1:50) really crack me up! 😂 I live in the NE Atlanta suburbs and there are definitely great VN restaurants in the area. I look forward to returning (COVID break now...) and I'm sure I will think of these tips when I do. I especially miss bánh xèo! In the meantime, I cook my own VN food at home sometimes. Currently trying to master bún thịt nướng tôm. 😀
Oh yes, please tip vietnamese people in the US haha
@@WhatThePho Trời ơi! 😂 Okay, free tip for you: Keep making videos, you're awesome!
nice tips, thanks Van, we need more tips from you
My favorite Vietnamese cafe in Melbourne has a menu that goes on for pages. And have been to many cafes in Vietnam with one to several items on the menu. Then paying in Australia - swipe your card. Paying in Vietnam - you hand over some notes. After counting all the zeros. Then the waiter pulls out a roll of notes and peels off a few for your change.
Thank you for this video. I’ve never been to Viet Nam so this will help me big time
Your skits are funny. Lol 😂 . Thanks em 😘
This girl is so pretty!! I love the culture blend!! USA & Nam!!!!!!!
Watching your video, i see you gradually show add more attractive dialogues like talking 'tếu' and it's pretty fun haha
I find it as an American when I say Em moi, they (the Vietnamese locals) always find it funny 😁.
When addressing a lover, especially a girl, you can also say em oi. It roughly translates to my darling in that context. That’s probably why they laugh.
The information is spot on....👍👍
I enjoy your great video 😀. It’s a job well done 👍. I am glad that you made this video, and I believe that this video will help many of your subscribers when they visit Vietnam and Vietnamese restaurants in both countries 💗. It’s very nice to watch your video… you are getting more cuter and prettier everyday😀. I wish you a great health and a blessed life in Vietnam 💗.
Thank you :))
Amazing voice, I really love your content
Interesting video. As I hope to visit Vietnam next year, this is very helpful. Plus, when I was in Honk Kong in 2019, fortune cookies didn't exist when I was eating at a local mom and pop restaurant, perhaps at a high end restaurant, but nonetheless, I didn't see no fortune cookies. Since living in California for nearly 20 years, I was introduce to Vietnamese cuisine from my mom's hair salon specialist which she is Vietnamese and I enjoy her home made Vietnamese food. I will sub to your channel to learn more in depth of Vietnamese culture.
Food is culture, culture is food. Indian cuisine also has north & south variants

Why I can understand when Vietnamese say English, while foreigners say that I don't understand anything, your videos are very useful for me . thanks you
the foreigners they normally use idioms a lot in between which make it hard to understand if you just don't know one or two words in a sentence.
@@trongphan6197 That is incorrect. Americans use a lot of slangs more and seldom use Idioms.
You will only listen to Americans or Vietnamese children that grow up and born here in the US speak English if you really want to improve your English. Practice with your pronunciation and listening you will get better .
@@somethingwong3827 Cut him some slack and give him the benefit of the doubt that he meant idioms.

I spent a week in Vietnam a couple years ago. I loved it.
Hi! I love your videos, especially the ones about food!! I live in Houston, Texas and there are lots of Vietnamese restaurants here. Your videos have helped determine new foods to try at cafes around here.
I found this very useful. More videos like this please 🙂
Vân có câu này mà video nào cũng thấy nên học được luôn , nghe hoài là tự nhiên mình nhớ luôn : I was quite shock seeing .... , I was quite shock receiving ....
Yeah, her English is a doozy actually!
Hi Van, it's nice to see you again.
I have experienced few "tip culture shock" myself while in Vietnam. The waitress is surprised and asks "What is this" when she sees the tip I left for her on the table in the restaurant. On the other occasion, it's me to get surprised when the hotel bell boy calls me "Viet kieu hai do". He sees me as cheap guy because I had just tipped him two dollars to bring my luggage to my room. But that's ok. I still love to visit Vietnam again.
See you again soon.
2 USD is generous.
@@preston74 The bell boy apparently expected more.
yeah bcz maybe have som people thought that: look so rich guy but just tip for 2 dollar while he expected more, i think he's greed person. but it's depends on each person, not at all. 2 dollars is generous, don't mind about that. even though u dont need tips, that's ok. as long as you're kind with waiter/waitress like give the thanks for them. and finally thanks for your coming in here!Wish you have a good experience
Thanks for the info.
Hey V…
Hope everything is good
It’s finally a cool day here in LA
And I’m going to be heading to a great place to get Pho.. it’s around the corner and I’ve never been there
So thanks for all the tips!!

This is great! I will be first chair in the slurping orchestra!
Em oi! MY favorite tip! You are the best!
3:03 - laughed with all our squad. One of the Vietnamiest things we've ever seen. :)))
I really learned a lot but I'll have to watch this again to better remember your tips & explanations. Please don't stop making videos. I hope you'll show pix/videos of places in Viet Nam, like floating market, traffic intersection, mountain temple, bakery...
Miss you, Van, and hope your well. Saw the ugly comments posted on your last live Q&A. So sorry you have to deal with haters who have nothing better to do with their time than think up mean and baseless things to say. You are wonderful. Absolutely wonderful.
Thank you Thomas! It's a part of doing youtube and I just need to deal with it :))
@@WhatThePho God, how true that is! I don't even "do" RUclips, but still have to deal with the haters. Any time you say something substantive, or even not necessarily substantive but in a well-worded way, there will always exist members of what they call "the peanut gallery" lying off somewhere in the shadow of the margins waiting to lurch and, well, essentially show their ass. Especially in the West, and perhaps particularly in the US, there's a real and tangible tendency folks have to do a twisted sort of math which says, in sum, "Your capability shines a spotlight on my incompetence," and leaves them to respond to your input in ugly ways and even on very personal terms. Shutting them up (or down) has almost become sport for me. Easy pickings. They always overreach. In your case? You, my dear, are what we in the US call "the real McCoy." In other words, you simply ooze of not only goodwill but also a rare degree of authenticity. Something to be very, very proud of. So sure, those who lack the capacity for such authenticity and, instead, truck in any of various forms of duplicity, are naturally going to be drawn to you like a magnet, or like moths to a flame. The ugly loathe beauty. It makes them feel cheated. The courage to be authentic is high order beauty. So let them burn themselves out. All the rest of us adore you, as we should.
😎👍

Hi Van, so glad to follow your videos. Massive useful information here. I recently got a job offer in Honai. Just thinking to move there with my family for my next job. do you think it is difficult to live in Honai if we only speak English? I also speak Mandarin. Thank you.

Van, excuse me, thanks for providing such wonderful restaurant etiquette, sorry for the interruption now get back to work😀
my dad is from saigon (hcmc) and hes says slurping is quite rude, while my mom is chinese born and raised in the south but in a chinese community so her whole family has no notion of this. he says if you eat pho in orange county ca (most are southern) you will hear very little slurping from the vietnamese and if you slurp
loudly people will look at you. i had a trip to vietnam about 6 years ago and had visited saigon, but i dont remember anything regarding this

Have you ever been to other country apart from us and vietnam? As usual your videos are always american vs vietnamese and you always portray evrything about vietnamese as the best.
Yes, I was in China and thailand
Choy oiii cái mieng ăn ngon qua đi. Nhìn cái miệng ăn mà thấy thèm.
Slurping is common in Japan, Korea, China. Somehow slurping enhances the flavor. I'm not used to slurping my food because I can get bloated by swallowing air and have to burp which is embarrassing to others. On the other hand burping loudly in the middle is a sign that you were satisfied with your food! LOL
Would like to visit Vietnam one day😄
I actually prefer to call the waiter/waitress to ask when I need something. Because whenever I’m in the middle of talking with my friends, the waiter/waitress suddenly came and checked on us startled me most of the time. I understand they are doing their jobs, but I just feel that I was being disrupt 😂
The restaurants that are in a heavily populated Vietnamese community, like Orange County California, are similar to ones in VN.
Hello em gai, i love food too .
Hopefully when Vietnam open up, i will be back and take you to eat.hii

I wonder if its the same in Hawaii? My family and i are regulars…. We usually leave the tip either in the tip box or on the table under the glass before we leave.
I gave a tip to a waitress in a Vietnamese restaurant once. I said "Plant your corn early this year."
Nice! I have seen the toothpick thing with my Vietnamese coworkers but i never seen anyone bring dental floss
me neither. That's really gross to think someone is flossing at the table.
Im just here to enjoy the cuteness
so interesting!!!!
In Germany we also just sit where we want. I just know being seated from USA.
Yer i absolutly hate when waiters come over during eating. Why do we do this in the west. Add in America the pay is crap they really suck up and fake nice to you.
Just do your job and pay the staff the right amount they should be paid
Then they are mean to you but will never tell you that they want tips.

Love Vietnamese food. Banh Trang Thit Heo, Canh ga chien mam, and rau cu xao all the way 🤤
At first being stared at while eating by some was off putting, but it doesn’t happen often and don’t even notice it now.
Another good tip for foreigners when going to restaurants or coffee shops is if they provide you with an English menu it’s good to ask for the Vietnamese menu too. Had a few coffee shops who handed me the English menu thinking I was a tourist, and the prices were actually higher than in the Vietnamese menu. Maybe it’s a bit of a low-key scam, but something to be aware of as it’s happened to me a couple of times here in Da Nang (even with my Vietnamese wife) 😂
Yup. Even most people who know that Fortune Cookies aren't a real Chinese thing don't realize that they originally came from Japan. But they're not common in Japan either. I think they were originally just a thing in certain temples. Mostly, modern fortune cookies are a result of both Japanese and Chinese commercializing them in the U.S.
Amazing similarity between Filipino and Vietnamese cultures. Most not all, of what you presented in this video is also very common in the Filipino culture. The one that makes me laugh is, when you said give the tip directly to the Server, if you don't, most likely the server will not get any of it. I can assure you, Filipinos visiting Vietnam will feel at home and very comfortable.
My guy friend who married a Vietnamese girl told me he has to go to family birthday parties every single month in a year.
To be fair, before your meal, they do say bon appetit. So I don't see what's wrong with 'slurping'.
We (Americans) do use dental floss, but using it in a restaurant would be really weird/rude, like hauling out a Q-tip and digging at your ear wax in public. :-) I hope you didn't see people flossing in a restaurant here! 😱
There was a line in Platoon or something where they came across some villagers cooking and one is them made a derogatory comment about their food. Fast forward to today and now everyone wants that food, lol.
I wonder what villagers would have cooked back then, lol. I'm guessing it would have been something like pho, but not as Americanized.
Same as any village around the world. Whatever they can raise, pigs, chickens, goat, etc..
I love to eat good food too 👍😊
Chị làm 01 kênh dạy tiếng anh đi
Other interesting highlights are in the US they will have ketchup condiments on the table and in Vietnam you will have sriracha on the table. They will serve hot dogs, pizza and Churros on the US beach but in Vietnam they will serve Com Suon, pho and hu tieu on the beach. Also in the US the price is static but in Vietnam i guess you should double check the bill because the price can fluctuate depending on if you are a foreigner or what not. Would def like to eat an assortment of Vietnamese food @ Vietnamese buffet but here in the US they really lacks Vietnamese buffet.
Oh wow you got me there with Hu Tieu on the beach. Add in a Saigon Beer and you are in heaven
I have not yet found any Vietnamese Traditions that contradics the Chinese's.
Except for the tips part.... Chinese ppl love money, so tips are always welcome/required lol
