  • ‪@WaybackRewind‬ I braved a hurricane to make this video for you and convert a 24 year old camcorder [my TRV-480 - hurricane brain made me call it a 380, lol] into a free over-the-air TV, a VCR and a Smart TV. It's actually pretty easy if not a little bulky. But basically any device with a screen and video inputs can be made into a TV and a Smart TV.

One of the drawbacks to the MacGyver approach is the mess of cables, connectors and peripherals as you've pointed out. I use a USB tuner on an old laptop which is much cleaner, and I can output composite video to my 5" or 9" CRT colour TV for that nostalgic look.

True, that was what we at NASA call a proof of concept. Not even a prototype. I could optimize the cable lengths and come up with a better cage to hold everything it would be more practical. The fact that I can real-time stream my firestick to a tape is old school cool. I keep getting asked if I can convert different things to a smart TV, and the answer is that anything with a screen and video inputs can be converted.
      Thanks for watching.

That was so cool. I have been wondering about this for a while and didn't think there was anything to stop me doing it, apart from not having a small DVB (free digital TV in the U.K.) receiver, so I will have to get one of those and give it a try. I also have the perfect camcorder in that I have a Sony DCR-TRV7E which has a 4" screen.

It hurts my soul that the when TV went digital we still had to have different systems in America compared to the rest of the world. I did see a converter today that worked with all the different standards so maybe we are converging on a world TV?
Converting a camcorder into a TV isn’t the most obvious thing but it came in handy during the hurricane after my Tyler TV ran down.
      Thanks for watching.

Power is back on, fortunately I had a Camcorder converted to a TV to watch while power was off.

I do the same using an Analogue TV transmitter to send to my Sony Video Walkmans and Handycam which I have the Sony Handycam TV tuner.

Nice! I have no idea why modern cameras and even phones don’t have TV tuners. And no phone apps exist for smart TV functionality as far as I know. It seems they limit what we can do on purpose to lock us into a paid solution.
      Thanks for watching.

Yes, it's an old hack. You can also use the firewire as a digital output to record the video digitally to a pc. I used this hack with the following connection: VCR to SONY camera to PC, to record my old VHS tapes to a PC.

Yes of course, I demonstrate this in another one of my videos. Thanks for watching.
