      In the process of taking my 55 to a 120. I'm stuck though because after seeing Aaron's stand and sump I feel the need to spend extra time (and $$$) replacing the stand I already have for it.

      That's interesting to hear, CJ. You had a full setup with a sump, and did a video on how much more you prefer the smaller AIO. So are you going back to tank and sump, or one of the bigger Innovative Marine SR-120 AIO?

    • @CJSAQUARIUMS
      @CJSAQUARIUMS 8 лет назад +3

      45 gallon is the biggest AIO I would ever use...that video I made was comparing tanks of similar size and water volume up to 45 gallons. In that situation Id use a AIO every time.. Next tank would be 100+ gallons and will have a sump with all the things required for it to work...

    Hi reefers! I have a special request for the BRS team. My partner and I are steadily preparing our first reef tank. We are taking things slow and careful, because we appreciate the fascinating and beautiful life that makes reefing so special. We live in Australia, and have been swimming in the Great Barrier Reef. It's gorgeous! But right now, what's left of it is under threat. This is a pivotal moment in history, as we are trying to prevent the largest coal mine in Australia from being approved. This mine will be enormous, bigger than anything that has ever been done here. If you've been following along with the fantastic videos from BRS, then you'll know what kind of impact this will have on the remaining Great Barrier Reef. Please BRS team, can you please raise awareness in whatever way you can of the Adani’s Carmichael coal mine, and the plight of the Great Barrier Reef? The more international attention for this environmental disaster of epic proportions, the better. Everyone here loves the reef I'm sure, and would be devastated to see it gone forever.

    Great video! I hate when Ich magically happens! I think this hobby might be getting to me? It's made me so paranoid about ich that everytime I get stressed I think I'm seeing little white spots all over myself. I tried taking a 14 day bath with cupramine but never lost that urge to scratch myself on a rock. The only thing good I got out of the copper was a nice tan. When I take a bath I like to drink beer to relax. But soon the paranoia reached a new level. Yes, the bubbles in my beer began magically changing into Ich. Ich must have always been in beer but doesn't show itself until we are stressed. I took a second look at my beer, and guess what? The first letter on my Michelob beer magically disappeared! I quickly called my LFS

    I have had great success with treating the main display for ich with Kordon's Ich Attack! It has no effect on my corals or inverts and kills all signs of ich within 2 weeks!

    • @karennation3580
      @karennation3580 3 года назад

      Really? Like what kind of signs did it kill? Did you have fish actively infected with ich? My clownfish died but only with a magnafying glass did I see white dots. I have another fish dying now and dont see dots. two others are fine, so far anyway. I had another fish just disaper and just found amonia in tank. I am wondering if the disapearing fish isnt stuck in the pipes. Its been about 10 days since it went missing so if that happened it has to be disinegrated soon. Just a small royal gramma. Might have jumped but couldnt find it anywhere! Not sure whats goin on or what to do! Might try Kordons!

    I've been in the hobby for less than a year and it didn't take long for me to have my first encounter with marine ich. I'm quite studious in nature but I found correcting the issue was made tremendously more difficult by the overall disagreement and conflicting information. I am now a strong advocate of treating everything that enters a system and through a rigorous quarantine procedure I've managed to keep my scaled friends healthy. Thank you BRS for doing such a great job covering these sometimes controversial subjects. Had all the BRS160 videos been available to me a year ago I know they would have saved me time, money and headaches!

    Dont get me wrong here, I love my fish and theres no denying the beauty of a nice reef tank. With that being said, this is the stupidest hobby decision I've ever made. If you're looking for a fulltime job outside of the fulltime job you already work then a reef tank is for you.

    So it seems I got to learn my lesson sooner rather than later. First two fish in my brand new tank and one of them had ich. Now both fish are in a quarantine tank getting treated and will be staying there for the next 8 weeks to make sure the ich in the main tank is good and dead before any fish return to it.
    I will be quarantining all new fish from this point on.

    That was a great video. I learned my lesson a few years back and created myself a cycled quarantine system and run all new fish through it for 8 weeks before going into my reef. Hyposalinity has been the ticket for me while my fish are in the quarantine tank. The quarantine system stays running always ready for any sick fish. Since then, my reef has been disease free for over 3 years and I believe its also an ich free system.

    • @karennation3580
      @karennation3580 3 года назад

      I set up a quaratine but It didint stay cycled because of no amonia. How do you keep it cycled when you have no fish in it? I have some dr tims amonia. I thought about adding drops here and there or maybe a drop a day. How often do you have to do water changes? I am scared to put a new fish in a tank that is just det up right then, beacuse it wouldnt be cycled and that stress could kill them! I started with all tank water from my tank, so I guess that means its cycled, so if I would have added a fish would that keep the cycle going, If I dont keep one set up all the time. Newbie here and I have learned a lesson becuase I think my clown fish died from ich. We bought a hawkfish and it dying now. He was put in tank about 6 weeks ago, think he was the culprit. He has always been a very shy fish, that hid constantly, never much of an apetite and color was faded on bottom part of body!I would apreciate any help or advice :)

    On last week topic of tank disaster, I thought low salt was my biggest issue. Watched the episode friday night and saturday during my weekly maintenance, I knocked my light into the water for a few seconds. Well by wednesday, I had no more working light and spent all day thursday figuring out what I was going to do because I wasn't financially ready to upgrade my lighting. Well I bit the bullet and got 2 new kessil a360 that I was thinking of getting when in a year or 2 was going to get when I upgraded my tank to a bigger tank. Its a tremendous overkill on my tank right now but when I upgrade my tank, they will be the heart of growth and making my new tank look amazing. Wasn't cheap but better than wasting a few hundred just to get by and then buy the kessils later

    Awesome information as usual. I just want to say thank you. I am one of those people who have been ordering from a very reputable on line company that Qt's fish before you by them. It has worked and for past 2 years I had never had a sick fish. Well last week that changed. My clown fish that I have had for a few months stopped eating.. He seemed to have an intestinal issue and even had a long white string stuck to his underside. Well not having experienced a sick fish I ended up reading everything I could but still did not know which treatment to use .I found most of the information talks about ICK, marine Velvet, and flukes. So I called BRS looking for a recommendation about how to treat him. Well I took the BRS advise and put him in QT and treated him with Prazi Pro. I am very happy to say that seemed to be perfect advise, because after 48 hrs he is swimming very well and even eating little bits of food. I want to say this was much more stressful than it needed to be. The treatment of the fish was very easy. Just one teaspoon to 20 gallons of water. The most difficult part was gathering all the stuff needed for the extra 20 gallon tank I had. I have put together a complete 20 gallon QT set up. It was not easy and I had to drive 2 hrs round trip to get the Prazi Pro. Between diagnosing him and buying everything I needed, the fish had not eaten in 4 days. My advise to everyone would be to gather the stuff now. It will definitely be cheaper and much less stressful in the event you need it. Thanks Again...

    Ryan, I use Seachem Paraguard, cupramine and prazipro during my quarantine cycle for all new fish. I feel like EVERY fish I buy from any of my LFS there is a race against time for preventive measures in saving the fishes lives. I have had a pretty high success rate but there are those you just can't save. Sucks, but I do my best and this is partly why we quarantine...

    I do TTM on fish but i have not done it on corals or inverts, ideally I should but I don't have a separate coral light source.
    If I had a large system with many fish and corals I'd plan on doing it this way.

    I made friends with my lfs staff during my freshwater years and when I started saltwater they were kind enough to copper treat and quarantine all my livestock for me. I’m currently at max stock capacity (13.5 gal, 4 fish) and so far all my fish display excellent behaviour. That being said, I have 6 bottles of disease treating chemicals and dips that I bought on day one. I inspect behaviour daily, amount of food consumed, which food gets eaten by which fish (every week I make a cocktail of brine shrimp, krill Pacifica, copepods and mysis) and occasionally add a fish specific treat (cocktail target feed). The idea isn’t really to show my fish I love them, more like adding a variety to their diet and also increasing nutritional value. I’m a beginner, and I do A LOT of mistakes (*cough* freshwater dip goniopora *cough*) and mostly with water salinity (often swings from 1.025 to 1.026) but I am slowly learning how to properly measure and correct these.

    Epic video! I may be upgrading my tank for Christmas from a 20g to a 75g or even maybe 80g but now im super worried about parasites and diseases because I've never quarantined a fish before! When I got my clowns they were the only thing in the tank and I wasnt expecting to add anything else, so I left them. (I did end up getting a CUC and corals) Then I ended up getting an ORA mandarin and I didnt quarantine it because I felt it would be too hard to feed and that mandarins usually dont hold parasites or viruses/bacteria. Now I want a bigger tank and I'd like to get maybe a few damsels and a tomini tang, and I'm super worried about ich! Im going to move everything from my current 20g in the 70g+, then use my 20g as a QT. Also, if Im adding a few fish at a time, like a few damsels or firefish, can you quarantine them all together or should it be done seperately? And should I be using any medicines or antibiotics or something to the tank even if they dont show any signs of anything? Just for prevention or to kill it before it can build up?

    I once did a service job for a guy who bred fresh water discus. The dude had something 3 huge 220ish tanks upstairs then he took me to the basement where it looked like a fish store with many 10 and 20 gallon tanks and 2 more big tanks. The tanks upstairs on display where loaded with huge beautiful discus. He told me that if i kept my tank at 80 degrees always that I would almost certainly never have ich because it cant live in 80, but anything below that and it will. I took his advice in my own 75 fresh water and never had an ich break out in my 15 years of having it up and running. Im about to try salt water for my first time and i keep seeing mostly 78 recommended. Would 2 more degrees warmer not be ok? Theyre tropical fish. Im sure their ancestors have lived in water over 78?...

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  2 года назад +1

      While marine ich can certainly survive in 80 degree F water, it's not an issue if you want to keep your temperature there. Generally speaking, we recommend between 78-80 degrees with a +/- 0.5 to 1.0 degree F swing.

  • @JohnJohn-hv4ef

    So, when you buy a new coral or snail or anything wet, the most efficient way to ensure that no parasite ever gets in your tank is to quarantine everything for at least 2 months? Is that the minimum period of time all of these parasites need to starve in a fishless environment? Or does it realisticaly have to be longer, like 3 or 4 or even 6 months as I have read in some articles?
    What period of time would you suggest to a "quarantine freak" like myself who wouldn't mind quarantining something for months on end if nescessary, if that meant elliminating any chance of infestation?
    I'm asking because as a "quarantine freak", I wouldn't want to overquarantine but at the same time, I certainly wouldn't want to underquarantine either. I just want to know how many months of quarantine truly guarantee success.
    If it truly is 6 months, don't be afraid to tell me, I'm a big boy, I can take the truth no matter how painful it is, lol!

    Aged garlic is good for humans internally. But I know garlic is terrible for topical use. It's a irritant and prevents blood clotting. So fish swimming in an irritant seems like a bad idea and something that prevents blood clotting sounds bad for fish to swim in if they get a cut.

    Question: My clown fish named Sushi has a lump on its right gill (been there since i bought it a year ago) He is eating, swimming but scratching on the rocks sometimes and has short spasm after (looks like when they change to female) but there is only the clown fish a hermit crab and a coral banded shrimp in the tank (30l ah 8 gallon with no corals) should I give him a fresh water dip for 2-3 minutes and see if the lump goes away(falls of) ?? I'm upgrading to a Nuvo 16 next week and never buying live rock again either! Getting eco/reef saver rock. I don't have room or money to set up a quarantine, so would fresh water dipping all fish that go into the new tank be OK? Is there a dip method for crabs and shrimp or do they need quarantine before entering tanks like fish
    Thanks

    Should I still medicate or treat the tank with anything in my absence? The tank is a 150g with crush coral sand bed, live rocks, hermit crabs and one (my first) tree softie. The tank will be left cycling while i'm gone.
    Would really appreciate some sound preventive advice so on my return
    i wont have this issue.
    I live in Trinidad in the Caribbean where unfortunately everything in the hobby is almost impossible to get without importing it yourself....bummer.

    I've tried The Ginger and Garlic treatment on my Tang and Trigger, That didn't work and I ended up loosing my Twin spot pair and Leopard wrasse. I'm quarantining right now and my Trigger and Tang look better after 3 weeks. 3 more weeks and then they will get the PraziPro treatment twice.

    Yup, often it takes getting spanked before you learn. I got a bunch of clown fish (onyx I believe) from an "reputable" seller with I believe a fancy name like "quality" it's MARINE business name, and they go on about how their fish are great, blah blah blah, well after an event I got them because I had a satellite tank of rose bubble tip anemones, and dumped them in. By the end of the month I had 2 fish left, including those in my main tank, lost other fish that I've had for well over 10 years.
    Now nothing goes in my tank unless it sits in another tank for a month, a frag tank makes a great QT for fish. Then if you feel like you need to treat, then you have a separate hospital tank. I realize not everyone can do this, but having a large fish room can make for a happy wife at home :)

    Sounds like you are saying if multiple fish come down with inch that it is your husbandry. What if you recently purchased new fish and it appears in tank and the tank was fine b4 the fish? I am maybe experiencing this now. My clown fish died 2 days ago, her mate seems fine. Now a hawkfish I got about 5 weeks ago is dying. He has always acted weird, rarely ate, hid all the time and has always had very faded coloring on botton half of body. I only saw white spots on clown with a magnifying glass. I rarely see the hawkfish, but doosnt look like white spots. He will be dead by tomorrow I am sure so I will check out his corspe. I istill have the clowns male mate and a damsel and they are fine! Not sure If I could catch them to quartine. Someone said Kordons ich attack worked and didnt harm corals or fish in tank. Also, only thing my fish will eat is Omega one garlic pellets, so hasnt helped. Really not sure what I am dealing with!

      At the end of the day, if the ich parasite is introduced to your tank at any point, your fish have the potential to be infected. That said, keeping good water quality and feeding the right amount of a high quality, varied diet can help the immune system of your fish immensely. In a lot of cases, fish will be able to fight off ich without a full QT if you take the proper steps.

    If I leave the tank empty with only corals for 2 months after an ick outbreak, won't the nitrifying bacteria die? So, when you add a fish after 2 months you may get an ammonia spike and stress/kill corals.

    Okay, I'm new to the saltwater scene, so forgive me if my question sounds stupid in any way. I see where you guys talk about QT the fish if ick outbreaks, wouldn't you want to QT other tank inhabitants as well like snails, crabs, or starfish? Or does the ick not really affect those tank inhabitants?

    Dear Ryan, I am new in this hobby, earlier i had two small aquariums one with 12 liters of water and one with 22-litre water capacity. as winter is coming in Japan so I planned to add water heater inside the aquarium. So i decided to submerge the two in a big aquarium and bought a big 60 liters aquarium and added both the small aquariums in one but from that day my fishes started dying every couple of days. i am trying my best with the help of the pet shopkeeper, who is the specialist in fish keeping. my water quality is good, the temperature is set to 26c. and there are no signs of any other diseases there but they keep dying. what can be the other reasons?
    please help

    I going to set up a quarantine tank but was wondering if I need to cycle the tank first? Will copper kill the nitrifying bacteria the same way it kills inverts? If so, a cycled tank won't be necessary right? Also, do you have to leave the tank running 24/7 or only when you buy a new fish?

Will those Marine Pure squares ever be ok to add back into my main system or since they have been exposed to copper are they no longer able to be added back in? Thanks!

      Joe N leave them in a dark container in saltwater for a month. 100% water change weekly. Don't fill the whole container just enough to cover the blocks and heat the water. Now only use that container for copper cleaning.

    • @ryansimmons9824
      @ryansimmons9824 6 лет назад

      What works best for me is keeping my hospital tank dry until the day I need it. Ill usually mix salt at 1.019 and add copper. Then acclimate the affected fish for 15 min. Its important to do frequent water changes and add the copper back that was removed. Ammonia will spike if you do not change water on the uncycled tank. I keep it bare bottom of course and siphon all the small particles off the bottom. I'm no scientist but they look just like the spots that were on the fish. So get them out of there.

    I just got two frostbite clownfish from my LFS that quarantines their fish before selling. Its been 4 days now and they dont wanna eat, one of them has a steingy white poop. When i try to feed them they go crazy after it but dont eat it once they close.

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  4 года назад

      If they have stringy white poop this could be related to an internal parasite. I may suggest trying to treat them with PraziPro. This can help to kill off potential parasites, and could help the fish begin to eat. We would make sure water parameters are proper as well.

    Hi!!!! I’m new in the hobby and I’m loving it, I have an saltwater aquarium and I’m very careful with anything about it so.I’m a little worry because my fishes were a Damsels 1 black and white and the other blue, the white and black after a week stop eating and on the white stripes the color changed to a brown I took a video and I went to Petco were I got it but they didn’t give me any reason he died the blue still alive but now I of my 🤡 is acting weird doesn’t want to eat, only want to stay on one corner and the white stripes are changing the color to the same brown I took him to Petsmart and they didn’t see any ich but I see one white spot I explain the same thing and they suggested give the bacterial infection remedy by imaginarium what do you think? Can I use it in the same tank with corals? If so how much? I have 55 galon. I’ll appreciate your help I love all my new family members and I want to know what is causing it.

    Question, when ich or parasite in the (fish only) tank.. all 5 fishes are now gone..
    only 2 snailes remaning... should they stay or leave the tank as well? I just started a 20W UV in a 100gallon tank.. And fishless tank should stay for at least 8 weeks?

    How do you feel about metroplex and focus?

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  Год назад

      Metroplex's active ingredient is Metronidazole. Metronidazole is often used as an anti-parasitic and good for treating or QT'ing against things like brook & uronema and some bacterial infections.
      Focus is generally used for internal parasites or intestinal worms.
      Both medications have their place. The biggest parts to marine fish disease is being able to first identify what you're dealing with correctly, then having the necessary meds on hand. When you wait to order medications until there is a problem, it's usually too late.

    I’ve been told by my lfs that ich lives in the silicone of every tank and that once introduced, there’s nothing one can do about this. But I am confident that that is false because I had a clown in my tank who was sick about a year ago (I had just recently gotten him) and I quarantined (and medicated with copper) him in a hospital tank for 6-7 weeks… then I put him back in the tank and never had any issues… until i got some new fish and foolishly didn’t quarantine for long enough… what does everyone think? Should I try to eliminate Ich from my tank again?

    • @BRStv

      Ich can only live for so long without a host. With a proper fallow period (the community generally agrees on 76 days), you can get your tank to ich free status!

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  3 года назад

      Formalin or Ruby Reef Rally (which contains formalin) are often used to treat Brook. We've not treated an abundance of fish for Brook, but have also never noticed any sort of long-term negative affects. Of course, if you're doing more of a proactive treatment, chloroquine phosphate or metronidazole can also be used on most species. Just be sure to research the individual fish you'll be treating to make sure they can handle the particular medication you're using. For example, a lot of wrasse won't handle chloroquine phosphate well.

    • @BRStv

      If you decide to treat, you'll have to remove the fish from the display as all current ich medications are not safe for inverts and corals. Depending on the other fish you have in the tank needing to be put through QT, I like to use Copper Power.
