  • Well, it's finally (and reluctantly here) the final week in 52 Weeks of Reefing. This week we are going in depth on planning and executing a tank upgrade. Plus, we'll show you the progression of the #BRS160, some changes we would implement if we were to do it all over, some successes, and finish with a montage highlighting some key moments of the BRS160 over the past year.
We will also explore some popular tank options like the Red Sea Aquarium series, Red Sea Reefer and Red Sea Max. As well as the innovative marine Nuvo aquarium and Nuvo fusion 20.

Tell your "Chief Penny Pincher" (great name) that this series as well as all the other videos you guys have produced, re-ignited my desire to get back into saltwater aquariums and to consider a reef tank. With that said once we are in our new house I will be purchasing the Reefer XL 525 and the majority of setup systems from BRS. Your information is a great value to me and I appreciate that are also posting the speakers from MACNA. Thanks "Chief Penny Pincher" for supporting the vision of using the modern tools the Internet has provided to support this amazing hobby.

In other videos you guys had a tank with purple dry rock and put in a bunch of black and white clowns is this the same tank and you guys changed it? By the way I like your guys videos it's really helped me get into salt water and your site is easy to use but with lots of information which I like. Ordered some of my stuff when I started out from you guys a few weeks ago. Your free shipping on any order without jacking up the prices really makes it practical to order from you guys thanks. You guys should do some more videos on all the smaller office tanks and what they use and have found to be liking.

I loved this series, thank you for taking the time to make it. I learned a lot from watching the progress of the BRS160 and can't wait to apply what I have learned! I can't wait to see what you guys put out next! Also, like many others my favorite episodes were the ones on selecting livestock and feeding corals but I am also partial to the one about the rollermat which I think is pretty cool.

I can't thank you all enough for this wonderful series. It has saved me from making tons of rookie mistakes while setting up my first saltwater tank.
Now that the series is over, I think it's time for that long anticipated Zeovit episode.

BRS has done this hobby a huge favor by producing this fantastic series. A company that puts this much effort into providing everyone with the knowledge they need to have success most definitely has my loyal support. Whenever I come across someone that is interested in the hobby I always point them to the 52 Weeks of Reefing.
    My favorite episodes are:
Week 19: Compelling data for using T5 on your reef tank
    Week 29: Calcium & Alkalinity
Week 48: Solving your reef tank's algae problems forever
Week 51: What you need to know to cure fish disease & parasites
Thanks for all the hard work and I'm really looking forward to watching the MACNA speakers!

My wife and I got into reefing just over a year ago, and of all of the resources we have found to help us get up to speed, your videos are our favourite. Every episode is approachable, but also contains a vast amount of accurate information. Ryan is an outstanding host, and the production is excellent. Thanks for doing such a top-notch job.

With the exception of the tank and stand, I've purchased all of my equipment through BRS, the reason I even knew about your website was because when I was researching how to set up a saltwater tank on RUclips and I came across your videos. I am happy to report I have been successfully keeping an aquarium since November, so much of my knowledge and success is thanks to your videos. Please continue to make videos to help us members of the reefing community... Should this request get denied I would just like to thank you for all the trouble you went through making these videos and I for one am very grateful.

I really enjoyed the entire 52 week series. I'm fairly new to the SW side of aquariums and the BRSTV channel has been one of the top resources for me as I have been setting up and upgrading my 90 gallon reef tank. Keep up the great work guys! I always look forward to new uploads from you and I will continue to be a BRS loyal customer!!

this has been an excellent series. especially for people like me who's fairly new in the hobby. I Can't Stand to read. and anytime you ask a question that's all anybody tells you to do. So when I see anything that has any length to it I won't even look at it. I've learned a lot from the series I have more to learn so I need to rewatch some videos. thank you Mr. Ryan and the BRS crew.

This video series was awesome. Every week I would make sure to watch what was going on. I am 7 months in on my first reef tank(40B, 20L sump) and this video series has defiantly help me with my "new tank issues" and how to solve them. I'm excited to share my 52 week process in a few months! I knew this day would come when the series ended, but I want to say thank you for everything. You guys rock!

If your CEO is giving you a hard time, you can tell him I'm a customer of this company and will continue to be loyal to it because of this series. I started watching this series knowing nothing about reefkeeping and have learned so much. Learning new things every day is part of what has gotten me addicted to the hobby. I watched every episode at least twice and also have been watching almost every video in your channel. I particularly enjoy your attention to detail and specific recommendations. My favorite episodes were weeks 35-37 discussing corals, but I also enjoyed the week about producing water (which prompted me to buy one of your RODI systems) and the week discussing pests, which helped me to deal with my GSP and vermetid snails problems. You guys are awesome and I hope you keep doing videos like this. You should do some videos with the cerebra implemented on a tank to see its full capabilities. Can't wait for the next series.

I treated myself to my first MACNA this year so this was the first time I couldn't watch an episode of 52 Weeks of Reefing at home with my Saturday morning coffee. Thank you so much for offering such a great series. The scope and magnitude of this tank progression was epic. You kept me thinking about what I wanted and maybe what I needed. Every week you gave me options. Now I have more to think about than ever. Your efforts were much appreciated and I believe you've pushed every reefers aspirations just a bit further. Thank you.

Stumbling across this series is definitely the reason I finally pulled the trigger and set up my first reef tank. These videos make the research fun and exciting. Everything that went into my new reef tank came from BRS from the sand to the skimmer and ATO. No comparing the info provided or the production quality. Next BRS studio investment should be some CGI for RT's mustache. You guys are awesome!

Definitely love this series - and absolutely love all of the team there. Anytime I contact with a question or concern, It is promptly addressed, professionally handled; but most of all, I feel that there are times where I could be sold something that "would work" but would definitely not be "the best" for my system and the honesty of the people I talk with in getting what is "THE BEST" for my setup and system is always what is pushed for. That makes me want to come back over and over because I know it's not JUST about making a buck - You guys care. Never lose that.

Have to say a huge thanks to Ryan and BRS for producing these videos. I've spent the better part of the last year siting through the anticipation on Thursday night for what would be coming on Friday! These videos actually got me back into the hobby after 15 year break and the small system I started up is now full of thriving LPS and SPS the entire family is enjoying every day, plus I've started build of a 300g display with dedicated fish room in my basement. Now that I think about it I've emptied my wallet a bunch of times on the BRS website over the last year as well so maybe that's the best way I can show appreciation...haha. Seriously though, thanks a lot guys for the effort.

First, I love this series!! I watch a lot of RUclips and the two finest channels to watch are BRS TV and Tidal Gardens. The information and beautiful photography are top-notch. The information you have provided in the "52 Weeks" series is invaluable and a must watch for newbies as well as seasoned reefers. I'm going to be starting a new build soon and you can bet I'll be using your series every step of the way. I've looked forward each week for a new installment, very much like Ralphie in "A Christmas Story", watching his mailbox for his "little Orphan Annie Decoder Ring". Secondly, I was thrilled to hear you would be filming the speakers again this year at MACNA. I've watched your previous segments several times each. It's very lucky for the reefers, whom can't attend, to be able to see the speeches given by this industry's leaders. Thank You So Very Much for all the hard work and time each of you has devoted to providing us with volumes of information and entertainment.

Please keep doing these long term, weekly, project specific videos. The 52 weeks series gave me something to look forward to every week. Also, another comment stated it perfectly, the youtube channel creates a consumer connection to Bulk Reef Supply; for the last year or two almost all of my tank purchases have come from BRS because I enjoy the videos and have learned so much from your videos. I've become a lifelong customer and recommend BRS to friends every chance I get. Side note, customer support through facebook is always a pleasant experience, even when I ask the same stupid questions over and over =D

Incredible series! Thank you so much for sharing all the priceless information and for all hard work you put into these videos Ryan and the BRS team! As a new reefer, this hobby started for me about the time you aired your first episode of the BRS 160 and it has been such a helpful and enjoyable experience progressing into the hobby with new episodes each week. I learned so much and I owe lots of my success with my 55GAL mixed reef tank to your videos, high quality products and customer service too! Cheers!

Congratulations on completing the series Ryan! This was by far the best "How To" reef tank series I have ever seen. Not only was watching this reef tank grow neat, but seeing you as a real person, getting married and have a first born was pretty awesome to share. Maybe one day you can be the dad like me (4 kids and scout master) and I can be the reefer like you!
As far as favorite video, Im a go with the lighting series. I knew on my 110 I was going all LED and already bough the fixtures. After seeing this series, I reconfigured my canopy and shoehorned in 2 HO's The tank is only 18" so that is all I can fit with my hydras. No other video made me go back and rethink or re-plan any other detail.
I disagree with your controller comment. In hindsight, no one who already decided they want a controller would build the tank first, then go back and redo everything for the controller, so you are correct in that regard. However, there are several different controller sand several different schools of thought. I think had you settled on the controller first, you might have lost some followers.
Just like the Zeovit, had you decided to do Zeovit first, you might have lost a lot of people. But you did not, because you went over the carbon, the UV and the refugium, which applies to most of us, before revealing the Zeovit direction. Honestly, had you come out and said, we are BRS and we are building the Zeovit 16o with the new Apex Controller, I probably would have never followed.
You were best serve to develop a series that applied to the widest audience possible and I think you achieved it. Congrats! Looking forward to the updates.
    Chris

I finished watching the entire series! Thank you for making this incredibly detailed guide! It is perfect for a new fishkeeper like me. This guide showed me it is worth purchasing quality equiptment upfront to avoid heartache and expense later on. I made a small purchase from BRS for my first freshwater system. I plan on purchasing all of my saltwater system equiptment from BRS after saving up for a few months. I want to make sure my future fish have a stress free life. Thanks again for this awesome video series!

For the past year I have loved seeing this series. The only thing I would like to see is maybe a 30-40 minute condensed video that we could show to a new reefer to get them a good idea of costs. Also a "penny saver" video would be good, explaining what you can do to save money, what is acceptable to buy used and what isn't. All in all it has really helped me be successful and I wanted to thank you guys.

I very much appreciated this series. I had a couple of tanks, but this series made me obsessed with Reefing again. After taking a year, and watching each episode multiple times I have started a new build in my basement. I started the prep work (electric, sink in fish room, planning the system) a couple of weeks ago. I am even coming to MACNA this year from Toledo, and hope to see you guys there.
I thought this was a great way to end your series. Ironically enough the new build is a 48x24x24 rimless. You can tell your boss I planned every detail of my new system after watching your series. I picked out all of my equipment, over $6k all through BRS. I was actually going to pull the trigger this past Sunday on your Labor Day 10% sale, but decided to wait until after visiting MACNA to confirm every equipment selection. I justified the $600+ opportunity expense because of your investment in the community, series like this, I would continue to buy from BRS regardless!

Even though I am an experienced reefer and most of this has been review, I still pick up a new thing here or there and enjoy watching these videos! Also, I've recommended this series to several folks interesting in getting started in reefing, which is a heck of a lot easier than all the liveaquaria threads I used to point them to, and much less overwhelming. I'm sure this will have a positive effect on reefing in the future!

All are great videos, but ones on rock and coral placement, focusing on fundamental setups were most valuable to me as I've moved and re-setup, added rock, power heads, sump, ATO, and a refugium in the last 8 months. I now am prepping to add more corals since the system is stable. My point is, I have confidence in my actions because the BRS team has produced this greats series. Thanks for making this series! Very well done from the editing to the presenting and information. I learned a lot and appreciate the new knowledge as I get into reef keeping. Look forward to more!

I'm going to miss this series! I've spent a few K's on BRS thanks to this series so yeah, those pennies were well spent on both sides, your CEO and myself :D. Thanks guys! I loved everything you did and the inspiration you were able to transmit to hundreds of other reefers out there including myself to reboot my tank after a failure. Thanks both Ryan's! I would have seen you at MACNA this weekend but the money I saved for MACNA is now with your CEO and on my tank due to the crash. I hope to get to meet you one day.
    Emmanuel.

This series echoed far beyond the us to Israel where i live, and although brs wont ship to my erea this gave me tons of know how to start my own aquarium. Keep this production live and open yourself to the international market - you'll be surprised how profitable it is

I was on the fence about getting into the hobby due to the cost and a high failure rate. These videos really helped break down the complexity of everything from tank selection to chemical reactions and everything in between. I feel a lot more confident about starting a reef now and will be buying all of my equipment from BRS as a result of these videos. Thanks guys!

I can see that a lot of effort (and money) went into making this series. I think it's a really positive contribution to the reef-keeping hobby in general, and was very informative for me, so thanks for that. I liked that you did a series on alkalinity, calcium and reactors, it was not only informative but fun to watch also. I've personally never used two part, so I liked being able to see how you guys set that up. The same for the series on lighting, just awesome.
I totally agree with you that shopping for, selecting and installing a controller right at the beginning of the series probably would have made life much easier for this build but even with that said, I think it turned out better this way for the viewers because we got to see a broader view of the other possibilities using other equipment. Maybe you see it as a mistake but overall I think most people would agree that it ended up just adding to making it more informative.

I'm certainly going to miss this series. This had been without a doubt the best well produced series of videos out there that covers all the basics of setting up a tank. Can't wait for what comes next and the progression/update of the BRS160. I hope your CEO is reading this message. Your CEO should be fire if he feels like this "expense" is not justified and don't think that this is the best advertisement you guys have made. I can't imagine the transit growth you guys have got to your site since you started producing this high quality material. This series have been in mouth and forums all over the place. It is the most go for any beginner before starting in the hobby.

This series has been so helpful!! Tell your CEO it has single-handedly made me shop your site instead of competitors! I am a fairly hard researcher and have been reefing for a few years but the series had such a holistic approach that it really filled in a lot of gaps of knowledge for me. It's been so helpful while I've been upgrading my tank.

I chose "Other" for week 50 because it takes cahones to show the world a mistake was made AND also how you analyzed and addressed the issue. Even the pros can have an off-day yet make the best of it with cool heads.
For the bean-counter, the professionalism of the videos shows and only adds to the credibility. I've been subscribed and have watched all the videos and several of them more than once! Poorly done videos rarely get me to watch until the end and don't get repeats -- other people need to learn to quit blathering on and on as well as have an action plan to keep interest up. Really good instructional and also why you've done what you've done. Some of us [newbs] need the specifics of "why".

    Hi BRS,
I have to tell you that the BRS 160 series has layed out a clear path of how to set up a successful sps tank. You have showed that it is possible. You have reignited the reef aquarium dream in me. You should look forward to seeing me spend substantial amounts of money with you in the near future.

I've learned a lot. Thank you. Some of the stuff you have covered shortly after I have done or delt with the topic but your series has shaped where my reeling hobby has gone. We started with a 60 gallon and just over labour day upgraded to a fully custom reef ready 90 gallon with built in overflow and after having a custom tank I would never buy an off the shelf tank again. Part of that is here in Canada a 70 gallon standard tank costs $400 plus tax and my custom 90 was shipped to my door and the way I want it for $430 with tax and shipping. Also your lighting videos have driven home the use of a par meter which is next on my list to get.. I look forward to your next series of videos.

I can't believe it has been a year already! I have learned so much from you guys and have started a new tank based on the equipment reviews and data specifically from this video series. My favorite episode was #19 compelling data for T5s. After that episode I bought my ATI fixture. I really hope you do another tank build and progression but go more low tech and get into the biology of reefing more. Thank you to all the BRS staff! Y'all hiring???, lol!

Ryan, let me thank you for putting this series up, been in the hobby over a decade but it sitll gave me a view of what else is there. It really gave me inspiration to start up a new tank and use some of your advice with ways to go. I mean your series was so great that I genuinely got bummed when your had to leave for your baby (I understand though).
Just came back from MACNA, and got a Seneye coupon code too from BRS, so looking forward to picking one of those up later. I really hope to see more like this, and in fact when I get the time, I'm going to sit down with the tablet and watch the serious from the beginning again.
