- Fly Fishing for Shad on the American River. Hooked into some heavy shad and landed a really nice one. A friend new to fly fishing joined and in this video there are some good basics for the beginner as well. Also, the striped bass are starting to follow the shad and boy did we see a big one out there!
Enjoy the video and tight lines!

Beautiful water, awesome place, hard fishing today but good result anyways, tight lines, thumbs up and good day from New Zealand,, Tony.
Always good to have you stop by my channel, thanks Tony! 🎣
Thanks for the casting tip in those waters! I've caught many a shad at that spot on a spinning setup, but getting into fly fishing myself.
Thanks for the comment - tight lines! 🎣
In the beginning clip, that was an otter you can see it’s head. They always do that and it scares the hell out of me every single time
Thx for the clarification- tight lines!
sink tip line. no need for a bobber leads lengh about4 to 6 feet with 1.5 foot of 8 pound tippet will work great..this is my set up for the past 20 years
Awesome- thanks for sharing your tips here! Much appreciated! 🎣
Do you use fluorocarbon or monofilament when you shad fish and what pound test line do you use
My tippet is 8 lb fluorocarbon which my bottom fly is on and my upper tag fly is on 6 lb fluoro. I use nonslip mono loop knots to the fly so they have more natural action. Thanks for watching and tight lines! 🎣
@@westcoastcast6479 have you ever use shrimp and krill scent from pro cure on that bloody Maria fly
Hate to ask, but any info on this spot? That bass action looked crazy
Really anywhere on the lower half for striped bass now 🎣
I was near Harrington- good luck!
Hate to break it to you but that was a beaver, not a bass.
@@MikeNeumann2011 we do not have beavers on the American friend!! Would be sweet if we did though
Where is the spot at
Near Harrington access… all the park access points are good now. Cheers!
