This is the most amazing April 1st video release.
At first I thought it was about the Iron Bands idem or a new version of ioun stones. So Mr. Greenwood, any tales of a time when a player, a GM or even yourself used a magical Idem in such a way no one ever thought of to throw a story off the rails?
Here is a mystery I would love an answer to. I loved the Halruaa video as it has long been my favorite location in the Realms... but there is one thing that makes me sad. In the absence of the old order of things there, I have to assume that Behir Breeding has become a lost art. According to what lore I know taming behirs is near impossible though many have attempted it. So, supposing one wanted to throw caution to the wind, head out to the countryside and start their own behir ranch, what would the process be to start a profitable behir breeding operation with minimum risk of being electrocuted, crushed, devoured or any combination of these three outcomes. Moreover, where could someone go to learn this lost skill now that the magical community of Halruaa is in a state of decline?
Mr. Greenwood I would adore your personal extrapolations/personal views on the Crown Wars! It’s such an underviewed and mysterious part of the lore that I would love to learn more about

Meanwhile, my alcoholic drow would collect every one he found, learned to activate them, meticulously shape it into a fist, and put a tankard in it so he could fight AND drink at the same time, then claim he in fact invented them for that purpose.
This would be such an awesome item for pretty much any character to have.
Imagine having several of these things as a martial class and being just an absolute menace to anything magical.
So much fun potential with these things!
the best thing is there's no way to know how many spells it can absorb, so it only works for as long as it's fun

And when all of the existing spheres are "full" of magic, they all simultaneously release their stored arcane energy and birth a new deity

I had a chance to be a player with Ed DM back in the late 90's.
Fantastic dm and a genuine nice person, a year later I got on a elevator at gen con with him and he remembered me without any hints.

Question, I get the impression that the spell energy captured could then be used in some way, judging by how the spheres sink if they have not enough power in addition to if they are overloaded. Would I be correct in that? If so, does anyone know how, or has that secret remained unsolved?
Ah, but what happens to the magic it absorbes? What if the sphere is destroyed? I think I will have to introduce these into my campaign and have some fun answering these queastions. Bwhahahahahahaha!
He said in the video what happens to the magic it absorbs; the spheres operate on the absorbed magic, remaining active until the magic runs out, it is willingly deactivated by the attuned individual, or it absorbs too much magic too quickly.
This is making me want to play 2nd Edition Realms during The Time of Troubles again and conduct back handed dealings with Cyric! I'm psyched for Realms again for the first time in a long time. Hell yeah!
I don't like 4th or 5th Edition. Even 3rd & 3.5 has a different feel to it. The Realms & Ravenloft are my two favorite settings....and ya never know when The Mists may reach their tentacles into Faerün, Kara-Tur, Chult, etc!

So much like one of the varieties of Ioun stone then [Ponders] April 1st? is that in any way relevant here? .. [checks books] the lavender and green ellipsoid ones type 11 & 12, absorb spells of up to 4th and 8th level respectively (with 10-40 and 20-80 maximum levels absorbed), burned out dead ones that have reached their limit turn grey, psionic strength of the owner of a dead stone is boosted by 10 points (1st edition rules).
I personally never used psionics. They're too sci-fi to really fit into fantasy. I simply state, you you either want a low tech sci-fi game or a magic filled fantasy game to any and all at the table or wishing to approach it. Everyone seems to want magic.
@@BDSquirrel Never used them as a player or a GM myself either, besides being a bit sci-fi for most campaigns I also found them poorly fleshed out in 1st edition (more or less an incomplete afterthought at the back of the Players Handbook, I got the impression they were something of a vague "this might be cool" idea that had never really been properly play-tested like most of the rest of the rules) with lots of ambiguities and inconsistencies when I did consider trying to incorporate them into a game once, so I didn't, just trying to figure out how bits of them were supposed to work was going to be more work than I was wiling to put in at the time.
I was also pretty sure that as written they would badly mess with game balance, particularly between players if only some had them, hence the thought that they'd not really been properly play-tested for the game at that time.

6:03 "They work until they don't" Sounds like a topic of study for artificers (if divination spells can't figure that out, that is).
Also, is the full description (and mechanics) of those spheres written down somewhere (like the Patreon or the D&D wiki)? This was the first time I've heard about them, so now I'm wondering about creative usages (like tricking an enemy spellcaster into saying a sphere's activation word, make them unwittingly attuned to it - that part might be a bit harder to pull off -, and then foiling any spells they could be trying to cast on themselves - like something that's a part of a lich ritual - by having the sphere absorb it).
10:55 Another mythical creature I didn't know about (hieracosphinx)! The hieracosphinx has "the head of a hawk and the body of a lion". I only knew about the "vanilla" sphinx (which has "the head of a human, the body of a lion, and the wings of an eagle") and its association with riddles (which appparently came from the Greek, and not the Egyptian).

Lol, I never remember reading about these spheres, but in a different system I run, in FR, I have a hematite sphere, which does the same thing, it takes the energy of the spell, and can convert to either spell energy or healing energy at the direction of "owner",

So I'm wondering could they be weave anchors that Thaevur created (either knowingly or unknowingly) for Mystra. As the sphere absorbs more spells it becomes a more effective anchor until it fully absorbs spells to it's capacity. I'm also curious about if they discharge the energy and become active again over time and if so how?

Great minds think alike. The Druids in my games craft something similar to prevent fire magics from igniting forest fires. Even non-magical fires won’t light within 50’ of an active quenching sphere.
When one absorbs all of the energy it can, it will give off heat for years, depending on how much it was enchanted to absorb. Carrying a burned-out stone in your backpack will make it like summer around you, even in the depths of winter.
Placing a Quenching Stone on a tree and casting Plant Growth will cause the tree to absorb the stone into its heartwood, creating a Summer Oak. A Summer Oak cannot be set alight and the weather around it will be as pleasant as a summer day all year round. There is a reverse form, called a winter palm in desert regions that absorb the summer’s heat, keeping an oasis at a steady 70 degrees, night and day, summer through winter, using the exact same magic.
This is old fey magic that Druids do not share with outsiders. They will not reveal how it is done. It was a gift from the Summer Court to the first Druids, whose forest homes were too cold for the members of the fey court to visit.
Druids do not create these groves lightly. In a forest spanning thousands of miles, there may be only a handful of Summer Oaks. They are in the meeting places where the Druids confer with the fey of the summer court or around the standing stones of summer. To place them everywhere would offend the winter court and draw the wrath of malicious fey.
Can you explain what one would need to do in order to take two magical weapons and combine them into a single weapon with the properties of both? My Paladin has a mace of disruption and a sunblade in their possession and would like to find a way to bind them together into a greater weapon of justice.

If someone is using one of these, they had best tell their companions how they work. I imagine many have died due to the sphere absorbing vital healing spells to prevent death, followed by absorbing a revivify/ressurection attempt before they figure out how to seperate the sphere from the bearer.

If the bearer dies while the sphere is following them will it continue to stay by the body? Lets say for instance his friends take his body to be ressurected and it absorbs the spell 😂.

I’d assume so. He said that while active they will absorb all spells cast on the user or any aoe spells that the user is in the range of.

You're from the editions where magic was often described as being rarer and creation of magic items had a cost. I miss those days in the modern games people run. Modern games feel much more like anime where magic and special powers are just everywhere. Being a wizard in modern games is not special at all because everyone in the team has magic abilities. Same thing with finding a magic sword... you find them all over the place it seems. I'd like to know your thoughts on this. Do you prefer tons of magic or magic to feel like it's rare and interesting?

Ed!!! I've never had a means of contacting you! Sir with much respect I would love if you gave your opinion on my view of the forgotten realms. I keep writing a story in my mind(occasionally) writing it down. I've thought about it so often over the past two years that I could probably write a campaign book effortlessly.
