The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

A beautiful salute to Ireland. Makes me smile and proud that I am 1/4 Irish. A large portion of my mother’s maternal family is Irish. Both sets of my mother’s maternal grandparents were Irish immigrants and my great-grandfather’s mother was also Irish. My maternal ancestral lineage hails from the Irish counties of Dublin,Kerry,Armagh, and Donegal.

Rooney was a vaudeville dancer. He passed in September of 1962 at age 82. This is likely the last video footage of him.

Rosemary was NOT on Broadway at the time. The one and only time Rosie ever appeared on Broadway was at the Uris Theatre in 1976 as part of “BING CROSBY & FRIENDS”

@@bettyhein5784You are correct. I mixed it up 😮 It was Olivia De Havilland who was starring on Broadway in "A GIFT OF TIME" opposite HENRY FONDA. They did a scene from the play on this Sullivan episode. Sorry for the error. NOTE: Surprisingly, Maureen O'Hara also made only one Broadway appearance in the short-lived "Christine" in 1960.

While most people would know that the words of Danny Boy were put to the tune of The Derry Air, they would likely not be aware that the original music was called O'Cahan's Lament.
It was composed by a blind harpist named Rory Dall O'Cahan (Blind Rory) a member of the O'Cahan clan, who lived sometime between 1560 and 1660.
The confiscation of the O'Cahan lands in the early 1600s by the English enraged Blind Rory, whose people had lived on those lands for generations, and it drove him to write the deeply moving tune of pain and passion.
He claimed that he fell asleep under a tree while drunk and that he heard the little people playing it to him in his dreams.
Another blind musician Jimmy McCurry was playing O'Cahan's Lament on his fiddle during fair day in Limavady County Derry in 1851, when he was overheard by Jane Ross a local woman who collected Irish airs. She paid Jimmy the princely sum of a florin to play the tune repeatedly until she had taken it down.
It became The Derry Air and while there is a plaque in Limavady to commemorate Jane Ross poor Jimmy McCurry is buried in an unmarked grave in a graveyard nearby Ballykelly.
