Amazing!!! She sings so softly even though this part has a very different tessitura in every song.. And Grace finds every time new colors and timbres....
(I know some people will abhor what I'm about to say, but I don't really care) What I find most fascinating is in Bumbry's Carmen is how you can tell there's a soprano in there waiting to get out. Not to say she wasn't a brilliant mezzo - she was; she "out-mezzoed" every other mezzo I've heard - but there's a brilliance, an ease, a lightness to her sound, especially the top notes, that predicts this Carmen would, in later years, become a Tosca. Of course, hindsight is 20/20.
@@direfranchement You're entitled to your opinion, of course. As I said in the beginning of my own opinion, I don't really care. Or agree. (edit - my username changed but I'm the poster of the "Peter Piers" post)
@@direfranchement And there I was, trying not to be outright rude, but you beat me to it. Your "fact" has been disproved by an amazing career and by the quality of the voice as it entered its, 6th, 7th and even 8th decade - no mezzo singing Turandots, Normas, Toscas, Abigailles, Lady Macbeths, Aidas and the like could possibly have ended with a voice as fresh as hers did, because if you are singing outside of your register for years and years and years on end - on major roles - then it takes a toll on your voice. The very fact that she ended with a voice as fresh as it was when she started proves my "opinion" and invites you to rethink your "facts". EDIT - I know that Bumbry being a Mezzo or a Soprano is a point of contention, so as I said I don't really care that some people agree or disagree; everyone's entitled to their opinion. and it's not worth anyone's time to bicker over something like this, especially when, when it comes down to it, she was an excellent singer. What drives me absolutely up the wall is the arrogant contention that my opinion is worthless and that you are swooping in with a well-proved fact to reduce my opinion to shambles. Well, I've got news for you: your "fact" is in fact your "opinion", because there is no way to factually prove that she was not a Soprano (in fact, as evidenced by her legacy of recordings, there is ample evidence she was). You may OPINE that she was better as a mezzo than she ever was as a soprano, and point to recordings of sopranos that you think are better in certain roles, but that is the full extent of your possibly-provable OPINION. That is where your "fact" stops, as well as mine and every other fan's. EDIT 2 - On second thought, considering the ample evidence, she was obviously both a mezzo and a soprano - a "Falcon", which is a problematic classification named after a soprano who ended very prematurely but which seems to fit Grace Bumbry well. Or a Dramatic Soprano. Considering she sang Alto, Mezzo and Soprano roles with tremendous high quality, maybe the best classification is "assoluta", though I'm sure hearing-impaired arrogant people like yourself will cringe at this.
oh god, such a beautiful music makes me crying everytime I listen to it. it feels so dramatic like a life but the way of expressing it is not serious at all...!!!
such a strong middle/low. I was sad she switched to soprano roles. Many of her high notes fly upward- she sang sharp on many of the highest notes as a soprano. Always an amazing artist,. The low/middle- so rich and strong. Not swallowed like some mezzos- One of my all time favorite voices...
The thing about her in the role is how she becomes a woman from another era and place. I have seen carmen's who are far too contemporary. She transcends. It fascinating to watch
Muchísimo años sin escuchar a la Sra. Bumbry.
I know that. I've sung Carmen before. I was responding to a comment above mine. She in my opinion was a Mezzo, but the point is she did do soprano roles and refused to be called either at one point.
@moghedien13 Very interesting observation! I'm liking this wonderful directing you've just pointed. really shows how powerful and desirous Carmen truly is to those around her, although we see her power come to fruition at the end when she hops up herself and captivates the scene.
A mezzo? I didn't know that! Are you sure? I'll have to learn more about opera. Anyway, she signed a contract as a mezzo, soprano or whatever NOT as a dancer, or ballarina?
Agreed, except she was signed as a Mezzo at the time, but I totally agree otherwise. Then we didn't know what she was after Aida. But I love Grace the Mezzo. LOL! I come to hear opera singers sing, not do a dance. In most stagings, Carmen isn't dancing. Dancers are.
Her singing is AMAZING, her voice so rich, luxurious and resonant, and her acting full of eroticism! But yes, it's stupid that she is not really dancing, she seems to be in the background (however, not with her voice! :) )
Yes, but the character she is portraying is supposed to dance, and, being the main character, Carmen is supposed to be in the centre of attention. And I am not saying it is her fault she is not dancing, it has to do with the production. I meant to praise her, not to criticize her! :)
She was born to sing Carmen. RIP, Madam Grace...❤❤❤
Well speak for yourself...I think she played the hell out of the Carmen role. Her french interpretations are so warm and clear.
She has the perfect voice as a mezzo soprano :>
Her voice is just stunning !
Oh how wonderful it would have been to see and hear Grace Bumbry in Carmen in person.
YES, this is a CARMEN!!! Bumbry+Karajan forever!!!!!!
She was a genius in this role!
Amazing!!!
She sings so softly even though this part has a very different tessitura in every song..
And Grace finds every time new colors and timbres....
Spectacular! She deserves a great Carmen for ever !!!❤
The close up nature of the video brings out Grace is more than a great vocalist
(I know some people will abhor what I'm about to say, but I don't really care)

She was never a real soprano. She was always a mezzo. Began and ended her career as one, and was much better in those roles.

I like that she is flirting with the feet of the dancer :-)
Thats cute!
had the chance to see her in Vienna, she was the darling of the public here. great!!!!!

Shes so gorgeous!, of course fabulous voice
When i think Carmen I see Crace Bumbry. For me she is just the Carmen. Beautiful.
Effortless great brumby the best carmen
Sure, there have been so many Carmens. In the modern times we can only try to figure Bizet.Grace captures those Romantic days like we were there.
The thing about her in the role is how she becomes a woman from another era and place. I have seen carmen's who are far too contemporary. She transcends. It fascinating to watch
THIS was the Carmen I knew as a child.
The best Carmen ever! ( although I absolutely adore Callas). Bumbry does an excellent job in Carmen. Could it be the director and the set?

I'ts my favorite aria of "Carmen".Carmen is an enchant woman. But it's fantasy. She expressed Carmen very well.Thank you!Ms.Grace Bumbry.
thank you for sharing the gypsy song carmen, i'll always remember you this way and counting
One of my favorite Grace Bumbry pieces...
This is the best ever!
¡Mui hermosa esa cantante! ¡Grande mezzo soprano!

@aztequedeor Yes, it´s a matter a good taste. Garanca is cooold like the ices of Letonia. Ewing gives the exact dimention to the role, for me.
Bravo!!!!!
I recently found out she's a Grammy Award winner!!!!
brava brava bravissima brava tutti brava bella brava bellamisa
Grace is so GOOD @ 2:29 She's thinking about driving her White Ferrari
sublime !

Grace Bumbry a stupefiant Carmen
Wonderful!!
where can I purchase this DVD
BTW, the costumes are true to flamenco dancers even today (Yes, including the polka dots)
the best carmen ever, maybe
wow, she is not a bad carmen at all. i love how she sparkles on the high notes
Bumbri.sei.la.migliore.
GRACIAS
Beyonce's Carmen Hip Hopera brought me here wow
Estoy de acuerdo contigo (Elina Garanca; De España vengo)
yes sure, she was a mezzo, she sang soprano roles later in her career though, but carmen is a mezzo role
@moghedien13 Very interesting observation! I'm liking this wonderful directing you've just pointed. really shows how powerful and desirous Carmen truly is to those around her, although we see her power come to fruition at the end when she hops up herself and captivates the scene.
No, its called « Chanson Bhémienne ».
The original name is « Les Tringles des Sistres Tintaient ».
isnt this also called dance bohem?
gorgeous voice =)
i also think so..
A mezzo? I didn't know that! Are you sure? I'll have to learn more about opera. Anyway, she signed a contract as a mezzo, soprano or whatever NOT as a dancer, or ballarina?
bets carmen ever too in my opinion
When was this filmed?
sei il benvenuto.haha..

WHERE IS THE MICROPHONE ?
Of course she is perfect. Thanks for your patient wait.
The network may become worse and worse because of the stupid earthquake you know.
I think he's saying he does like her carmen (a mezzo role) and was sad when she began to sing soprano rep.
@JMusicLover24 So lavish and sexy, a true diva! Although i question the polka dots on some :p (it was the 60s i guess)
You're welcome. haha.
does anyone know what she's saying? I don't speak French, so any lyrics would be nice.
She signed a contract as a soprano not as a dancer.
@sisisk No please, don´t say that. Best Carmen ever is María Ewing, then Berganza.
Is it my comment that you can't understand, or the lyrics of the song? If not, I'll try to translate them for you, 'cause I'm French...
Una grande !!!! Ma preferisco la Callas
for your consideration,,voz de turpiales..
she a signed a contract as a mezzo not as a soprano
I'm embarrassed..I can't understand..

She was not even acting..
great vocie but her eyes in2 : 36 are creepy
Creepy? What r u talking about?
Вravo!
What a beautiful voice. What a beautiful woman. Wow. Just, wow.
