Spotify pitch description: - Tag social media - Suggest a playlist - What motivated the song? - Explain who your audience is - Mention reference tracks
I landed two editorial playlist this year. Gold Instrumental Beats and Moonlight Beats. In my pitch I like to describe the motivation for the track and what playlist it would be a good fit for. I think once you land one Editorial playlist it becomes a little easier to land more as they can see you have been previously featured. Also I am sure they look at your monthly listeners and followers so use other playlist to build that up (Ko-fi, Daily Playlist, Soundplate etc). Make sure your bio also contains keywords to your sound/genre and also link to similar sounding artists with larger followings.
Hey I loved this comment, how Spotify curates their playlists is something I've been thinking of a lot lately. I’m doing some research on how a musicians community might affect this. I’d love to buy you some lunch over a phone call to talk more about this!
Their genre and instrument lists are awful. Extremely localised unusual options in there, major genres or instruments not listed. I hate the fact that there is no way to contact anyone to raise issues like this.
Is there a maximum number of characters to write in the description? I had a thought that I could write specifically there what I think my songs genre is
Yes…as an artist myself with at least 3 tracks currently sitting on Spotify editorial playlists it is great to hear a little bit about their curation approach. I can’t believe how many artists throw away the pitching opportunity. Even though I create music in the calm acoustic guitar genre everything you talk about on your podcasts and videos is also quite relevant to my musical world too. Keep up the great work !!

I found out that they can actually see the audio file when they are listening to each pitch and because of the frequency of how many they listen to per day , one key selling point to get them to listen longer is to see if there is a jump in audio volume when the supposed chorus hits. If they see it it’s another opportunity for them to listen to your submitted track for longer especially to your selling point like a chorus or hook.

It might works for you since you do these hiphop/trap'is beats where competition is way smaller regarding editorials, but in house music in general it's totally different - and who has most contacts, those gets editorials. Checked, tested it and it's 100%. :) Even labels I get emails from which offers me to release my songs on their labels, says it's 100% guarantee placement for editorials, because of distributor. :)
Imagine telling Chris this his knowledge of how something that he hones his craft on is incorrect, inadvertently discrediting the testimonials throughout this video alone in support of him!? A local band I’m in followed this advice with one of our songs and that song ended up outperforming any of the other songs and landed on various playlists. We have no contacts. Check your bias. Nothing’s guaranteed for anyone who follows this advice (will never be that easy) but Chris appears to be a genuine guy coming from someone who’s followed his advice for the past five years. Fair warning, a lot of the info Spotify claims for Editorial is simply not true. A lot of info has come out proving that the placements are NOT overseen by real people, and are placed by an Ai. See the video on a song that got corrupted into a 29second loop making it to a #1 editorial slot somehow. Not only that if you take some time to look through Editorial placed artists, it seems 25% of them or so have absolutely no online presence. Not only that they only have a few songs out. Lastly, and most oddly, they aren't even verified pages. Yet somehow some random 2min long lo fi song is on 10 Spotify editorials when they have no way to pitch the track through a claimed profile. I do not say this to de motivate anyone. I say it to not take it personally, and so you can understand a lot of the "Genuine info" Spotify shares seems to be straight up lies. EDIT: You will also find plenty of people online who got approved for editorial without putting anything in the description at all. I do not believe any of what Spotify claims is true. I myself got over 350k plays in one month on an Editorial and the next month it reported as if they are radio plays even tho the editorial lists still shows up. (Says 12 plays or something absurdly low lol)
I agree - also know first hand at least here in Australia there are a bunch of digital marketing agencies (like dew process - sony) who have a meeting with spotify and apple once a week and literally say here is who we are pushing (like 20 artist songs) and then voila next thing you know they are all featured in editorial playlists. I do believe some playlists (like A1 - rap australia spotify editorial) have one person who is in charge of it since they also have a instagram page for this ONE playlist.
The random artists you're talking about are spots bought by the big labels that they let people ghost produce for them especially in the lofi scene they do it that way, in vocal Playlist these will be real artists owned by such labels but their is no difference to that
I recognized you right away! saw you at a show awhile ago and could never forget you improvised rap with random objects haha. Keep up the good wok sir!
I wish every artist could make at least $1500 a month from doing music. This is a job like any other and the hard work we put in our stuff deserves the right amount of attention from music lover all over the world.
Why would you listen to the company? They rip artists off, they don’t have your best interests in mind, so why would you take any of this advice at face value?
I know everyone has had different experiences but if it wasn't for Spotify I wouldn't have the career I have. Don't give up dude! It's not the royalty rate, we all just need to get more fans! Post your Spotify link below so I can check out your tunes!
I hate Spotify more than most, true seething hatred for them as a company. However I agree with Chris. You gotta set that aside and tap into the potential it provides. like it or not the algo is the closest to youtube and the only streaming service with true organic reach once you get started. The radio promotes better than any paid service ever will. Turn your anger into motivation. Every monthly listner can be a giant middle finger to Daniel Ek lol. Every stream a win. Don't like it? Good. Use that energy!
@@SMARTMUSICBUSINESSVIDEOS I think everyone here is missing my point, it wasn’t about the money they pay. It was why would you trust a companies advice when it comes to success on their platform, when they don’t want/care if you have success on their platform? It was wether you can trust their advice.

I've submitted my pitch like two days before release since it was my first single and I had to wait for my Spotify Artist account to activate. I had no experience whatsoever so I didn't know about 4-6 weeks before release and I'll definitely keep in mind for the next time. Shame there's not much I can do post-release though. That song holds a special place in my heart and would've been nice if more people heard it :/
Hey I loved this comment, what you can do post-release with a single is something I've been thinking of a lot lately. I’m doing some research on how a musicians community might help with this. I’d love to buy you some lunch over a phone call to talk more about this!
Its a myth that you have to pitch like weeks before the release. I am working at a digital distributor and in know from a trustful source, the curators listen to the songs one week before the release date. I landed two Editorials in one year with two different songs. Completely independent (no Label, no management,...) And I pitched like 10 days before release. The second song was put on an Spotify Editorial 2 months after release.
4:17 This is the only stuff I didn't really know, but it's really helpful. It's nice to hear what is possible to add - basically that you can advocate for yourself more than I thought.
Anyone with this much power over an artists work should not be making artistic decisions. Someone has to come up with a better system based solely on whether the listening public liked it or not, not some stuffed shirt on the 35th floor of an office complex in L.A.
Cool video....but the spotify team is telling lies I promise you....stick to ads engaging fans and getting on as many real credible playlists as you can
I think my biggest drawback is that im multi genred. I have music all over the place from chill lofi, to cyberpunk techno, to psychedelic trance, to ambient piano, to uplifting edm. I dont have a specific audience to target so i think thats harder for me
A question i would love your answer on - what makes an artist come up first on spotify ? for example - what do you do if you have the same name as another aritst? 🙏💕
one of my friend called sadzilla got on an editorial playlist called tirade who hi got 1# placement in and the tracked was glitched and the song was repeated for the 30 seconds over and over for 3 mins so they def have some algorithm or some sort of bot thats reading and listening to the pitched songs vibe and tries to see if if fits the playlist that are similar to the track, also it doesn't matter what you write on it, just give it key words to give the AI info to be more accurate, when pitching it doesn't matter the day you pitched to land an editorial playlist, a song of my friend landed on an editorial with 4 days left to pitch but for release radar it does matter the 7 days at least so it gives you more chance to be in the top of the playlist! theres a lot of info he knows in deep sadzilla it very good at Spotify stats and knows how to work with it well!
Notice how none of these people championing for you to use these Spotify song promoters have an Official Artist Channel. Like really, think guys. Why would they know so much about it, if they’re not even goddamn artists themselves?
Looking forward to gaining some insights on how small artists can thrive on Spotify. Excited to see what strategies and advice you have in store for us in 2023!
I dont know if i think this is good or bad actually. Everything is so curated nowdays. If you already have an audience... you are looked at as if you should be pushed forward more. (like everything in social media). Actually making it harder for new artist. But okay. So... these people are the "gatekeepers" that decides what is "worthy" or "good enough"? What is the purpose of this? To push music THEY find that is good? Or to push EVERYTHING into playlists? Just a quote that stuck out for me. 6:40 "we look at how many organic listeners the song have". That makes no sense... if it is a new unreleased track, right?
I loooove that you gave us these clips of the spotify curators telling us all the inside information, from now on I'm always adding my socials in the pitch, and suggesting what playlist it would fit well in
Mate, thanks for this video but as and artist being in New Music Friday, Mint Playlists etc...I never could achieve this without pitching via label...I have submitted myself and never gets into any of them. So the true about pitching is just good for algorithm (if it works correctly).
i think this is only possible with the "PLUS" package. and you need to schedule your song more than 7 days and only then your song apears at upcoming, or the button to pitch in home page
My new song KIMIYA blew up on RUclips but Spotify is going a little slower. I have been added on many big playslists that helped with my streams but not editorial yet

The thing that really bugs me about the last part is that I make industrial music, and I live in Washington DC... Industrial music isn't a thing here because DC is all about rap/hip-hop and punk music, and not open to other genres. From the bands/artists that I've met in the last 20+ years during my involvement with the music industry, they all haven't had success here until they move to a different city. Magrudergrind and Chemlab only found success after moving to NYC, and the same thing happened to Bad Brains as well but they were known for touring in both cities and most of them still live in DC. I don't think artists should feel punished for producing in a music genre that isn't getting support from their local area. And Spotify shouldn't be dismissing artists that aren't doing local concerts. Spotify is streaming platform after all, not a music label.
I’m from Dc also and make EBM/ industrialish music. It’s kinda like punk electronic and industrial mixed. I do some hip hop stuff to. Feel free to hit me up. Like you said I don’t really know many people making that type of music around here. My friends that do are all living in Philly or nyc. My vocals mesh pretty well with industrial laced instrumentals. I have my streaming links in my RUclips bio, hit me up if you dig it
I would just like 10,000 + streams a month I make all sorts of music dubstep, drum'n'bass, trance, hip hop, trap, drill, dripp & I have 1 country blue grass track as well.
I don't quite understand how I would deal with a song on Spotify for Artists before my distribution service has released it to Spotify. Any help would be much appreciated!
This video was a huge eye opener 05:16 I couldn't for the life of me understand why I was Spotify playlisted from a song that was 2 years old They actually put me on 2 list & I didn't spend a dime on that record but new people love it. Just goes to show you, it doesn't matter how you get the music out. Just put it out if it's good! TODAY! Also KEEP CREATING!
Really cool look into the inside operations of spotify playlists. I appreciate this info and insight 🤘🎶 youve got my subscribe. Looking forward to more
Very small 'artist' here. I focus on instrumental guitar music - so very small niche. I have not had much luck on Spotify. I pitch every release but it's a tough nut to crack for an unknown artist. I have been doing most of these things in my pitches intuitively. Funny thing is I have a lot of success on Amazon music. I get into a fair number of playlists there and have regular peaks in the thousands of weekly streams. For some reason the algorithm on Amazon latched on to me. It just doesn't translate to Spotify. Any ideas on how to migrate this success?
By just looking at the Spotify staff I know my music has no chance at all. All they want is rap, reguetón, hip hop, and pop. They don't even have the option for contemporary piano music as a genre which means they are letting you know they don't care about that music.
I gave up trying to pitch my music when i realised there is a selection of 20 genres and thats it. No option for no genre. They dont want to listen to your music unless its part of a genre that already exists. Thats fine but i wont waste my time trying to make music that fits in better...
Hi, I have a question please, so once your EP or album is already out, basically you cannot pitch your songs anymore? You have to plan ahead and pitch them before they are actually released? Is that how it works? Sorry I just needed a little clarity on what is allowed once the project is already out and stream able on Spotify.
Love yall man, this is making life so much better for me right now in this moment and it means alot!!! Thanks for this info and detail, we appreciate it very much!!! Blessings!

Where is the option to pitch a song on Spotify for artists? Maybe it’s only available in the US or something, cause I’ve been releasing music for 2 years now and I’ve never seen the option.
You can only pitch songs that are not yet released. This is why it’s so important to submit your release for distribution well ahead of your release date!
I have a question. I just released my very first single to CD Baby and am waiting on my release date in two weeks for them to curate a Spotify Artist page for me. The song is uploaded into my CD Baby dashboard but am I able to pitch it to a Spotify Editorial Playlist now or will I need to wait?

Keep at it keep researching and never lose your passion music tends takes years to find the right ears
I wish every artist could make at least $1500 a month from doing music. This is a job like any other and the hard work we put in our stuff deserves the right amount of attention from music lover all over the world.
Manafest?! no way!!! thanks for sharing man!!! 🤘🤘 "It's not impossible!"
Rock on!
Why would you listen to the company? They rip artists off, they don’t have your best interests in mind, so why would you take any of this advice at face value?
And Apple and Google rip them off, at the end the little guy pays
@@SMARTMUSICBUSINESSVIDEOS from even more deeper insights i know that spotify submissions immediately end up in their trash inbox, when you are independent
Any Artists have 2 ways...
Spend a lot of money to get views by bots
OR
Save money and be happy and don't care about listeners
You gotta invest on what matters bro!
I feel like you are staring into my soul, but you definitely earned a subscriber.
Awesome video - to have actual footage from Spotify. Thank you!
This is hands down one of the most helpful videos ive ever watched on youtube.
This is so helpful! I am looking forward to including a link to a spotify playlist I think I'd be a good fit for and social media links!
Good info, I just re-released 2 songs I put out 3 years ago. I guess it's worth a second try. Thanks!
That song holds a special place in my heart and would've been nice if more people heard it :/
So great bro! Thats a fresh start!
Let this fuel u to make ur next project a banger brother💪🏿
Hey I loved this comment, what you can do post-release with a single is something I've been thinking of a lot lately. I’m doing some research on how a musicians community might help with this. I’d love to buy you some lunch over a phone call to talk more about this!
Re release it and pitch it
Its a myth that you have to pitch like weeks before the release.
On point!
Anyone with this much power over an artists work should not be making artistic decisions. Someone has to come up with a better system based solely on whether the listening public liked it or not, not some stuffed shirt on the 35th floor of an office complex in L.A.
Praise Jesus✝️

All Praises to him!
Amen!

Nowhere does jesus say we should e we worship him he says worship the father only
This video is about everything artists shouldn't be thinking of or doing.
Cool video....but the spotify team is telling lies I promise you....stick to ads engaging fans and getting on as many real credible playlists as you can
agreed.
Add this to the list of videos of the year #Blessings 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Awesome!
I think my biggest drawback is that im multi genred. I have music all over the place from chill lofi, to cyberpunk techno, to psychedelic trance, to ambient piano, to uplifting edm. I dont have a specific audience to target so i think thats harder for me
Wow. We have watched sooo many videos on Spotify playlist pitching. This is by far the most helpful. Thank you sir!
Glad it was helpful!
A question i would love your answer on -
what makes an artist come up first on spotify ? for example - what do you do if you have the same name as another aritst? 🙏💕
Hehe, I can gladly say I’m growing very well and it’s all organic. 🖤
That's great!
one of my friend called sadzilla got on an editorial playlist called tirade who hi got 1# placement in and the tracked was glitched and the song was repeated for the 30 seconds over and over for 3 mins so they def have some algorithm or some sort of bot thats reading and listening to the pitched songs vibe and tries to see if if fits the playlist that are similar to the track, also it doesn't matter what you write on it, just give it key words to give the AI info to be more accurate, when pitching it doesn't matter the day you pitched to land an editorial playlist, a song of my friend landed on an editorial with 4 days left to pitch but for release radar it does matter the 7 days at least so it gives you more chance to be in the top of the playlist! theres a lot of info he knows in deep sadzilla it very good at Spotify stats and knows how to work with it well!
Be on top of the game bro! Sent you a dm in IG!
Notice how none of these people championing for you to use these Spotify song promoters have an Official Artist Channel. Like really, think guys. Why would they know so much about it, if they’re not even goddamn artists themselves?
I was one of the artist that got playlisted. This year I’m going up
Looking forward to gaining some insights on how small artists can thrive on Spotify. Excited to see what strategies and advice you have in store for us in 2023!
I literally came across this video out of curiosity I didn’t even know what the editorial playlist was 😭
Thx for elaborating on the Spotify reco
I dont know if i think this is good or bad actually. Everything is so curated nowdays. If you already have an audience... you are looked at as if you should be pushed forward more. (like everything in social media). Actually making it harder for new artist.
But okay. So... these people are the "gatekeepers" that decides what is "worthy" or "good enough"? What is the purpose of this? To push music THEY find that is good? Or to push EVERYTHING into playlists?
Just a quote that stuck out for me. 6:40 "we look at how many organic listeners the song have". That makes no sense... if it is a new unreleased track, right?
Exactly!!!
Youre completely right. That quote fits to the comment of @prod.vibeydev8249
On point bro!
i got my track on the release radar 4 days before i sent it through my distro
Amazing!
It’s dark and we’re wearing sunglasses hit it!! 🎉
I loooove that you gave us these clips of the spotify curators telling us all the inside information, from now on I'm always adding my socials in the pitch, and suggesting what playlist it would fit well in
You got this!
@@SMARTMUSICBUSINESSVIDEOS thank you!
I like hearing my songs work for me for years
Thank u very much for posting this!! Very much appreciated 🙏🙏
HOLY SHIT bro i just found your channel on a whim ! I remember finding your band on MuchLOUD as a kid ! total LEGEND was like skatepunk mixed with rap
Amazing! Long time ago :)
That's awesome dude! My Manafest RUclips is not as good as Spotify. I make most of my money on RUclips from fans using my songs and the RUclips Content ID system! I'll check out your stuff!
@@SMARTMUSICBUSINESSVIDEOS thanks man i have been subscribed to your channel, and yes i am not sure why they didnt accept my editorial pitch, i have a very good description but i do not think i had it written by then. good video though, what was that one app you used to mention that lets you target ppl who have spotify via instagram ads
So if you have an album out and was never pitched before releasing in 2022, there’s no way of pitching it to Spotify?
Thanks for the info. Dude looking like a Tony Hawk's Underground cutscene character.
I wanted to be a pro skater... got hurt and started writing songs ;)
Do you offer playlisting services?
If yes, how much does it cost to get to a song listed in 500 playlist in Spotify?
Very good video. Thank you for your hard work to get this out.
Where exactly is the PITCH button? Cannot find it.
Yoooo bro can you drop like a list of editorial playlists on Spotify to check out ? Having a hard time locating them if you don’t mind bro! This video is fore
The only song of mine that got on a editorial playlist I didn’t even pitch, it was after 3000 streams also
Great start bro! Do message me at vip@smartmusicbusiness.com for more tips!
Because the reality is songs are based off an algorithm not some ghost editor making decisions.
When remixing older songs, don’t you have to get permission by the owner?
I have my streaming links in my RUclips bio, hit me up if you dig it
I would just like 10,000 + streams a month
I make all sorts of music dubstep, drum'n'bass, trance, hip hop, trap, drill, dripp & I have 1 country blue grass track as well.
Well thats great to hear! If you need help with. You can email me at vip@smartmusicbusiness.com
Your channel is a god send
Older songs don't die. They just go to sleep.
Fantastic video mate... loved it. Releasing a song myself very soon... BIG HELP - thanks
Hello so I’m a new artist I go by cloud 9ine and I was curious to how much coaching was ?
when i pitch i do it out of habit but i feel its kinda hopeless, how many thousands of pitches do they receive, its like winning the lottery?
Thats fine but i wont waste my time trying to make music that fits in better...
this video is one of the most insightful ones i have seen! Subscribed and liked! Thank you!
Thanks for the sub!
Pro tip: start ur song with the chorus. Dave Grohl famously once said “don’t bore us get to the chorus”
I love that!
Hi, I have a question please, so once your EP or album is already out, basically you cannot pitch your songs anymore? You have to plan ahead and pitch them before they are actually released? Is that how it works? Sorry I just needed a little clarity on what is allowed once the project is already out and stream able on Spotify.
Yes, if you need coaching assistance with your spotify let me know. We can help you out!
Please I do need a coaching assistance. Thank you so much for the information.
Love yall man, this is making life so much better for me right now in this moment and it means alot!!! Thanks for this info and detail, we appreciate it very much!!! Blessings!
Hey man! My pleasure! Sent you a dm on IG. Lets chat!
@@SMARTMUSICBUSINESSVIDEOS Hey Manifest,
I appreciate it! I reached out, but did receive a message from a member of your team, but then no one replied after that?
Still available when you have time.
I tried this but it didn't work for me. I uploaded my latest track and checked (daily) for it to be able to be pitched but it never came to fruition. Maybe just bad luck on my part but it really sucks that I missed out.
Yeah. Good info and all but tell me how to pitch something when you're a new artist without following.. I mean this info is all good for someone with an established following. But how can you build a following in 2023/2024 without the exposure?
Thanks dude!
I wish I had watched this, your video last night when I pitched my new song. It´s the most clear video Thanks a lot!
Glad it helped!
Truly amazing information!!!
hey man i hope u answer i have an important question
do u know if the editorial playlist team are located locally and speak the language or u can write the description only english
Where is the option to pitch a song on Spotify for artists? Maybe it’s only available in the US or something, cause I’ve been releasing music for 2 years now and I’ve never seen the option.
artists.spotify.com/
You can only pitch songs that are not yet released. This is why it’s so important to submit your release for distribution well ahead of your release date!
I tried pitching and have had no luck yet
Yay. So we went from elitist snob gate keepers at labels, to elitist snob gate keepers at every avenue of music release. I hate steaming services.
I have a question. I just released my very first single to CD Baby and am waiting on my release date in two weeks for them to curate a Spotify Artist page for me. The song is uploaded into my CD Baby dashboard but am I able to pitch it to a Spotify Editorial Playlist now or will I need to wait?
The "Pitch a Song" option does not exist on my page..
It's only for unreleased songs, under your UPCOMING tab
@@SMARTMUSICBUSINESSVIDEOS thank you :)
I’m releasing my first song through DistroKid next month. Would I still be able to pitch my unreleased song? Is there any way I can pitch it?
but then again there are thousands of artists, would they care to go to each of their links?
Be advised spotify doesn’t actually care about artists, so results may very😂
Yes bro so we really have to strategize!
@@SMARTMUSICBUSINESSVIDEOS absolutely!
this is way better than I expected, thanks
my track has already been out for 5 days. can i still pitch my song?
Nope, only unreleased songs at least 7 days before it drops
Did not expect to see Manafest when I clicked this video 😳
ha ha, amazing!
@@SMARTMUSICBUSINESSVIDEOS I love the No Plan B hoodie! I used to blast that song all day
6:27 The song might be old to you but ImNewToU
Have never landed on an editorial playlist 😢
Same and I did the same things he said in the video
But I also made 5k off music so I'm not complaining
Hey what’s your Spotify name? I saw you have an award and wanted to see what you made
They removed the description part of pitching a song also release radar is not that useful it usually only gets a few streams maybe 10 or so
