    It took me awhile growing up to realize that "Mom" and "Dad" were gendered. I just thought parent one = mom, parent 2 = dad. And that's why you only heard about single moms - because if there is only one parent, then they're the mom, regardless of their gender.

    • @sargemcgyver
      @sargemcgyver 7 лет назад +84

      That's a really interesting fact, actually, and it's great cause it reminds us nothing is gendered from the start :)

    • @kynicole
      @kynicole 7 лет назад +41

      makes sense why a kid would think that way seeing as though most single parents were the mother. not all. but most.
      you must've been a super receptive child.

      Amz Dud it isn't pronounced "MO" haha and you don't use that word when you are talking about a human mother, more like when you are meaning some kind of animal's mom 😂😂

    • @emmi3785
      @emmi3785 7 лет назад +7

      Jeah, human mother would be "äiti" in Finnish, but emo/emä is still the really old word for mother, which is nowadays used for animal moms only.

    • @Maijatus98
      @Maijatus98 7 лет назад +4

      Heli Lehto MO is the closest you can get when explaining the pronunciation to English speakers. Obviously they will say it with a U (emou) but if you spell it emo they'll say iimou. Can't really think of anything other than MO to describe how it's pronounced.

    My gf and I were just having this conversation the other day! I was always in "straight" relationships until I met my gf 3 years ago and fell in love. This was always one of my concerns because I grew up with the idea that i'd be "mom" and my future spouse would be "dad". As sad as it is, this was one thing that bothered me in the early stages of our relationship since I was so unfamiliar with a same-sex relationship. I'm so happy you two posted this because it really puts my mind at ease about my future with her. I gotta stop worrying bout what our kids will call us and just let it happen organically like you said! Thanks so much!

    We have a family with two dads and an almost four year old son. We have known him since infancy and it took us a long time to figure out who was Poppy and who was Daddy, as he used them interchangeably initially. Now there's no doubt in our minds who is who. With one of families with two moms, I remember during their orientation I stressed that they inform us of what we should listen for their two year old son to refer to them as. One mom is Mama and the other is Ima ("eemah" or mom in Hebrew), and I cannot tell you how essential it is to know these things. You may feel awkward asking for clarification, I know I have, but it is so important!

We have Mama (bio) and Mimi (non-bio). And indeed *all* in our lives call me Mimi now and I own that name. Only *I* will ever be Mimi to my wee boys. Now that is a special name.

    The family I babysit for use "Mom and Mady". Mady is technically their bio mom, but Mady carried their first-born. I love it and I think the clear distinction in the names has been super easy for the kids when communicating. Another family I sit for used "Mom and Momma".

We would never have made that up ourselves, and I think it's pretty great that she got to find what was comfortable for her. :)

    We never really enforced names, somehow she eventually just named us herself. I'm mommy and my wife is mom. Whenever anyone messes it up she's definitely quick to correct them and say, "No silly, THAT'S mommy!" and points to me. I remember though getting annoyed at people making such a huge deal about what she was going to call us. It would truly get on my nerves how many times people would ask that question and when I would answer, "I don't know yet, whatever she chooses to call us" they would proceed to try to "help us" find cute names like "mom 1 and mom 2" *insert eye roll here*. Thank you for your video!

    I asked my 4 year old step son if he wanted to call my Mum Nana or Nana Sue or Suzanne and he said no i'll call her Banana (which is nice because bananas are his favourite) we just got her a Nan birthday card and stuck extra letters on the front to spell Banana. My Mum was over the moon :)

    If I have kids with my future wife I'd like the kids to call me "Mami", "Ma" or "Mama", and my wife can decide what she wants to be called.
    It shouldn't be weird nowadays - or at all - to see same sex parents. Some kids/teenagers are actually hiding this part/"fact" about their family from others because of fear, shame or other possible issues that has been caused my social media or other influences. I hope that one day it won't be looked at as "shameful", weird or "damaging" to be a same sex couple who wants kids.

    I work at a summer camp and every one in a while I get a camper with parents of the same gender. It's really helpful when they introduce themselves as what their child calls them. That way in the unlikely event that a parent needs to be called, we know who we're talking to instead of just "mom" or "dad"

    Y'all are totally right about the kids will kind of just say what they want/can! My aunt isn't a lesbian but her husband died before the birth of her grandchildren so she is the nana and poppa so we decided she should be called nannapop but my baby cousins couldn't really say that so now she's just pop-pop lol

    My son named my mom "Mimi" and my grandmother "Emmy" and when I was a baby I used to call my aunt Lisa "Ada." 26 years later I still call her Ada. Sometimes kids do pick the names. But "mommy" and "daddy" is pretty common for straight couples.

    My parents aren't gay or anything, but I call my parents by their first names. Simple as that. They talk about each other in their names too. My mom will say: -is Bob home, not: -is dad home.

    Our kids are in their early 20's now, so we've meandered through a slew of "names". Regardless of what we intended, our first born called one of us Mommy, and the other a mangled version of her name (Sisa). In college the mangled childhood name sounded odd to him, so he started calling us both by our first names, which sounded odd to all of us, and now he has reverted (mostly) back to Mom & Sisa. Our daughter has always called us both Mommy or Mom, only correcting with a mangled version of our names (Rufie and Sisa) when the wrong "Mom" answers, a story she tells constantly when people ask HER what she calls us.
    Kudos for the direct clarity with teachers. Sadly when our kids were little that kind of openness, especially where we lived, was really hard and sometimes felt risky.

    This is relatable. I have a biological daughter from a previous relationship and she started calling my fiancé mama on her own. We did have to come to a point where she had to decide on her own who was who because she would interchange them and get upset if the wrong person answered. We also have to explain it to people sometimes and she will correct others. She is 4.

    When I was still developing, my grandparents decided that they didn't want to be called "grandma and grandpa" for whatever reason and they decided on something like Gram and Gramps. However, when I was first learning to talk I called them Gamma and Gepp because I couldn't pronounce things right, and then Gamma and Gepp just kind of stuck. I think they were quite pleased with how things turned out. Haha

    As a teacher, I can't imagine why people interacting with your kids wouldn't want to know this information. Like, how am I supposed to communicate with a child if I don't know the language they use to discuss the most important people/social support in their life?

    With our two littles we tried Mom and Mama as well. But for some reason our youngest called my wife 'Erma' (not even close to her real name). We just went with it and she became Erma to our youngest. Well, this past Christmas out of nowhere she started calling my wife Mom... and even though we have no preference as to what our kids call us, I think both my wife and I were sort of saddened for the 'Erma' phase to pass. We love your channel!

    I know nobody will read this, but this is my experience with lesbian moms.
    For me, one mom was always mom. The other I called mom-mom as a kid. Stupid I know, but that's how I differed. As I grew older, I just started calling them both mom. Just whoever was around I called mom, and if we got confused, I would just say "no, the other one!". It's different for everyone. To my friends, I refer to my moms as mom (insert first name), just so they can differentiate. It's awesome, I wouldn't trade anything for the love I have from my moms!

    Our kids were our foster kids and when we adopted them we asked them what they wanted to call us. They chose to use our first names. This confused some people, but we felt like you did. Whatever it is it needs to happen organically.

    I have to thank you because i've been so scared lately about my future, about my life and what is waiting for me, I've been asking myself if it is fair for two women or two man to have children, to have a family, I thought that maybe I should have limited my homosexuality, but now I realised that I don't have to, I can and deserve to be happy, to reach my goals and if one of them is to have a family, then this is what I'll do, thank you!❤

    So sweet! I'm still pretty young (20 years old) so it will be a while before my girlfriend and I have kids but we've definitely talked about this. My girlfriend is British so she would want to be "mummy" or "mum" or "mumma". We also want to raise our kids speaking both English & French and I'm American, so I think I would either go by "mom" or "maman" - "maman" would be easier to hear the difference, I think (as opposed to mom vs. mum).

    We are two moms with a beautiful 4 year old. She calls us Mommie and Moms. She is our granddaughter and started living with us at 5 months at first we were Innie and Outie, those are names we made up. At age 1 and a half she started calling me mommie and that was when our names changed to what she called us. We always wanted to be the grand parents but she needed that comfort of calling me mommie and I never once disagreed with it. We are her moms and nothing will change that in her eyes.
