Great Small Tree for Your Yard: Vitex, AKA Chaste Tree

If you're searching for the best small tree for your yard, look no further than the Vitex - also known as the Chaste tree, or Monk's Pepper (Vitex agnus-castus). I love this plant! The Vitex is a deciduous shrub that grows really quickly, and it bears clusters of really pretty, fragrant purple flowers in the summer time. You'll want to keep it pruned, as it tends to get a little leggy.

Fun fact: the Chaste tree is also called Monk's Pepper - apparently, monks used to eat it in order to help suppress desire!
It's a little too warm here in Zone 8 to grow lilac, so the Vitex is a nice replacement for that. It should be hardy in zones 6-9, it can take the heat. It's also a good pollinator, attracting many bees.

I have two of those trees. Planted them twenty years ago. We have them trained as trees. One purple bloom, one white bloom. We just got done cutting the old blooms because it will bloom again.
