Ka-Bar BK11 Becker Necker Knife Review (Part 1of2)

  • The Becker Necker is one of those rare things for knife collectors: a great blade at a cheap price.
Although marketed as a neck knife, the BK11 actually feels more suited as a small belt knife for general use. In fact when comparing the knife to more popular competitors like the Rat Cutlery RC-3, the BK11 is able to hold its own while still maintaining a reasonable price point. With a few small changes to the knife and its included accessories, I feel the Becker Necker would become a hit for affordable outdoor use knives.
    The Becker Necker features:
    - Full flat ground drop point blade design
    - 1095 Cro-Van Steel with Epoxy Coating
    - Overall length 6.75 inches (17.15 cm)
    - Blade length 3.25 inches (8.26 cm)
    - Weight: 2.4 ounces (68.04g)
    - HRC: 56-58
    - SHARP out of the Box
    - integrated bottle opener and wire breaker on butt of handle
    - Included: Glass-filled Nylon Sheath with lash point for paracord and is compatible with the Kabar TDI Belt Clip (sold separately approx $10-15)
    - Included: 7 feet (2.13 meters) of black 550 paracord
    - Retail: $54.69, available at Amazon.com for $35 with free shipping
    Things I would change:
    - Should offer the package with the TDI belt clip included to save overall cost
    - Should offer (cheap) handle scales for the knife for better grip
    - Eliminate the middle hump on the handle to make the knife more ergonomic
    - Loosen the retention on the sheath just a little bit

I work at Cutco, which markets Ka-Bar, and just bought this knife today with employee discount. I had a whole box of them to choose from and chose one that wasn't so hard to pull out of the sheath. Very nice. Starting to parachord wrap this baby right now.

To create a secondary method to retain the knife, I use a piece of thin bungee cord tied to the sheath and looped up to the wire cuter/bottle opener to hold the knife in the sheath.

An excellent review. For me... The lack of some sort of handle would be a problem. I have the BK2 and can confirm that the steel is outstanding.

Great review. I had planned on doing a review before I saw this, but you've covered almost everything about the BK11. The only things I'll be able to show differently is the belt clip attached to the sheath and Tomar's new grips made from micarta. Keep the videos coming.

FYI I bought a BK11 from amazon, it was a special model made for them?? It came with the sheath in desert sand (tan) color & comes with hardware to make it belt carry, it also has micarta scales & finaly the blade has partial serrations, all for just under $60.00 (no shipping costs if you have "Prime" ). The blade is VERY sharp, within just a few minutes of having it, one of our dog jumped on the couch and I ended up with a nasty cut on finger, it needed 2 stiches (to the bone) ouch. Great blade

I don't have the Izula but I reckon it would make a better neck knife since it's smaller. People rave about the ergonomics and warranty.
I think of the BK11 as more of a small belt knife.

@jumpthemap I have a smith and wesson necker that's about the same size and personally I think the size is fine, I might even want to make my own a little longer and thicker with a Scandi grind.

They should make grips for it but you could also just make your own and make them exactly how you'd want

You can buy a BK11 with scales and a tan sheath for around 60 buck. But, the blade is serrated.

When you place the knife in the sheath all the way, you're supposed to press on the corner in order to release it.

  • @williamsmith6
    @williamsmith6 10 лет назад

the edge of the knife makes contact with the sheath and each time it dulls the knife edge, put it in sharp and pull it out 12 times and it is really dull.

Could not help notice that your sheath (and in other vids on this knife) seems to have been designed for a Tanto tip type blade, the one I received from amazon had the correct shape/outline of the blade, I find this a bit odd?

I read that the sheath dulls the edge quickly because of the glass...that put me off of buying it, has anyone noticed that problem?

The sheath is NOT, "great as well". It is a piece of ''edge dulling garbage'' that I wouldn't give to my mother in law. Get on eBay and buy a nice leather one like it deserves because the knife itself is a gem! Nice table top review, by the way. Be safe.

not at all, the Becker Necker is produced by Kabar, a high quality knife brand, Mtech on the other hand is kind of sketchy, not a quality knife company. also there are many differences, the size of the knife for one, the MT-513 is 4.5" overall, that's more than 2 inches shorter than the Becker Necker at 6.75", which is a lot in a knife, with only 4.5" overall you have basically nothing to hold on to.

  • @PRIESTfx
    @PRIESTfx 12 лет назад

$35??? I just saw this on amazon for $60...the only difference was it now comes with handle plates like you suggested...but yah, $25 increase just for handle plates?!!! I think not. I WAS going to buy it until i just watched your review. Typical Ka-Bar...
