Awesome! These cars had class. Nothing against the Dynasty or Intrepid, but they never had a car with the ride quality of the Diplomat again.

I loved that car, it had class and the blue paint job was unreal. The only issue I had was coolant problems that I was told they solved 3 years later. But it was a great car otherwise

Great 👍 ! I remember these cars, my parents owned a 1976 Dodge Aspen in which the Diplomats and Caravelle were based on . The Diplomats were reliable and comfortable to drive. CHEERS 🍻..

Hi, I usually don't comment on RUclips videos often.. But I watched this one and the 2nd you posted later on.. I know this video is about 2 yrs old at this point but had to say you seem to give this car a lot of negative feedback.. I think Dodge/Chrysler was foolish to move away from these cars... I had 2 one was a 82 Grand Fury..It was a State Trooper car. I unfortunately only had it about 3 months before an idiot blew a Stop sign and T-boned me on the drivers door..spinning me 180* ..I walked away, sore for a while..The car did it's job and saved me... Police package Cars are built a bit different.. The frame or uni-body was reinforced..Everything had extra coolers on it..The alternator was over 225 amps (for lighting).. The a/c was ice cold..Chrysler was known for that..(Even Rolls Royce used their compressors..) If you still have the car and it needs a recharge..you may want to look into propane since you can't get R12..
I picked up a Dodge Diplomat a 1986 version. This one was a NYS State Trooper Chase car..Had a 4 barrel carb 318 It had limited slip rear, I don't know the gear ratios but 70mph was the limit for non drone driving in the higher rpms... It would go way faster, but it was built to get up and go 0-60+.. I would eat fox body mustangs all day..It was built to catch them..
At the time Every Law Enforcement agency used them local/state/ federal.. Taxis used them new and used..They were tanks and could take abuse... I can't see how Chrysler was losing money on them.. I did a few years in LE in NYC.. Driving those cars at speed down city streets with double parkers, navigating in traffic..They were the perfect size.. I got to drive an 89 throttle body version(Sgt's car)..I had it doing 120mph on the FDR Drive in the middle of the night going on a call (yeah 120 in NYC?.. When your friends are calling for back up and everyone else is out of service..You'd be amazed and what you can do) ..The city switched to Chevys..They were um..Crap boxes..huge in comparison..v6 FI.. At the time the City had supplied it's own gas to the Station houses..It was basically piss water..They were horrible cars..stripped down..the back of the front bench seat would break..We stuffed milk crates and baseball bats to hold them up..(it was better then walking a post) 1989-1991/2 square body..Then 92/3..round body Caprices I never drove but the where huge.. Fords didn't go well with us but Now almost everything is an SUV ..But who makes the Highway/trooper cars.. Dodge..RWD Chargers..Because it works...
Sorry for the story/rant ..But you found a really good car..I gave mine away to a car service with about 190k on it still running..Good Luck with it..

I love Dodge Diplomats, My friend was an Police Officer for28 years, he drove an 1986 Dodge Diplomat Police Cruiser at Illinois State Police around Chicagoland. I miss NYPD that rolled their Diplomats back in 80s/ early 90s

This was the quintessential cop car of the 1980s! Think about how tight that rear seat was. Subtract 2 inches for the steel cage. Now imagine you're a 1980's cop trying to stuff an uncooperative suspect into the back seat. Even though these were iconic cop cars for years...cops hated them.

Cops I knew loved them. They hated the early 90's Chevys because they said they were hard to see out of. Especially the the back window.

Chrysler version was the LeBaron ('77-'81), New Yorker ('82), New Yorker Fifth Avenue Edition ('83), and then the Fifth Avenue from '84 on. Yeah, a lot of name changes in the early '80's. And the Chrysler Fifth Avenue actually lasted until '89 along with the Dodge and Plymouth.

Yeah the M bodies kind of got hard to follow at times, I go into them a little more detailed in the actual edited review. This was just to show off my new project car.

Nothing wrong with a Diploma or Fifth Avenue. I have a 88 Gran Fury myself. Made WV to TX and back. Fuel economy is good for a Carbureted 318 Lean Burn. Considering pulling the carburetor version for a 1990 EFI 318

Just happened to catch it on Facebook marketplace. Was actually looking at the guy's '83 Mazda Pickup he had for sale, but it needed engine work. He also had this for sale it was running and driving great, so I jumped for it.

I look forward to the restoration. I'm glad these cars are getting some attention these days. Gonna policeify it? (Dog dishes, spotlight)

Nah if anything I may put an exhaust on it for shits and giggles, but I may keep it as it is as it's surprisingly quiet for a 32 year old V8 boat.

I would have to disagree with you in regards to the technology. They were like today's cars very much the same as what GM and Ford were building at the time. Look at the Ford crown victoria it was basically the same from 1979 to 1992 and look at the Chevrolet Caprice it was basically the same car from 1977 to 1991. Also the Chrysler was first the Lebaron then in 1982 became the Chrysler New Yorker and then later on was the Fifth Avenue.

Not sure why I'm getting this recommendation now, but I ain't complaining! Hey..let me clarify something you mentioned. At this time, MOPAR did weird stuff. In these same years, if you ordered a New Yorker, you got a way different car. If you ordered a 5th avenue package, you got the M body. I own three M bodies. 87 Gran Fury EX NYPD undercover, 86 5th Ave, and 85 5th avenue. Check them out on my channel, let's help grow our channels. Hit the subscribe button, you bet I hit yours. Thank you for your information on these M bodies. They are really terrific cars. Even with the hated electronic ignitions. Mine all run great! Hot and cold.
