- Take a relaxing 3 hour scenic driving tour through southwest Utah on 3 of Utah's wonderful scenic byways. We begin in the desert and drive through Zion National Park on Utah Route 9 (Zion Park Scenic Byway), then we make our way north on U.S. Route 89 (Mount Carmel Scenic Byway) up to Utah Route 14 (Markagunt High Plateau Scenic Byway) where we climb to almost 10,000' in elevation before dropping down into Cedar Canyon and into Cedar City. From there we head down into the Mojave Desert and the vibrant city of St. George, Utah, then from Hurricane, Utah to Springdale where our journey ends.
This drive was filmed during the month of May.

With so much verdure along this route, I'm hard pressed to consider this desert, unless one takes into account, the overall Summertime aridity of the greater province. Mojave? I thought that the Mojave, is a principally Californian province, with only bits and pieces of that in Arizona and Nevada. Otherwise, I'd consider the rest, of this region, as belonging to the general Coloradan Plateau and Mogollon Rim provinces--some Sonoran Desert in extreme southern Arizona Desert--the bulk of it in Mexico.
The Mojave definitely stretches up into southwest Utah into the St. George area. Zion isn’t in the Mojave, but with all the red rock, cacti, sand and the scorching arid summertime weather I’d say it qualifies as being a desert landscape. As you go north the climate changes and things become more green, especially in the mountains, although the entire region is still quite arid.
@@AdventureEveryDay Now we shall compare your forays in Arizona, Utah, Western Colorado, and New Mexico, with Death Valley. All of the foregoing, with exception of the latter, is extremely verdant. But, you're still WELL ADVISED to remain hydrated and sunscreened, as you may become seriously sick if you don't do so. I do believe that there have been Heat EMERGENCIES that have periodically shut down Death Valley NP, with the exception of the Lodges at Furnace Creek, where some tourists may have long-standing reservations to fulfill. They're then strictly advised to remain close-in to the facilities, until the Emergency breaks. Otherwise, Park Service evacuates in advance, to the best of their ability.
