Wow dude, you tought me more about VM's in 22 minutes than my teacher in a year.
Keep 'Em coming
Proxmox VE is an AWESOME product. I’m a long time VMWare VSphere professional and over the last few years I have been using proxmox since version 3.2 I think and it’s now my virtualisation solution of choice. I’ve deployed it in clusters of 16 nodes in our datacenters and in smaller HA set ups on customer sites, it’s fantastic!
More like this please. As someone who is just entering IT its great to watch these type of video and learn some stuff.
I've been using Proxmox for a few years. It's been absolutely amazing.
Just finished upgrading my home Prox server when I saw this. Seriously the flexibility you get out of using proxmox is great.
I love these more in depth and higher level reviews and tutorials from Wendell and Logan! Keep them coming!! Remember even Enterprise guys like a quick refresher or lighter take on this stuff! Moar stuff like this moar views!
Was toying around with Proxmox at work with a bunch of HP Z400s, Super easy todo the default setup, super easy to setup nodes.
Yes, please make more videos like this Wendell. I love the other videos but more tutorials for technical stuff like this would be awesome.
I demand more Wendel videos dropping the knowledge on us
Please continue this series, i love it. And i hope others will find if informative, and perhaps get into VM's and how it works and why it is so awesome. Keep it coming man, you do a great job of explaining how things work. Granted that a little bit of technical knowledge is required to understand it all, but if you want to understand this and perhaps become a sys admin you will gather the rest of the knowledge yourself.
Thank you Wendell and keep up the great work ( and also the rest of the Tek Syndicate Crew )
Thanks! Tutorial videos like this is the best. Better than the normal doom and gloom videos.
I didn't think i'd ever hear Wendell say "oops" legitimately hahaha
Also please do more videos like this. Wendell is incredibly knowledgeable !!
Awesome run down Wendell, cheers. Love to see more of this stuff in the future.
Wendell, this was great and really helpful. It would be cool to see more stuff like this, and maybe some networking videos. With all the tech videos you guys post I feel like I don't know much about other stuff like networking and servers, etc. Great job!
This was very good! Simple yet informative.
You actually typed 50 into the field, you said 40, but typed 50.
That's why it reported the size at 50.
would love to see more of these types of videos in the future
Like you said in the video, it's nice to play around in. As soon as you're trying to set this up in a serious business, you will get laughed at. VMWare pretty much is king over in the real IT world, because it's a lot more stable than these kinds of "home virtualisation" and takes a lot less overhead as well, if you set everything up correctly.
That said, KVM and OpenVZ are being used by VPS providers, but that's not comparable to this OS. Their systems are pretty customised so maximise performance on hardware and such.
researching about proxmox, thanks for the idea man!
By the way, when you were confused why it said 50GB, You said 40GB but typed 50GB when you made the VM.
Awesome! I'm actually converting my current 8350fx with 32GB of RAM to a Proxmox server
Hi Wendell great video.
ZOL is almost production ready, Proxmox + ZFS soon, finger's crossed!
I thought virtually (he,he) all virtualization software was based on XEN which is why they're free. The big bucks are charged for the management software/consoles for live migration back-ups etc.
More video's like these please.
Jon.
Ps I'm on Arch Linux, don't hate me.
Edit Proxmox VE 3.3
Uses HTLM instead of Java,
Firewalls for each VE.
2 Factor authentication for log ins.
AND Fanfare please ZFS Plugin!!
Wow, this is inspiring. Thanks. I am motivated to put ProxMox on one of my newer machines and buy one of those cheap hot-swap decks and plug in a few RAID HDDs and create my own video NAS. I don't think it would go as easy for me as for Wendall though.
I really enjoy your commentary, Wendell, great video!
Do you have an AIO cooler on your CPU and a separate AIO attached to your GPU? I've been trying to figure out if I want to do some light liquid cooling (CPU and single GPU, likely something like the Poseidon) but it looks like there's a steep cost curve after the AIO solutions. the H220-X is expandable and I was considering expanding that with some extra tubes and connectors to the GPU, but I find its side window to be really ugly, not sure what it's like to fill since it's horizontal, and not sure if I'd need to add an extra radiator to the loop.
I really like it when Wendell teaches things.
One request I have that I think many people here would agree with.
Every few months or so, Windows pisses me off to the point where I give Linux another try. But every time I try to learn Linux, I end up giving up. I mean, I can get it installed and do web browsing and other casual stuff. The things I like to do in Windows are quite a bit more under-the-hood, but when I get under Linux's hood, I don't know what I'm looking at. It's like a mechanic being used to typical cars, and then finding himself with a Tesla Model S in his shop. I just don't know what to do from that point.
I think it would be really cool for Wendell to give a Linux tutorial. Not an installation guide or anything, but a guide as to how Linux "works." Most of the guides I find either assume the reader is an idiot, or is an expert. There isn't any in between. The way Wendell teaches really caters to that in-between, the people who know basic stuff but want to learn more.
I had problems with using a flashdrive and proxmox once. If you get more-or-less random boot fails, try a CD/DVD + Drive.
Great video! I've been using proxmox myself on my server for over 2 years and it's working great!
Cool video, can't wait for the XenServer one.
yes, yes,YES !!!!!! Need more of this type vids>!!! TY Wendell
Loving the Wendell-cam
Great video. Proxmox looks really cool and I think it may end up on my next server build. I have a few questions about it but I'll leave those to the Tek Syndicate forums.
Very cool! Would love to see more videos on virtualization, currently learning this in my server class at school.
Did you use a GoPro in your forehead to record this video?
yes
Tek Syndicate i thought it might have been wendells new Retinal Implant, courtesy of google
john wrong
tried 4walled.cc?
john wrong
Wallhaven replaces Wallbase, but 4walled it good too if you don't mind the loss of good search and filter system.
Craaptonium Uranus Wallhaven is just alpha though!
I've also had good luck with Citrix XenServer. Only complaints are that it doesn't support as many operating systems as ESXi, and that XenServer doesn't offer a web interface. You have to use XenCenter (which is windows only). Otherwise you need to use openxenmanager or ssh to do everything (I generally just use SSH).
great video wendell are there any build videos coming soon?
I have no ideal what I just watched, but I like it!
Interesting video. Some things were a little over my head and I'll have to research a bit, but all in all good video. Keep up the good work.
First all, exceln!! Thank you!!
I have 3 questions.
1 - If I run a benckmar on a VM, It giveme 900 point. If a Shutdown one of them and run againg the benchmark. The result are 600point?
2 - Can I do this with 2 PC only?
3 - If ever PC has for example, 4Gb of RAM, Can I make a VM with 8Gb ?
ThankYou!!!
Nice video guys!! we want more !! :P
great introduction to Proxmox. would love some full virtualization as well
I love this videos, I wish I understood more than 50% of it
Hey man, i'm planning to install this on my home server to run a mediaserver (Plex, Sonarr and Radarr) and act as a backup server to write automatically files to my NAS. Is Proxmox good for this use or do you recommend other software?
Well this was almost useful, the KVM network setup was what i was trying to get more info on, unfortunately I can't get KVMs to work on Bridged just NAT... can you make a video on networking Proxmox VMs? That would be really super useful. Nice vid
I think you should do more Linux videos.
A couple things here that are out of date or just not completely correct. You say to use https because your browser is too stupid. You probably know this, but it's because the webserver isn't setup to forward requests from http to https. It's super simple to do, I don't know why this isn't default behavior.
Second, Proxmox supports ZFS now, and there was much rejoicing! It's the ZFS on Linux implementation, which I think uses fuse. It's not ideal, but not bad. Now you can ditch the hardware raid controller and setup ZFS RAIDZ.
thanks! i had been wanting to do this and now i have a step by step (by ppl i like and trust)! not like i needed it but its nice!
18:44 actually you typo'ed 50, I noticed lol
Maybe this is a dumb question, but don't protected mode operating systems prevent processes from interfering with or crashing each other? If so, then why do people say that putting applications in their own virtual machine will increase security, stability, etc.?
Awesome video Wendell. But in the future can you please reduce the camera shake in AE thanks
Guys, this is one of your best videos that i've seen so far. (And i've seen a lot) Please, do more stuff like this. Also, Wendell is an awesome teacher!. Debian rules! :D
does the 8350 have the best performance for the money for virtualization? what about the 9370, the 9590
and wouldnt we be limited to just 4 ram slots with an AMD desktop motherboard.
Great work, very informative, well presented
I like this video style tbh, maybe use of an external mic for the GoPro footage would be good for next time.
what happens when you have a back up on "local" and you press on "restore" does it overwrite the current running container? or does it create a new container based off of the backup?
This is a wicked video, great job keep up the good work
Awesome video, Wendell. Could you do an intro video for HTPC setups? I'm working with a Raspi and XBMC with an HDHomeRun, but it was such a pain in the neck to set up right.
Yes! I have a Win7-based HTPC with MediaPortal on it. One of those software that run fine after days of fiddling and cursing, and is practically impossible to ever upgrade. I haven't used it for a year or so, and this "hanging from a silk thread" feeling I get from my setup is one of the reasons for not wanting to touch it.
I'd like something more me-friendly :)
Something that just works, if there's such a thing.
yeeeeaaa !!!! just got my pfsense setup on proxmox....now i need to work on zfs, plex and transmission :)
+Evi4666 you will probably face two issues as i did and here are some tips that may save you some time:
1-when you create your vmbr1 for the WAN connection. reboot the host immediately so the changes apply (its written in a very tiny font at the bottom, they should change that to big red font for people to see)
2-the VM won't boot up, it will quit right after you power it on, this is related to the hard drive configuration, if you go to the VMs hard drive property and change the default (no cache) to any of the other cache options, it will boot. (you can also add another storage Directory and you will not have to change anything if you place the vm on the new storage) i have no clue why !!.
+Evi4666 mine is a home server: i7 920, 18GB RAM, SSD for OS and Two WD RED for ZFS mirror, GA-EX58-EXTREME mobo and two Realtek NICs.
ESXI is a great solution but my hardware is lacking VT-D so I won't be able to attach the physical hard drives to the freeNAS VM for the ZFS mirror and I can't use it as HTPC since no Desktop environment can be installed to ESXI so proxmox is perfect for me right now.
for your issue: try to install the minimal netinstall Debian goo.gl/NNfazr and then install proxmox goo.gl/YeKD9w this is what i did to avoid the 17GB stupid SWAP partition that proxmox creates...if you could boot your server to Debian you can install proxmox from its repos.
What is the benefits to having separate VM's to run each server? Rather then having one that has all of them installed onto it.
EG an exchange server and web site in one install vs having it on separate VM's
If you wait a while, the Openvz container download section will fill up with about a hundred items. Just make sure your Proxmox server has access to the internet.
Thank you for this video :) it helped a lot
I'm absolutely new to this topic. First time trying this, how do I handle the physical drives within proxmox? I mean if i need to add or remove a HD and vms are already installed. Any assistance will be much appreciated.
Shouldn't you avoid assigning multiple cores or CPUs on virtual machines because of symmetric multiprocessing? Therefore, only assigning multiple cores/CPUs if you are running applications on the VM that use more than one thread? Other than that, good introduction video to open-source virtualisation. It would be good to see the same sort of video but with XEN in the future :)
do you recommend Proxmox over vSphere or XenServer?
This was way over my head.
I heard Wendell say something about clustering. Would it be possible to use proxmox to create a Beowulf cluster?
holy smokes at the motionsicknesscamera Batman!
Keep it coming Wendell, love it!
I like the new first person style :D
Quick question. I am looking to build a system based on the 8350, can you give any figure on how many vm's /containers can be run simultaniously on your platform? Thank you for your video.
Proxmox is great. I currently have a box running my PfSense Firewall, Plex media server, DNS Server, Logstash Server and other random VMs. Performance is generally very good.
I'm usually reading an experimenting with new stuff so I really enjoy the ability to pop a new VM online to play with. If you break something just put a new one online.
Current home Proxmox server is:
i7 970
24gb of Dominator GT
5x 4tb Seagate HDDs
Quad Intel NIC
It would be nice if you can do an updated version of this Proxmox video for a gaming VM setup.
More videos for virtualization would be nice.
Can you guys recommend some HTPC builds, they are getting more popular and it will definitely generate a good audience.
Nice video. :) Would love to see one with XEN and KVM as well!
Please do cover more in virtualization.
I'm just glad Proxmox moved away from Java and started using NoVNC for the console it makes EVERYTHING so much easier (still like PuTTY for SSH though)
excuse my ignorance, but what do you actually use it for?
Wendell thank you for this! You shall put more content out, the Gods place praise upon thee.
Couldn't you have run freenas under proxmox and done a passthrough so that freenas had direct access and you could use zfs rather than going with the scsi card?
I hear you can move virtual machines between physical computers of different hardware and scale fast, with proxmox VE
correction
both IBM and LSI claims 128 drives to be supported
again you are mixing things
it can have 8 direct connected drives, but supports 128 drives
Your sounds after fallen USB Flash is Cute..
That was so awesome! Thank you very much and please do more :-D
What's the model of the RAID card? I've seen these OEM cards mentioned before and would like to grab one off eBay.
I prefer Fedora + qemu-kvm and virt-manager for my virtualization needs, though proxmox web UI is brilliant for people that don't want to mess around with the terminal.
I've also experienced some network issues with game servers while using KVM under Debian, that's why I prefer Fedora for virtualization. It's fast and clean.
Question, Could I still use the Debian installation-- as in install a basic GUI (Let's assume LXDE) then install a Browser like Chrome and use one physical monitor to run both the host and the Guest? My goal here is to achieve this on my Laptop.
When we gonna see some more build videos? I do so adore them.
This is cool. I like moar :)
I'm currently running a hacky version of ESXi. I don't dare upgrading it, because I had to hack in drivers for the very common LSI controller that I have. VMware is a terrible company to work with. And the VMFS crap filesystem has a couple of 1998-era restrictions that folks have been begging VMware to fix, but they won't. All in all, once ESXi is running, it's running like a kitten, but once you need to touch it somehow, you're gonna be pulling an all-nighter filled with some select religious curses.
And then there's the almost-not-terrible GUI that only runs on Windows and weighs several hundreds of MB's, and is excruciatingly slow.
That's why I like stuff like this. Grass *can* be greener :)
Awesome. More Please
This some good shit. Make more videos like this. Those cheap 2 minute videos of showing off a graphics card are wack.
Wow... Listening to you is like a fast information transfer directly to my brain. Do you do Kung Fu videos? :-)
thank you for this video.
just clears some of the info i was sifting thru
Another question: is it possible (in ProxMox) to share a GPU discrete card between?
i def would like to see more on this very interesting subject!!
This might come in handy for me, thanks!
great video
what you think about oracle vm virtualbox?
Wendel more "enterprice" tutorial/videos please for linux and virtualisation.
Listing to the part about the importance of having a RAID controller for production systems I thought about Solaris ZFS. Can ZFS be installed on ProxMox?
I researched this extensively before I built my Prox server and Unfortunately the two don't play along very well; it's possible, but not advisable and as far as I know when I was looking there wasn't much push to make it work.
What's the deal with your extra super wide screen monitor there? What's the resolution on it?
It would be great if the Proxmox window would be maximized so it would give a clearer view of what is happening. We don't care too much about the background desktop really :)
