  • In this video I show you how to receive SSTV images from the ISS using a cheap Baofeng radio and your smartphone.
Follow me on Twitter: / diyflixit
    I use:
    Baofeng UV-5R
    145MHz band pass filter: yu1lm.qrpradio....
    Yagi antenna: www.qsl.net/dk...
    Some SMA and BNC adaptors
    Robot36 app
    2.5mm to 3.5mm adaptor
3.5mm Y splitter for connecting speaker or headphones
3 to 4 pole adaptor for Samsung smartphone
I built this adaptor myself, do so at your own risk.
Tip of 3 pole conector to 100k resistor and over 10k resistor to ground (sleeve of 3 pole). Middle connection of resistors goes over 10nF or 100nF capacitor (value does not matter so much) to sleeve of 4 pole (that's the mic input of the phone) ground goes to ring next to sleeve.
Capacitor is decoupling any DC voltages, resistors give attenuation to signal.

Please post a link to construct that antenna with all the details. Thanks

There is a link in the description for the dimensions and positions of the antenna elements, for some pictures of my construction have a look at this tweet: twitter.com/DIYflixit/status/1139505453019336709

How are you using the audio jack on your phone. I can't seem to find out how to decode the pictures without blasting the beeps to another phone. Please help

This is how I built a newer version of this adaptor using the mic input that's why I have the two resistors to lower the signal. this works at least for my old Galaxy S4 mini. In addition I have a 3.5mm plug in parallel from the Bao so I also can listen to the signal.

Great. We need to change the frequency to accommodate Doppler shift. Right?

Never did that, for FM on 2m it is not that critical, on the 70cm band for the voice repeater on the ISS or other satellites it is important to adjust. Tuning in to satellites on SSB it is mandatory to constantly adjust on every band but then you need another receiver as the Baofeng and most handheld only do FM.

That filter looks so beautiful. Do you have any tricks to build your filter around capacitors you already have, or you order the capacitors specified by the filter design tool? I can only order components from China, which takes a lifetime to arrive.

I'm by no means an expert in filter design but it is not easy to design a filter meeting the desired frequencies and impedances that's why I only use designs by others who tested this before. That's unfortunate you can only order from china luckily I have my electronic parts store nearby or there is mouser and digikey.

@@FesixGermany thank you for your reply! Unfortunately, DigiKey costs 120 EUR and Mouser 80 EUR to ship to my country, whereas electronics stores are practically non-existent. I have ordered the Ham It Up upconverter, which has a noise source built in. I was thinking of utilizing that, in conjunction with an RTL-SDR to characterize filters. That way, I can improvise in on most things, including capacitors. I have seen *devttys0* twist a pair of magnet wire to form a capacitor. I'm going to give that a try. Another cool way of improvising microwave filters is to use copper tape and cut it to shape to form strip-line filters. Anyways, enough babbling from my side. Have a nice evening!

For that you need to know filter design. LC, RC filters. But remember this is VHF

Could I use an old Satellite Dish to convert it to a antenna for example, get images from ISS through SSTV?

    • @FesixGermany
      @FesixGermany  5 лет назад

No this wouldnt work because the frequency is way different, the 2m Band where the ISS is transmitting is at 145,8MHz whereas satellites communicate at more than 1GHz or even more than 10GHz.

@@FesixGermany Alright, thank you for the info! I have 2 leftover antennas that were used for TV and 1 satellite dish, would you know any uses for them? Except for watching TV ofcourse, not really interested in that. But I have lately had an interest in radio stuff, would they be useful at all?

I assume you are talking of a yagi antenna? I don't really know what frequency it is designed for but you can measure the length of the longest element of the antenna as these normally are half wave dipoles, multiply it by two and divide it by 0,95 to get the full wavelength (0,95 is what's called the correction factor and depends on the thickness of the element but 0,95 is common for a rough calculation). Then you can calculate for what frequency it is designed for roughly.
You could use the dish and an LNB together with an SDR to listen to Es'Hail 2 satellite (also called AMSAT QO-100). Normally the LNBs downconvert to around 700MHz.

@@FesixGermany Yeah, there was an Yagi antenna. I also got info on some stuff, I got recommended "NooElec NESDR" to buy, from the info I got it is pretty okay for beginner, also it comes with 3 antennas which is good, I guess. Also I got told that this would be enough to get some sort of connection with ISS when they're broadcasting SSTV. Probrably not mint connection, but if I even get a half image, or even very bad quality I would be over the moon haha.

Yes these are not bad, I started with these cheap RTL SDR sticks, a colleague of mine has one NooElec SDR and with the bandpass shown in the video he is able to get full SSTV images.
