  • Phil Lynott chats to Gay Byrne about love, marriage, children and moving back to Dublin.
Suited and booted in a dazzling cream “tin of fruit”, Gay Byrne introduces Phil Lynott as a guest on ‘The Late Late Show’ describing him as
    All show biz and snazz
Phil has recently moved to Howth in north county Dublin and talks to Gay about missing Ireland when he’s away.
If I don’t get back to Dublin within three months, then I really to suffer from homesickness.
On his marriage to Caroline Crowther in 1980 he says
It’s made me faithful to one woman
Phil also tells Gay about finding fame and how his life has now changed since the early days of Thin Lizzy.
When Thin Lizzy started I had a bit of a wild boy image.
Phil explains that his name is being linked with a number of acting roles and he may have the opportunity to play one of his heroes Jimi Hendrix.
He showed to me that a black fella could be the front of a band and like, be completely respected for what he did.
This episode of ‘The Late Late Show’ was broadcast on 18 April 1981.

Shortly after my Dad’s death (2013) I wrote to Philomena to tell her of my father’s (and my) appreciation of her son’s music. She took the time, wrote me back, sent me some cool Phil/Lizzy stuff and invited me to the home for a visit. Sadly, I never made good on the invite. Thanks for posting this. Surprised he didn’t compare himself to a pint of Guinness at the start ; )

That's so cool that you remember this. This is the first time I'd seen an interview with him & am very touched at what a gentle soul he was. I just learned he died 5 yrs after this interview. I had hoped he'd have a longer life to enjoy his success & his family. RIP Phil.

What a creepy racist comments to start the interview about the contrast of the white suit. Phil let it roll off like I'm sure he has done a million times before. Truly a gentleman who deserved better from an interviewer. I am a bass player and Phil is one of the few that I have major trouble trying to play his stuff. To sing and play those awesome riffs is tough. What a talented guy, I wish he would have stuck around a bit longer. Thanks for posting this.

Not really... It was a compliment, we do it for anyone, white people in black suits is a contrast. You're reading way too much into it.. this is pure Irish culture, so you sound anti irish

Also Philip knew the presenter Gay Byrne very well and appeared on the show several times. NO racist intentions from Gay.

True, but no one can judge if they haven't been addicted to opioids, that shit comes before anything unfortunately, also he had done enough drugs to contract septicemia anyway there was no saving Phil unfortunately
