Great info, hey Mark, I have a situation, I have several content writer, some of them want to document and provide a feedback to our subjects which are potential customer. It is an online radio/online blog. I know it is important to portrait the truth at all time but, it wouldn't that create also a conflict of interest in this case between the radio and the potential customer?

I came here originally to practise my Gregg shorthand on you. I love listening to RUclipsrs and simultaneously dictating their sermons.
The reason why students plagiarise is mostly because they suffer from Writer's Block. I used to suffer that for years, until I tried sentence-composing approach by authors Donald and Jenny Killgallon. That helped hugely.
Writer's Block is a handicap. I was years fighting hard against it and resisting plagiarism. I was determined to win a talent for writing the hard way and fight for it by honesty. I didn't believe in plagiarism, as I thought it only encourages laziness. The books on sentence composing approach had helped me enormously.

    Hello Mr. Grabowski sir.
Just wanted to say that I am a HUGE fan of your videos. I've been watching them for quite some time now. They're inspiring to me and I think your student are fortunate to have you.
I am not formally educated (or a student) myself and CERTAINLY no expert or authority on Journalistic Matters, but I've got to say that much of these rules SEEM like they should just sort of go without saying you know?
I hope that doesn't offend you, or seem like I'm attempting to detract in any way from the obvious complexities of your craft, or role as educator. (Not my intent. )
It just seemed like it should be obvious to students not to steal someone else's work, or make things up to elevate readership.
Either way though DARN GOOD VIDEO as always buddy and keep up the good work.
    Ty. For your service.

Thanks for the feedback. You are correct that this stuff should be obvious; it's not really an ethical dilemma, but rather journalists choosing to do wrong. That said, I find myself regularly dealing with students plagiarizing and fabricating in my classes, so I think it's necessary to cover these basics in an intro to journalism course.

When you say your student rewrote the press release, part of learning to write is taking information , condensing it, and rewriting it, so therefore he did not plagerize.
When you say people are fabricating, include *all quotes without actual named person as to who said it as a source*, if they use it but name no source then it is unethical, and must be considered as if fabricated. If the person can not say it on record, using their own name, and know or be told, that it carries the responsibility and risk of even a court hearing or trial over it, then if the so-called journalist does not advise them of that before quoting them on record, and if they won't go on record, then no one should use anything they say in an article, no one should quote them without a source or name for who said it, and any journalist that does and not state this fact to them ,that they will be named and it will potentially have consequences for going on the record, then a journalist should not print it.
No journalist has ethics, if they refuse to name source, so that it can, and should if need be, then challenged in court, if slander or libel and defamation occurs from it ,so if you had any ethics lessons included in your curriculum then you should teach your students that it is not acceptable in any article to leave a so-called source unnamed.
If anyone leaves a source unnamed they have no credibility at all.
If the student writes an op-ed, it is just that, an opinion, and therefore if she writes it honestly, then so be it, if she can not write it and tell the truth then she should not write it, but never write anything she is not connected to or is knowledgeable about as it will be a terrible article to read, anything the person does not know about then they should not write about.
If she wanted to write about the show then teach her to compare and contrast perspective and write from her personal vantage point and then contrast it in a style of discourse and debate and let her make argument about why she feels the vantage point she holds or a insiders perspective from a different view is or is not better and have her show proof for why she feels the shows perspective is wrong.
Teach them logic and reasoning and argument.
No reason to avoid that fact, her ideas will always be subjective, so let her or others learn to compare and contrast with the objective view.
It is healthy, not something you should teach them to avoid.
Learning to see from someone else's viewpoint is a part of life and helps learn sympathy, empathy and compassion and stops narcissism .

Thanks for the feedback. As I mentioned in the video, the entire press release was copied (without attributing or quoting the author) and only a couple words were changed, so that is, in fact, plagiarism. Anonymous sources, media law, writing good op-eds, etc. are all covered in other lectures. Ethics is also covered in depth. This is just a short video on major/common journalism sins that students should avoid.
