Journalism should strive for truth. Empathy is subjective and in no way can anyone truly know what someone else feels. People can only know what they feel and people do that poorly at best
Journalists should strive for honesty, not truth. Truth cannot be obtained, we're all subjective and see only the perspectives we see. We're blind to our blind spots. I fear striving for truth leads many journalists to believe they can obtain truth, and are reporting on it. Journalists need to be more aware of how subjective they actually are. Striving for honesty is better, as it's a direct appeal to not twist and spin, not even for a good cause, or what they believe is a greater truth.
@@vegasecurea no, that's a dangerous idea. Science, given time, can converge on objective truth. Journalism doesn't have the time nor the proper process. Any journalist believing he's objective is dangerous. A journalist will only know what he subjectively experiences, and have no way of knowing what facts or perspectives he's missing. Honesty and thorough work is the best we can hope for.
Although my ability to understand English has some limit, I can not keep my tear falling when I was in your talk, your voice, your felling. I am living in a peaceful country. However, I am being in a status of …felling to be useless as a human. Day by day, I see people around me to spent their time left after their jobs to watch the news about war, seems as it is a kind of entertainment. In some recent days, just going online, I would be surrounded by news about riots, wars, events that cause division and disunity. I wonder if there is a voice calling for unity, love, compassion and sharing at this time. And then I saw the title of your ted talk. I started listening to it with the hope that this might be the voice I was looking for. And then I did cry with you. So, I am writing to you, Bel, to say how grateful I am to you, and how much I admire you for what you are doing. And that please spread this anti-violence voice to every country, every people. The Earth needs you.

So many bots in the comment section, or people incapable of understanding the point. "that journalists should inject their own emotion and interpretation".."Journalism should strive for truth. Empathy is subjective" is not what she is saying in any way. The point is that in order to bring facts to both sides in a way where BOTH sides will care and listen, is you must portray the lived reality FROM BOTH SIDES WITH EMPATHY. Someone once said you must empathize with the other side before someone will even begin to listen to you in an argument
This ideology, that journalists should inject their own emotion and interpretation into their reports, goes against the principles of ethical journalism. She's correct that modern journalists concoct stories for clicks, but her solution is wrong. Journalism needs to return to truthfulness and accuracy, independence from external influence, impartiality, and they should be held accountable for their actions.
Yes, but there are multiple ways to present the facts, as there are more perspectives. As some on the Pro-Palestinian side say, "one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter."
@@fopdoodler9427totally agree with this view, what is “fact” when it comes to this type of journalism when biases exist through an individuals upbringing and perception of the world? We all have our own biases because we all experienced the world differently from the moment we started existing. Even in science things are referred to as a theory rather than fact because inherently there could always be a differing view, it’s just not been discovered or viewed from that way yet doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
That's a very simplistic way of looking at it. But in no way did she advocate for the contrary. All she's saying that there are many fact during a war conflict, and focusing on what's flashy and bombastic is the wrong way of showing the tragedy of it. Because it turns real misery and suffering into a Hollywood action movie.

@@nevarran I’m taking about 2:45, where she gets offended by criticism of the media, without addressing any of the very real arguments against it, most prominently its ability to create narratives and push agendas (I.E. manufacturing consent). In fact not only is she oblivious to this, she actively plays into it by advocating for an agenda of ‘empathy’ over ‘violence’, whatever that means. Of course everyone wants empathy in theory, but who we are empathic towards and how we choose to tell their stories plays an important role in how these conflicts get interpreted. That’s why news media should focus on reporting the objective facts, instead of pushing ideological agendas
I believe most people don’t actually care about being empathetic and compassionate, they just care about being perceived as compassionate. There are plenty of armed conflicts all over the world, yet this person chooses to talk about Ukraine and Gaza, why? Because those are topical issues that it pays to be seen as being on the ‘right’ side of. I doubt she really cares about either conflict, any more than she cares about the conflicts in Myanmar or Sudan. She spent 15 minutes and all she talked about was herself and ‘muh patriarchy’, she’s the kind of shallow person who looks at these horrific conflicts and asks ‘how can I make this about me?’

It is very difficult to proceed truth as peoples appetites are against it. The bang-bang-isation of war, the same can be said about human sexuality. How many bang bang you can see on the internet, as love and tenderness are reduced to a feeling for the extreme. There is also bang-bang-isation in food industry and food commercials. How many commercials are exploiting a brief moment of pleasure, for sugar and fat, and there is no real satisfaction for eating healthy. You can go on
