- From the ashes... a new beginning for the X-Men following the end of the Krakoa Era. X-Men 1 by Jed MacKay and Ryan Stegman fail to do so IMHO. Check out my review and give me your thoughts in the comments.

Doesn’t even look like cyclops more like a teen cyclops.
I thought it was that Atom Children Cyclops.
Wolverine, too.
The artist said he gets to looking more like an adult as the issues go on because people complained
Yessss! Lmao but then I was like well I suppose Cyclops would be like 90+ years old in real time since his debut so I guess it’s fine to sorta reconstruct their appearance based on each artist’s taste?
@@carlosdelacueva2713 he'd be 70+, actually. They were teens in the first issue, in 1964, which was 60 years ago. It's okay - maths are hard.
One of the things I've always liked about you is your honesty. Some channels will shill no matter what and others are outrage bait. 👍
Absolutely. I’ve been following Gem from the start, he is exactly the same with the omnibus and oversized collections. When they changed the Marvel spine design, Gem was one of the very very few channels who called Marvel out.
May be my jumping off point, I've followed everything Krakoa, ups and downs...
Tom Brevoort has been with marvel since 1989 and an editor since 2007. His big bugs were New Avengers with Brian Bendis and Civil War
I’ll be honest -I’m out on any new X-Men. Everything important happened in Uncanny 155-300, they just rehash classics like Mutant Massacre. How is Juggernaut an X-Man for real?
Wow, it's been a while since we got one of these types of reviews lol
My wife is a big X-Men fan so I skimmed it. I think it starts "X months later" so maybe all will be explained over time. I DO want to check out the Uncanny re-launch next month.
Lot of pink/purple colouring, which you see a lot of nowadays, not a fan. I’m sure Kid Omega will be popular with zoomers, since he looks like them with the pink hair and thick black glasses.
Im with u....they not selling me at all right now
First, I need to finish the House/Powers stuff. I just finished Reign of X with the Hellfire Gala. Next is Trial of X.
damn all the sudden people love krakoa 😂😂😂
I liked HOX/POX 🤷♂️
@@GemMintCollectibles oh I loved that shit bro, but people were begging them to leave the island and just because people have an attachment to whatever doesn’t mean that it should be bashed just because
Nothing about it makes me want to even try reading it lol
What a big disappointment. I was hyped for the new #1s now I might drop them all from my pull list after only one issue.
The Krakoa Event had many teams going to many places and I think this event should have pulled the reigns back... They should have "started over" with a single X-Men location/base and get back to the core values of the X-Men, while still finding a modern story.... I also think that a change of the guard should come in one of these events in the near future to less used X-Men; maybe not to take over, but to be obviously on the path to becoming the next leaders, but sadly I don't see that happening.
Stegman is referencing Chris Bachalo. This looks like pages by Bachalo
He did the same for his venom run..
I was definitely disappointed. I didn't hate it. I'll probably start waiting on the trade.
Feels to me like a filler arc until the MCU X-Men come out, then the comic will follow whatever the movies set up 😢
I read the initial HOX/POX tpb when that came out. Liked it a lot, but just kinda fell off not long after that because there was just too much dang stuff coming out (that and Hickman leaving didn't help). I bought this hoping it'd be a nice jumping on point again and felt so lost. Nothing really clicked with me and some characters didn't feel like themselves. Also, didn't Beast turn heel a while ago?
I’m actually a brand new reader into X-Men and I wasn’t confused at all. I actually love the art style that’s actually why I started reading it. Not the biggest fan of the design of beast though and it’s not the best thing I’ve ever read ether but I still actually enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to reading more and reading other X-Men comics now
The Chris Clairmont/Jim Lee and Marc Silvestri days were the top form. Late 1980's-early 1990s golden age.
Interior looks better than that cover.
Unfortunately true
Even though I like juggernaut. I wished they used Colossus instead. Also have 1 telepath on the team instead of 2. If I remember correctly tempo was introduced in one of the x men run that took place right after schism. But tempo really didn't have any presents or role during kroka era run.
I had so little hope with this new start. Seems like Brevoort wasn't lying where he was giving us more of the same.no matter how much people hate it.
I’m just coming into it now I dug it, excited to see where issue 2 goes
This team just feels so thrown together at random. I feel like Uncanny X-Men will be a much better book.
Thers still gonna be uncanny xmen from gail simone. Hickmans xmen was awesome tho.
Did you custom build your shelving? If not any insight?
Yes, but just hired a contractor.
I kept forgetting Stegman was the artist due to the quality. They should've told this story through the POV of that sheriff instead of her just dropping by and ultimately making the story feel disjointed. Got vibes of that last season of True Detective with Jodie Foster, which isn't good, the set up of the mysteries were cool but the payoffs were trash.
It’s trying too hard to be the last air bender 9:40 art style and costume for police chief lady
I think it was "okay", i dont think they should've ended the krakoa era
For me, when it's comes to X-Men, the teams structures have to be balanced somewhat. Jim Lee/Chris Claremont's launch was the perfect set up imo, Blue & Gold Squads.
I don't like any of the new X-teams they've cobbled together. I'll be sitting out this reboot
Yes! Feels just like a mash up of characters
@@GemMintCollectibles 100%, and it does remind me of Grant Morrison's New Xmen era but that time felt really well balanced between squad and school
Goth Beast! And when did Magneto raid the Joker's wardrobe?
Thank you/great video as always.
The previews looked uninspired.
More Xcrap from Marvel surprise surprise sure hope they have a picnic event next... 😂
Like Stedman but his juggernaut is a big letdown
Totally on board with your take on it! Love that you kept it honest with it! If you didn’t like then you didn’t like It! Some people just pick on it and say the love it for small things and don’t want say anything negative about it, which I don’t understand why people are like that these days if it’s not good it’s not good and if it’s good it’s good! Keep it real!!!!
Temper or tempest was from aarons wolverine and the xmen as well as like schism etc
Read both of those and still don’t remember
Nothing about this issue clicked with me. It's unfortunate.
Magneto in the Mobius Chair lol
I appreciate this honest review as a comic reader yourself! It may appeal to some and not so much to others! 📚 I pick up what feels like an event! 🌌 Feels like something i might browse then see for a while. Have you done a review of A v X? That had so many writers and artists collab'ing and yet if felt like it went ahead of the readers to fully immerse and yet it's still compelling! And that visual depiction and characterization of Juggernaut makes him seem like Jughead-naut or the Archie's friend Moose of this X-Men iteration. And a skinny beast that the movies never get right in proportion?
That was the 1sr event I read getting back into comics. I’m sure I’ve done an overview on the omnibus when that came out. But I haven’t read it since it came out in single issues. I loved it though.
@GemMintCollectibles I read it in digital as a whole, and it was surprising, and yet it outpaced me and still does! Unlike Age of Apocalypse or New/Uncanny X-Men, or No Surrender/No Road Home, Ultron/Civil War, House of M, it went to 100 in a split second! And you realize a ton of writers in a time crunch were involved and picked up the baton at each stage. Felt like big event Hollywood sequels that went big for bigness! Almost, almost like big and forgettable popcorn fare Transformers vs. the sticking memorable build-up of MCU's Infinity saga. I gotta read it again!
Did you sell Hush Superman. I see the LBS one in the background
Sorry you were not a fan. I loved it. As a novice X-Men fan, I think it’s a great jumping on point. It felt like a TV pilot episode.
If you’re a novice fan of course you like it, you haven’t actually read the good stories, so you don’t know any better.
@@InfamyOrDeath-__- You said exactly what I was thinking. Ignorance is bliss. I just hope that new X-Men fans are curious enough to check out the classic stories that defined the franchise and made it a success in the first place. The modern stuff doesn't hold a candle to it.
After I read the preview. I cancelled them all but the Wolverine. I know it will make me cry at how bad it will be.
But why is Xorn casually standing outside in cold snow-covered Alaska with an unzipped jacket and no shirt?
Leaving Krakoa (presumably for synergy with the MCU) was such a mistake
Lolllll
They should have left krakoa 3 years ago 😂
Krakoa sucked.Worst Era ever.
Sounds like I need to get caught up before trying to jump into this one
I gave up on X-men a while back….i mean X-men go to dinner? I’ll pass for a while
I read it it was meh
It was a good jumping off point. I was excited for this new X-Men series, but it just didn’t do it for me. The art and story.. idk it just didn’t hit.
this was my first x-men comic and although i was kinda confused by certain things, i actually really liked it and gonna keep reading it. also a big jed mackay fan.
Marvel doesn’t really do jumping on points too well. There’s always a ton of history that gets referenced.
I will say this issue felt like just setting up the new status quo for these characters. It didn’t blow me away, but I’m going to give it at least a half dozen issues or so before passing final judgement
Can you do the uncanny x-force omnibus review ?
I covered a bunch of times on the channel. Should be able to find one on a search. Last time I covered with every X-men spin off video
Gem Mint, I've been watching since you were bald and beefy. I'm not a collector, but love your content. ❤
Completely agree. Not the Jed and Ryan that I know.
They have trouble finding cyclops voice in this issue, treating Juggernaut as a newbie is bothersome, he’s been on the team a long while now. It is weak start
Yeah, I don't read NEW Marvel anymore. I stopped years ago, around 2017-2018?
To me, it was not great but… it was not bad. It was neutral. Like they are laying down a foundation. Tbh the bonus end scene with the round table save it a bit for me. It made me feel what comics did back in the day. Left on a cliffhanger and wondering who and what’s this about?.. I kinda had to separate the X-men I grew up reading with reading this. I’ll give it a chance. But that’s just my opinion.
I’d give it a 3/10. There were some interesting seeds planted with the A.I. Mutant villains that looked like AIM, but the art was very cluttered and some of the characters felt off. I feel like a Scott got a better scene in Phoenix #1 where he seemed more like himself and didn’t look 24 years old.
I wonder why you stopped reviewing Ultimate Spider-Man by Hickman!
Just busy. Looking forward to getting caught up though
Lack luster return to form reset sadly. They should have kept the Krakoan age going. It gave the X-men series some much need breath of fresh air. Great review. Cheers Gem.
I think that there is only so many stories you can tell with the X-Men over how many decades? I think HOX/POX is not just a great modern X-Men story but also one that can't be topped with where the mutants can be taken after; which is why the Krakoa era fell on itself. I honestly feel like this is just a rushed reboot that creators are rushing out to jump on the 97 hype and MCU X-Men buzz with Deadpool 3!
This is what happens when you don’t fire the same “creative” team that ran the last initiative in the ground! I say “creative” because these fools don’t have an original idea in any of their heads if it killed them. Instead it’s “I know! Let’s put them in the blue and yellow uniforms! That’ll get the fans back!” God forbid they actually tell a good and fun story!
I actually like the dynamic of the base being a former sentinel factory that they reclaimed. The chief was talking about the town losing their jobs but like damn those jobs were building genocide weapons, sorry folks and your welcome for saving your town too. I liked the issue but I'm with you on the team being a bit random and dysfunctional so far.
I understand the sympathies. Personally exceptional X-Men is the only one weak looking one too me.. other book im excited for a fresh start with new dangers and genetic perils
Magik cover is hot
Each of the x-books is revisiting past runs...this one is new x-men and the other main x-book is refrencing the outback era..
Ive liked some jed mckay work, but eith his avengers being atrocious i had little hope for this. Looking forwars to seeing where it goes though. Ive stuck around through much worse.
Sounds like you weren't really into it. I believe their base is actually a former Sentinel factory. I thought that was a cool wrinkle.
Yeah isnt Stegmans best, feels like he phoned this one in. KIB and Vanish art are leagues ahead of this. Weird.
great vid here. you know what this book came across as ? like you were reading a Image comic from the 90's in particular the Newmen... ryan style is almost todd nauck-ish here as well.. But you know what? this was ( ok ? ) ....
OK Gem. You are not way off base. I was excited to see the X-Men back. But, that is not what we got. No excitement in the book. For a new #1 this was not very good. I agree with all your thoughts on this issue. I hope this and other X titles can make X-Men worth is again. But for now it is not looking good.
Jed McKay writes like 12 books. Somethings gotta give. How much can you ask of one writer. Yeah this doesn’t look exciting after the Krakoa era
Hope Jed gets paid well! He is one of the only few talented writers they have on their staff.
Tom former avengers editor
Looks lame, but I'm not surprised. Any X-Men roster with Quentin Quire is going to be a miss for me, I hate that character. (I know you said you like him, but I can't stand him outside of the Grant Morrison era).
Tom Breevort has been with Marvel for decades- afaik he was the editor on Avengers since the Kurt Busiek/George Perez era. Stegman's art looked better on Spider-Man, Venom, Absolute Carnage, etc. This is rough.
The problem is Breevort, shuffling around the editors isn’t going to do squat, they all need to go & get some new editors, they’re 99% to blame for everything wrong in comics today.
@@InfamyOrDeath-__- completely agree!
I loved it and I'm sold on this new series. For all of you who might've hated it, good news for you all, there like 6 different x-men themed books to chose from lol
But the bad news is that they most likely all suck haha.
If you have to pick through 6 different series to find a good series then that's a very huge problem
@YJSho_Nuff_ that would be a problem but we still don't know that do we? This is just the first one.
@@InfamyOrDeath-__- goofy ass attitude bruh
🎯Can we give things time breathe and grow??? We’ve all read thousands of comics, we are in our 40’s, why are you guys still thinking you are going to fall in one with one single issue??? 1:44 Gem, when you read Jim Lee you were a kid you will never have that type of experience with X-MEN ever again. Can we at least find out what something is building to before we start making hate videos?
It’s not a hate video. It’s just a review. My point is, they didn’t even try to make something exciting and groundbreaking, it’s just more of the same.
Qué maravilla 🙌🙌🙌
Yeah, not a big fan of this one. Look out for The Uncanny X-men #1 coming out in August. It Looks really good.
Great review.
Beevort will destroy this line.. he’s doing everything to piss over all it..
The artwork looks okay but not as engaging as Immonen or Laraz talent.
Try the Ghostmacine world Geiger Rook Exodus and Redcoat. Image is where it’s at. Marvel 👎
I did read the 1st issue of all those
I thought I was the only one that didn't like iT, so I scanned other channels to get reviews and it seems nobody wants to say iT was bad except for you and me🤣, the other's are trying to be optimistic or very generous because they hated the KRAKOA era so much, but Dude THiS was not good.🤨
The real issue is they have a serious lack of imagination in the story telling.
I love it. Nuff said!
IMO, X-men have always had long runs of boring repetitive storylines with a bunch of great stories spread throughout the decades.
Astonishing x-men is just🔥
2It just feels like whatever". Excatly my feeling.
I was not expecting something at the level of HoX/Pox, but still, that first issue was a huge let down. It is just boring :/
I cut off around 2016 and Krakoa started good then they ran Hickman off. And it went absolutely nowhere and brought on horrible writers with no real direction. Also pushed characters and ideas that no one was interested in. Thats all ill say on that but this along with the other titles do not impress. Going with to many titles, this isnt the 90s with multiple teams that everyone cares about. And most stories are not about the characters but the writers own agendas which result in boring non character driven books. And what happened to Stegman?
Picked this up from my LCS because it’s Xmen 1 right!! Didn’t enjoy it. Art work was sketchy. I what’s going on with beast!! Anyway didn’t feel
It. On a positive Ultimates is rad so get that instead
Told you yesterday on WN. The_hawk_tuah aka Zemog92 lol but stegmans art was weak and his portrayal of cyclops beast and wolverine were weird. Jed McKay has been miss miss lately
Thought of you the whole time… like yup, cyclops and beast do not look good
@@GemMintCollectiblesI’m subbed to this but man, yea I trust your review and will pry drop it. X-men is too much again
It's not great but it is okay.
The recent wolverine run was insanely good the last arc with wolverine vs sabertooth was very cool!
Really?? The unused adamantium suit though??
Krakoa Era ruined the X-Men to me. All they are killers now and no more heroes. I just can't bring myslef to read another new X book again. I will follow X-Men 97 only now.
It was a let down for sure. Didn’t like the art or story. You’re right on with all your critiques.
Nailed it 👊🏼
This issue was not great 😕
I'm starting to think this issue is bad because of Marvel Editorial. Jed isn't the best writer of all time but he's written better issues than this, same goes for Stegman's art he's done better. IMO leadership at Marvel hasn't been good enough to direct their talent towards memorable runs for over a decade. There are good runs here and there but I bet tons of good ideas have been shot down in favor of Marvel leadership wanting to keep things their way which is rarely good for us readers at this point. I don't think anyone would choose to start their own X-men run without a real fresh beginning. Those words on this trade dress are just a cash grab evoking nostalgia from previous generations when you actually used to get what was written on the cover in the actual book. I'm giving X-men, Uncanny and Wolverine 3 issues to win me over tops. I think everyone else should do the same. Marvel editorial and their leadership need to shove their ideas up their ass and stop thinking they know what's best for these legendary comic book characters when it's been clear for a long time now that they don't know shit. Edit the books, stop trying to control the narrative, y'all can't handle it. I wasn't a fan of Hickman's run but it's pretty clear they fucked up his vision so I say they are the problem.
Yeah, X-Men is kind of mid at this point. I'll give this a shot, but I don't have high hopes.
You can't duplicates the success and creativity of UXM 129-394.
Man Gem. You hit this one right on the head. Jumping on point. Maybe jump on the book to put it out of its misery. Not a good book at all. I hope #2 is better. But, I don't think it will be.
2:11 yeah I dislike the art
