This week we're taking a look at the main bass riff from the song Walk On The Wild Side by Lou Reed. The bass line is originally played by the legendary Herbie Flowers and is actually made up of TWO bass lines - the lower on double bass, the upper on electric bass.
Playing this song can be frustrating for a bass player because we have to make some concessions if we're to play it in it's complete form. So I'm presenting three different methods that all provide different approaches and techniques including chords and tapping! Enjoy

Nicely done.. Interestingly: "In an interview on BBC Radio 4 (Playing Second Fiddle, aired July 2005), Herbie Flowers (the bass player on 'Walk on the Wild Side') said the reason he came up with the twin bass lines on Walk on the Wild Side was that as a session musician, he would be paid double for playing two instruments on the same track.."😉😜🥰

I once met Herbie Flowers and I asked him about, take a walk on the wild side, he told me he was a bit skint at the time and if you manage to play two lines on the session he would get paid twice so he talked the producer into trying two lines

This lesson could also be seen as an introduction to tapping, which was exactly something I was looking for. So thanks a lot Mark. You made my day!

Don't know what I appreciate more here: the genius simplicity of the instruction or that damn sexy Marcus Miller bass.

Reaaaaaly good lesson. Tapping didn't exist when I started in 70s. I see how this could also work for other songs where there's bass and synth bass

What reverb pedal are you using or is just the studio you are in? Noticed it in the upper line . Subtle and good

I actually think the second example, with the ascending 'f' in the bass is a better compromise if playing this live - the tapping just adds too much attack and fret noise to the notes so it doesnt sound 'right'. Got to consider the actual tone of the instrument when playing classic lines, just as much as the notes themselves. Both good examples though

HI Mark, I am a subscriber and member of the site. I love the lessons and am really wanting to get to the next level. I have a Jazz Bass and notice that you have one more tone knob on yours. I have an Orange amp and change my strings every couple of months, I am unable to duplicate the amazing tone you get from your JB. I am also really into the incredible sound you are getting from your other basses. I would love some instruction on developing great bass tone on the Jazz Bass in the slapping lessons. Would you please consider a video on how best to set up the guitar and also getting that incredible tone from the instrument? Keep up the great work. You really are a very gifted teacher as well as a brilliant musician. Very best regards.

You don’t have to tap or slap. Just simply pluck the two strings with your thumb 👍 and finger similar to classical guitar style. That idiot slapping will destroy the deep smooth 70’s tone with that shitty thin trebled out 90’s piano wire tone.
