I love the Moment of Clarity, how if you think about it, it’s the horrific truth of the narrator’s goals. A world without change, a repeating agony that never ends. It was so much for the one echo that he gave up, utterly broken that his grand ambition is nothing but misery.
@@cakeisthebestintheworldand it was the narrator that created the construct. What do you think that means should his plan succeeds? He himself described it as a world of forgetting and rediscovering, how different is that to the construct, to the endless loop? The nightmare shows the cracks in this world, one where there is no release, no change, just a life doomed to repeat ad infinitum. Change means letting go of the notion of a cycle, letting the worms have their meal, nourishing the earth with your body, letting the stardust that formed you scatter once more in an ecosystem that will also one day be devoured in starlight. The narrator’s goal matches the description of the nightmare for me, just how horrible of a world he’d create, and hence why the echo in that path couldn’t bear it.
Oh wow, I've seen that scene several times and was so confused---I had no idea that's what it all meant. This gives me so much more perspective on the Narrator and on one of the endings, thank you! Now I have even more of a reason to obsess over this game even harder for even longer lmfao
I kinda prefer the old title "The hardest Choice You'll Ever Make." because it humorously contrasts with the intro, but I understand the benefits with the new one
“i just want to make you happy” when she slowly started getting simpler and simpler until she was taken, that was kinda saying that she’s only a reflection of what you want, of the choices you make, she will never be her own person. oof
I love this game because it is somehow so many things yet nothing is like it. It’s a psychological horror, it’s a dating simulator, it’s a story about coming to terms with the unyielding force of change. The fact that a story that is shown through a medium that is almost a slideshow can hold such depth and meaning is incredible to me. Nothing else can compare to this game also pretty women 🥺
From an interview with the writer of the game (Tony Howard-Arias), he said one if the inspirations for the game was eastern religion. He also studied philosophy. I can see why one of the analysts say that this game has quite the Daoist tone. As Narrator says, The Creator made sure the tear between the cycle of life and death was rough, so that a piece of the Long Quiet was in the Shifting Mound, while she has a piece of him. Getting rid of one or the other also gets rid of a piece of them. LQ is a dark avian creature. SM is a princess of light whose forms include feline ones. While the Princess is the one chained up in the cabin, she's the active force that pushes LQ to free her and himself (as he's also stuck in the Construct) while he reacts on the choices he has. Certain scenes have them switch like during the Stranger route where it was Princess who was in shadow and eyes glowing this time. While her shifts are extreme, Long Quiet was more constant with his form, save for growing, withering, and untethering. They're Yin and Yang. It's never explained why the Long Quiet is named that (as the developers decided on the Lynchian approach of not explaining the story), but it certaintly feels like the "long quiet" in-between the chapters- the pause between different states. He is life, stability, stasis and stagnancy. She is death, chaos, change, and potential. But, they also alternate and have pieces of each other- they are not absolutes. Aside from Daoism, I also saw some inspiration from creation stories in general, like the biblical story of Genesis and Adam, Eve, and the serpent in the garden of Eden. To gain freedom and self-actualization, Shifty pursues enlightenment and wishes to share it with the Long Quiet, who in turn can also decide to also rebel against the similarly avian Creator. It ends with the LQ, or LQ and Shifty to deal with the rest of creation.
I love how the Voice of the Smitten sounds and talks like a less NSFW version of Lazlo from “What we do in the shadows”, he even has the same cadence in his voice!
"my job is to describe facts as facts" is a really interesting and deceitful line, facts are not the same as truth, and can can be fallible/subject to amendments after gaining new information, yet the narrator is saying his job is to describe the 'facts' available to him as infallible facts which are true 2:31:15
The game has multiple endings depending on the player’s choices. These endings include the Long Quiet accepting the end of the universe and watching the birth of a new one alongside the Shifting Mound, killing the Princess permanently to preserve the current universe, the Hero and the Princess agreeing to forget everything and reset the construct to remain in the loop indefinitely, or the two mutually rejecting godhood and leaving the cabin to face an uncertain future together as lovers.
I have a thought about the end lines, she says "we could just do this forever" but the whole point of the character is that he has free will and is the only one there who does, therefore every time he went back to the start, odds are that he would do something different. That's the creators way of implementing the fact that the player technically controls the game, because the game reacts off of the players choices, because the player (debatable) has free will. Cool.

This is such a good game man. It perfectly captures the horror of godhood without glorifying it. It perfectly portrays the dyadic interplay of forces present in so many origin myths. It actually has the correct stance on death and mortality, even if the player chooses something else. And it doesn't handhold you about consequences.
@@curvingfyre6810”death is a natural part of life” is a very human perspective form of categorisation. Death as we categorise it based on our experiences comes at the end of life, but many living things self replicate, creating exact copies of themself, some simply change, some come back to life again like caterpillars do during metamorphosis. Our very limited notion of “death” is applied broadly to such a wide range of phenomena that it seems silly to use just the one word, and to use it with such totality

Moment of Clarity is interesting but The Tower and Damsel are in basically every playthrough I've seen, and The Witch and Stranger are common enough. Still a great playthrough, but the route's aren't all that special
Voice of the Smitten more like Voice of the Live Chat
Voice of the broken? More like voice of the twitch chat.

This is such a good game man. It perfectly captures the horror of godhood without glorifying it. It perfectly portrays the dyadic interplay of forces present in so many origin myths. It actually has the correct stance on death and mortality, even if the player chooses something else. And it doesn't handhold you about consequences.
What do you mean by correct stance on death and mortality?
@@edvinkaziunas5847 That death is a natural part of life, just as any other change
All life dies eventually, even those that self replicate. It is a finality that is true for all life @@turntech4776
@@turntech4776 those creatures can still die. Nothing is immortal - and a clone isn't you unless it shares your memories. If a creature doesn't have memories, then arguably there ian't any 'you'

The princess is change, including death and since the narrator wants to stop change, you keep going in circles, repeating the same thing. And once you accept the change, you can die in game and be free from playing again. Or something. Im sure someone phrased the meaning more eloquently somewhere!

So chaotic, and yet it all makes sense.
Excellent video.
Great Game.
I was enraptured for 3 hours, 4 minutes and 12 seconds straight.
The voice of the narrator is Johnathan Sims who also made and is the primary actor in The Magnus Archives
Chat going crazy when she stepped on the Hero is wild.

I went through quite an emotional journey on my first playthrough. Ended up tearing up in the end. I was disgusted, and then angry, and then spiteful, and then regret and frustrated and became penitent and tried to make things right. Something along those lines. I stopped playing then. I didn't 100% it, but I like it better this way. Remembering it as this emotional journey.
Charlie is such a slimy boy, he spends 3 hours making a single choice
Charlie constantly looks like he's in a limbo between getting out of the shower and waking up in the morning.
There ain’t no way he’s gonna play a game like this ever again
Thanks for 1k likes!! But there ain’t no way we’ll reach 2k
Yeah, it's honestly cool to see him play a game like this
He should play the house in fata morgana. I would love to see it

I want to see any big creator play Disco Elysium
I don't know why but the way he says "nuh-uh" at 4:18 just sends me

I'm both terrified and desperately excited for what brushing up again the content of Jonny 'lets make every normal thing so existentially horrible for fun' Sims will do to Slmccls future ideas and rps :)
The way Voice of the Hero just falls apart during The Moment of Clarity breaks my heart. The rest of the Voices at least all have their gimmicks, a distinct personality, some semblance of their original tone. The Voice of the Hero isn't… heroic anymore. He's just tired. He sounds like The Voice of the Broken, honestly. _"What I would give to be able to forget."_ _"Or you could just give up."_ What did he go through? What did he see?
I hope this encourages Charlie to listen to the Magnus Archives. Love Jon’s voice.
Charlie Slimesicle,
thank you.
What a trip. What a ridiculously good game.
All my 18 hats go off to the developers. For the art, the writing, the concept, the direction, the insanely well-drawn hands. But my hat's also off to you, Charlie.
Thank you, so incredibly much, for introducing me to this. For taking me on this journey.
You've succesfully made me obsessed with this game,
and I couldn't thank you more.
I will pay my respects to the developers, too lol
-THE VOICE ACTORS TOO, dear lord how could i forget!
i just realised whats happening and why the narrator is so insistant on the princess being bad, its because they ARE atleast in the narrators eyes so they ARE in the realworld as long as the princess knows of the narrator
or maybe the narrator is the same as the princess who changes based on others opinions of them

@@TheYeetedMeatVoice of the Lazy: But do we REALLY have to be the ones to do it? Why can’t we just stay home, and relax while someone gets it done.

I really love the details and symbolism this game has even way before you find out what teh "princess" is. Like at the second death the voice of the broken says how he doesn't feel liberated by her demise he feels empty. Without death life kinda looses all its meaning, the fact that it ends - despite causing suffering and seeming curel - is also why its so amazing to live and experience things.
