  • Many of us had climbed a hill through deep snow, to see the wolves that had a carcass in the area. Soon, the helicopter swooped in, scaring the wolves in every direction and capturing a few of them. Wolves associate helicopters with danger because they are captured, sedated, taken away from the pack for processing, and begin waking up to people taking pictures of them, before they recover enough to make their way back to the pack.
On this day, the wolves were taken behind some trees, out of our sight, for processing, so several of us climbed the hill, through the deep snow, to see the action. One small black wolf was already up and leaving but the very large grey wolf was out cold. They brought in another black wolf and processed it and it began waking up while the grey didn't move. Irrationally, I began to worry that the wolf didn't survive but introspect realized that it was so large that they no doubt gave it extra sedation. I've seen this before.
Once processed, some of the wolf project crew, who had skied and hiked out from where we had been watching, made it to the sleeping wolves. Pictures were taken and the grey still had not moved when someone was posing with its head, complete with tongue sticking out. Shortly after the photo session, the grey began to move and in other video can be seen holding its head up and watching the people that surrounded it. The black was much more awake and moving around.
I kept the commentary, captured while taking the video. We were intensely interested in the process and folks were craving more wolves, preferably awake, to watch.
