Profound song, catches one deep in the soul. Another masterpiece by John. I'd love to see what's going on in Lyle's mind as he listens to this masterpiece. Perhaps the same thing as a lot of us, being touched deeply.
absolutely! that is another beautiful thing about Lyle Lovett, is he feels deeply ! oh and he is as much in Love with John Hiatt as we are! incredible synergy between those two!
One of the best songs he's ever done, and much better than the album version. Such a wonderful voice, great lyrics, and lovely guitar playing. And I love Lyle's little admiring smile.
oh how great this is the John Hiatt with a new song, how this is great oh man!!!!Oh, a new album and so! Fully great, the John Hiatt!!!!! FULLY great!!!!!
Love his playing and songwriting, been listening to him since he first broke out in the vibrant music club scene in early-1980s Los Angeles as an 'angry young man' (anyone remember 'Cop Party'?), later 'escaping' California for Nashville. One thing I notice here is he plays the rhythem melody on the lower strings and complements it with notes on the higher strings, which is the opposite of most guitar playing.
" Eatin doughnuts and readin Twain ". Mr Hiatt has a way with lyrics that is magical. As Bonnie Raitt says John Hiatt is the only person who could rhyme amoeba with Queen of Sheba .
@@petemaloney9783 the whole song is about the period after her death and his move from California to Nashville as a result of needing a fresh start. that line the most obvious reference though
I saw John Hiatt 5-6 times but the first two times I saw him at IUP with Tom McIntosh in the student lounge which wasn't very big for $12. We knew he was going to be special.
Way back when I saw that Bonnie Raitt covered his music I had to check him out.he's one of the all time greats...funny thought provoking and just plain awesome! Where can I buy a Solar Sex Panel?
“Two cigarettes from the package gone, you must of thought about it just that long”. Gets me every time.
Just found this song today and it’s on repeat. That line, in particular, is a gut punch.
I think this was about his wife. So sad.
this song should be regarded as one of his best of all time...
and that is REALLY saying something!
I dunno. I’d have to think about it. He has written so many good ones.

Maybe "I'm not worthy!"

I love all the videos of John with Lyle co-starring. He always looks so deep in thought or reflection. It looks like respectful admiration.
A soul full of poetry...his songs touch me deeply.
I discovered this man music a few months ago. Man, have I been missing out. He is so damn good.
I know exactly what you mean! Been listening Mr. Hiat the whole Autumn, never heard of him before :D
@@mattikymenvaara4917 It must be something that happens to all of us when we discover him!
But isn't it great to find a treasure like this and realizing you could've entered eternity without knowing and now you're aware?
I've been playing for 35 years and everything you need to know can be found listening to his songs..sparseness, lyrics, dynamics, killer slide ...
Just one of the best songwriters to ever walk the planet. A national treasure. This is a perfect tune.

master songwriter....set my brain on fire...
Thank you for every note, every lyric.
This song touches me as much as Neil Young's "Oh my, Rock'n Roll will never die!".
Thank you for this treat!

I’ve read that the “two cigarettes gone” line is a reference to his wife’s suicide; if true, that’s a nice little nod to her

Wow great song!
@MrBluetrail thanks for the recomendations
I love you, Lyle.
@paddyyerdad completely agree. It's a tragedy that music of such quality gets such a small audience while x-factor gets millions...

Why mention Lyles name if he doesn't sing?
Awesome
Anybody know what guitar John is playing?
Superbe.
Anybody know what kind of guitar John is playing here. Sounds great.
Taylor
does any one have the cords
"That's it for me"
I totally like John Hiatt
@ mechfeeney: John was doing this while Springsteen and Tom were playing rock 'n roll and Jakob Dylan wasn't even a thought in his Dad's mind.
bigpalley : John is playing a Rigaud guitar on this track but has many Gibsons that he plays and Fender Telecaster.
Thanks Art! Just saw this. I'm used to John's J200s and J45s and was just curious.
Poignant
I am not a big Hiatt fan, but this is a Great Song.!!!
I love the part of Lyle Lovett...XDDDDDDDDDDD
@MCotugno f@*kin rights!!
someone done stole my seersucker suit...
great song, but this should be titled "John Hiatt - Adios to California (with Lyle Lovett, napping)"
Henry Colen, in this format john would play a song then Lyle would play one while John napped as you say.
thats a beautiful fucking song and i got nothing to do with americana i live in india ffs
Lyle looks too busy! That's the time to take a short break!
